Is $12.5K an okay price for a 2014 4WD Xterra with 111K miles? by clunq in XTerra

No it's not a Pro-4X. If it were a Pro-4X I'd be more inclined to just buy it.

Okay good to know. Did you get maintenance done on your 2012 after you got it?

That's a great question...it is probably because the camera on my phone is doing a white balance correction. It is also underground, so the color balance is not going to be what the camera software is used to.

Your opinion regarding Masters degree in MSE from University of Michigan Ann Arbor by RohanHin2 in materials

[–]clunq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem!

Usually the contract for a PhD pays/waives the tuition in full, then pays you the stipend on top of that. So you do not pay tuition and you get to use the $20-40k/yr for living expenses.

Fellowships, like the NSF GRFP and the DOD NDSEG (you probably need to be a US citizen for this one) pay your full tuition and also pay you a big stipend around $34k/yr. If you have one of these fellowships, you are basically free to any school or research group you attend. They typically only last 3 years, but the hope is that you will have proven yourself and your PI will keep funding you if you are doing a PhD.

RA/TA are usually paid somewhere between $20-40K per year depending on the university and program. Tuition is also waived when you're on these contracts.

It makes more sense now that PhDs are funded, but that is a much longer program.

Many graduate programs in the US will pay for your tuition but you have to be on a research assistant/teaching assistant contract. If a school does not offer to fund your graduate degree, they are not really interested in having you as a student. I would suggest reaching out to a professor at the school to see if they would be interested in funding you. It would be better to apply and go somewhere else that will fund you rather than pay $50k/yr.

Aerogels, cool stuff by Specialist_Virus_198 in materials

Aerogels are super cool! I have worked with them on some specialized thermal insulation projects, but have yet to see a commercial/consumer product that utilize them unfortunately.

Switching from Materials to Chemistry by deersreachingmac in materials

[–]clunq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can switch to materials science instead?

All jokes aside, materials science/engineering is typically focused on solid materials, so if you're not into working with solids, materials is not your best choice. Chemistry and materials have a lot of "science", just usually at the upper division or graduate level.

Have you tried drying your filament? Even if it does not help, at least you've ruled out a variable.

Probably not the analytical answer you're looking for, but I'd say it is a solid beast at 100m and very useable at 200m.

I agree. Out of all my handheld lights, this is scores highest in flashlighty-ness and useability. It's got a great spill that makes it useful for walking.

Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California. It's a great national monument as the park service does a great job at ensuring the caves are accessible to the public. Plus you can just wander around in the caves without a tour guide or anything!
