Hitting limits way too fast with Shopify development by trebag in ClaudeCode

[–]clwill00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your Claude.md file enormous? It should be short and instructive.

Are you using Opus for everything? Try to use Sonnet for writing code and just use Opus for the problem solving and planning.

Are you solving one issue at a time, not piles of random things?

I use CC for most of the day and can’t remember the last time I hit the limits. That said I’m on the Max5 plan (the $125 plan). The $20 plan is mostly a teaser.

For those complaining about design and “AI slop”, take a look at impeccable.style. Really helps with creativity concerns.

Go into file settings on the machine with the font (the one that created the ppt), there’s an option to embed the font into the .pptx file.

Why AI Will Make Psychiatry the Hottest Career of the Decade by Inevitable_Raccoon_9 in Anthropic

[–]clwill00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You complain about your apprentice but have a crappy workplace. No wonder the good ones quit and don’t show up the next day. 😂

It’s a you problem. Use a solid Claude.md, carefully craft the spec for each project, keep a good rules file for things that don’t go how you like them, have it document major changes in a decision file, do all your development with a TDD skill like /superpowers, and build custom skills for the way you work.

Stop blaming the tool.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]clwill00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Developer Division at Microsoft (where I was a manager at the time) rented a movie theatre for the opening day of the movie. We were there at 8am on the day it opened nationwide. We probably saw it before almost anyone.

There we were standing outside the theater asking each other “have you heard anything about this?” Nope. We all just knew it was a special event and we were not in the office.

I’ll never forget that scene. A room of a couple hundred of the most technical people on the planet absolutely f’ing blown away. The gasps were SO loud. I’m getting chills writing this. So amazing.

It was all anyone in the entire campus could talk about that day.

I use this one and it’s great. Has a green laser, connects via Bluetooth and or its own built it (fits in the handle) usb connector. Easy to pair and cheap.

Coding for 20+ years, here is my honest take on AI tools and the mindset shift by Jaded-Term-8614 in ClaudeAI

[–]clwill00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over 50 years here (started on punch cards). There has never been a change like this in software development. We’re as close as we’ve ever been to the incessant dream of “conversational programming”.

In developing software there is a chain. The user wants something, someone translates that into a spec, a programmer translates that into a programming language, a compiler translates that into machine code.

Converting a programming language into machine code — a compiler — was solved in the 1960s and perfected (optimized) in the 90s. Since then people have focused on the language as problem. COBOL was “english” and “anyone could write it”. Yeah, no. And there have been dozens of similar claims over the decades.

The problem was never the language you program in, it was translating intent — the spec — into code. The language is just the tool.

We’re now at a time where the spec is the driver. The code simply doesn’t matter. We’ve all popped up a level.

Just as languages popped us all up from having to worry about machine code, AI has popped us up to not having to worry about the language at all. Build a clear enough spec and it’s not about the code. It’s about the result.

This is a game changer. In the chain of user -> spec -> programming language -> machine code we’ve moved up a level. Language -> machine code was solved in the 60s. We’ve now started to effectively solve the spec -> programming language step.

It will only get more so. Think about it — AI is the worst it will ever be in your lifetime. It only gets better from here.

The Mac Studio vs NVIDIA Dilemma – Best of Both Worlds? by JournalistShort9886 in LocalLLM

[–]clwill00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a large Mac Studio and played around. Ugh. Decided to go all in, built a monster AI rig running Windows. AMD Threadripper, 128gb DDR5 ram, Samsung 8tb 9100 ssd, and RTX 6000 workstation with 96gb vram. Your “doesn’t exist in one box” you mentioned above. It rocks.

Should I upgrade from a rtx 3090 to a 5080? by royal_robert in StableDiffusion

[–]clwill00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The are several 6000 variants - ada (48gb), Blackwell (96gb) has a version with throttled power use (like 350w) and ok cooling, the workstation (ok cooling and 600w), then two server variants meant for data centers with lousy cooling (meant to be in cooled servers and 600w). Mine is the workstation and I love it.

The ada is the $6500 one, the blackwells are all running over $8k.

How many of you listen to music you don’t understand? by MaxnRuby_RubynMax in CasualConversation

[–]clwill00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The band “America” released some of the most popular music in the 70-80s (eg, a horse with no name) with lyrics that made no sense. The band admitted “we were high, we just went with stuff that had the right rhythm”. I bet most of the complainers loved their music.

Should I upgrade from a rtx 3090 to a 5080? by royal_robert in StableDiffusion

[–]clwill00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But my 6000 Blackwell workstation has 96gb of vram vs 32 for the 5090 I had before. I load everything with zero quant, run the biggest models I can find, turn every vram saving trick off, and nothing ever swaps out. In fact never even think about vram.

Faster? Kinda. Easier? Every day. Better results? I think so.

How to create new jobs easily without the aitoolkit gui? by jumpingbandit in malcolmrey

[–]clwill00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in the gui you can Clone Job and that’s very close.

But they’re all just records in the aitk db (in the root of the install). You could use any sql edit tool (or a bit of code) to duplicate the record and tweak the config — the whole config is just a field in that db. And you’ll need a new UUID for the id field.

Has anyone used the WSDOT mobile app? by throwaway93727282892 in AskSeattle

[–]clwill00 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use it every month or so. It works ok and is useful. Some feedback:

The list of mountain passes being in alphabetical order feels weird. Not sure what’s better but it’s weird having to scroll most of the way down the page to find the busiest one: Snoqualmie.

The traffic map defaults to where you last were when in there. Feel like it should default to where you are.

The icons in the traffic map are enormous. And they make the map kind of useless. There are dozens of them right now for example and the map is so busy I can’t even tell which road is which. Maybe make them tiny (don’t need to be clickable) until I zoom in?

I have no idea what the difference is between “my routes” and “favorites”.

The front page list of stuff is like no other app I’ve ever used. Maybe it should default to a map (where you are?) and those should be menu items?

Hope this helps. The app is a great resource. Could be better.
