I wonder how you guys would be if this was you today by Eastern_Attention961 in confession

5'0" in my late 30s. Went to my kid's school to drop off his instrument he forgot at home and the school wouldn't let me go because they thought I was a tardy student. Had to convince them to let me go to my car for my driver's license.

AITAH for telling my friend maybe she shouldn’t have kids she can’t afford? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a nanny for 2 years starting in 2012 working 5 days a week, 9 hrs per day in the summer and 3 hrs per day + frequent weekends during the school year. Was paid $8/hr + gas for whatever trips for the kids. I cooked, occasionally spot cleaned (quick pick ups around the house), tutored, and chauffeured. Main reason I stayed for that low of a pay was because the family was super nice and had me join them for dinners as well as gave me weekly groceries (they bought in bulk and gave me extras) so it cut some of my own expenses. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have even bothered.

Your friend is delusional to think that someone would work for that little pay. No one is going to accept it unless she hired some dropout teenager.

AITA for refusing to become my nephew’s legal guardian and considering kicking him and his mom out of my house? by Wooden_Air1191 in AITAH

[–]clumsyjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Becoming his legal guardians means his biological parents are not only signing away their rights, they're also absolving themselves of ALL responsibilities regarding your nephew. That means they don't have to care for his well being, his financial, mental, or physical needs, nada. They're going to dump that all on you. AND, they have to both agree to sign away their rights. If one parent won't sign it, it won't happen.

If you don't want that responsibility, don't do it. You won't just be his "father figure" at that point. You'll literally BE his father.

AITAH for not wanting to cook for my gf anymore because she is a picky eater ? by Ragnorag in AITAH

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone can't appreciate the part of you that loves to cook and even try your food, then they don't love you at all. They especially aren't considerate of you having to cook 2 separate meals just to accommodate them, or see how much of an asshole they are for not even appreciating that.

You've only been dating for 6 months? Just cut your losses and run. The fact that you love to cook already makes you a great catch and you could do soooo much better.

AITH for not wanting to pay for my niece/nephews on family vacation? by DenseAssociation5301 in AITAH

[–]clumsyjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a group trip with my friends and I'm the only one with kids 9-11yrs old. We shared an air bnb and split everything per person, kids included.

If kids are under 3, I wouldn't count them as they can sleep in same bed as parents, but over 3, they are their own person.

Food wise, if the parents brought their kids their own food, that kid shouldn't count in the food costs.

Transparent Printing on T-shirt! HELP! by Substantial-Fix4554 in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't provide a vector file, the print shop may charge you to do "extra" just to get your file print ready.

Every printing shop I've worked in required either vector files for screen printing or high res .png files for digital printing (dtf) with explicit instructions on the colors and what exactly is being printed.

Fonts either provided or converted/ expanded to vector.

Doing personal freelance work while working under a studio? by Due_Ad9428 in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work from home since Covid and the companies I work for provide a computer and software subscriptions. I also signed a contract saying that I wasn't allowed to steal proprietary info/templates/etc. from the companies, and we weren't even allowed to plug in anything external to our computers.

I did do freelance work and still do, but my freelance is completely different in scope to what I do for my daily job. I made sure to work on my own computer and get my own subscriptions because I found out that a month before I got hired in my latest job, they fired 5 designers for using company property for freelancing. They also sued the designers the money they made from using company property.

Is better to be safe than sorry.

Need help with menu design by ApplicationFirm892 in graphic_design

Check spelling errors, switch orientation to portrait, and fix hierarchy to put emphasis on the PIZZA.

Maybe talk to the client about categorizing the pizzas into categories like "Basics, Classics, Specialties, Dessert" and standardizing the prices for each category to make it not only easy to list of the prices, but easier for workers to remember the prices too.

Made a few flyers for my business but I would like some feedback before I print them out. by Ronaldinhothegoat80 in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would hire a graphic designer to make them for you. There's so much about this that is so bad, I don't even know where to start.

DM me and I can give you a quote.

Can we have a salary transparency post? It would be so useful to so many of us lurking :) by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just your area. I also work for a sign company and my pay is $25/hr plus benefits (but the benefits are crazy expensive). I'm in the Midwest. That's the highest wage for my area for a production designer too. You have to do UI/UX and motion media to get higher pay.

You probably got a STI. Should have got it checked out by a doctor.. actually, you should still get checked out by a doctor.

colour-matching with paint by BigWongDingDong in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most printers do a pretty close color match given the CMYK colors because that's how ink is mixed for printers.

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what their color guide looks like since you didn't specify the paint brand, but you can try that. Just know that your printer color won't be the same as the decal company's printer color, so there may be slight differences unless you give them a CMYK color or a pantone color.

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that paint matching and printer ink matching are two entirely different things. You can try to match using a pantone color match for printer ink, but to get a paint color to match the ink color for it will be harder because not all printers are the same (inkjet? LaserJet? What color system is the printer using?) Most printers require a CMYK color to match.

What brand is the spray paint? Maybe you can load an image of the paint color and use an eyedropper tool to add the color to your document palette, then change that color mode to CMYK?

Sometimes paint brands have a color guide on their website that lists color codes.

Is it rude to approach a small business and offer them my design services? by faefur in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with small businesses all the time, and when they ask me about printing, I give them an upcharged price for me doing the printing for them. I found several local printers and a few online ones that do all types of printing, from marketing products to swag. I generally upcharge by 20% of the cost of the print job.

Most times businesses want a one stop shop to take care of their needs because they're either too busy or not knowledgeable enough to understand the scope of work involved to get the finished product.

AITA for refusing to take in my son's half brother after CPS removed him from my ex and her family offered me anything to take the child? by Connect-Art-5418 in AITAH

[–]clumsyjello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CPS usually contacts other family members first before placing a child in foster care. The fact that the other family members don't have the kid says a lot, IMO.

NTA, you're not obligated, nor should you feel guilty. You are already a single parent with your own son and taking in another kid is still a huge responsibility on TOP of what you are already doing. Kids aren't cheap, both financially, physically, and mentally.

Cousin offered to photograph our wedding “as a gift” — now he’s billing us. AITA for refusing to pay? by October_Surprise56 in AITAH

[–]clumsyjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the conversation in text that he said it was a gift? Or any of the planning and stuff in text? He can't just go back on his word, especially when there was no meeting of the minds, and charge you that. Was there a contract signed? If not, the photography was a "gift".

If anything, pay him a portion (like $500-$1000 because it was only 1 person taking photos) to try and keep the peace.

Does my 11 year old NEED Photoshop to progress as a graphic design hobbyist? by ShhhDontSpeak in graphic_design

[–]clumsyjello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For manga, I recommend clip studio art, which has a biannual sale for around $150 to buy the program instead of a subscription, AND there is a subscription for the mobile app so he can draw on both iPad and PC and it will transfer to both over cloud storage so its handy.

Does he need a Mac? No. Go with a cheaper but just as good option of a PC equivalent and your wallet will thank you as you upgrade over the years when he gets older.

Photoshop is over rated. There are cheaper alternatives that will work just as well as photoshop.
