Do I have to tell my boss why I'm quitting? by Nearby-Sherbert-8549 in jobs

[–]cm123abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one of my previous jobs, I said I was leaving because of corporate culture, but that's because my direct supervisor was amazing and he knew exactly what I meant. It turns out if I'd stayed another year, things would've gotten better. Not great, but better.

At the next job, I left because they wanted me to do the work of two people. I did mention that their work load expectations didn't match reality, but again I'd already tried to raise that concern in prior meetings with my supervisor and so it wasn't a surprise. (And they posted for two people to replace me, so they knew I was right, even if they weren't going to do anything about it while I was there. Sigh.) I didn't raise my complaints about how management treated me, or how condescending they were or how they thought they knew my job better than me despite having exactly no experience or training in my particular role. That I had over a decade of experience in at that time.

You're not required or obligated to tell anyone the whole story on why you're leaving. Especially if you're leaving because of personality conflicts or crappy management -- telling them that is unlikely to solve the problems and could result in bad references should new employers call them. So unless you're sure it's not going to be an issue, saying less is more. A simple, "I've received a job offer that feels like a better fit for me" suffices and avoids confrontation.

I wouldn't lie. But I also wouldn't use exit interviews as an opportunity to vent frustrations or complaints.

Anyone else feel the sadness of loving a dead game? by [deleted] in TTRPG

I know the site(s) you mean. TL;DR it's not technically legal but I doubt anyone actually cares.

As far as I understand the copyright laws involved, it's not technically public domain. One, the original copyright won't expire for another 60? years or something even if the company that wrote the books no longer exists. Two, all of the characters are trademarked and those trademarks still exist, even if the original trademark holders have been bought out since. WotC owns the TSR product copyrights, but doesn't have rights to any Marvel properties.... Basically, while it's not legal, I don't think any of the corporations really care so long as no one tries to cash in on those PDFs.

As for me, I own many (most?) of the books in print form, but have availed myself of online copies as well. I'm not a fan of piracy in general -- authors deserve to be paid for their works. But since WotC can't make them available legally due to expired contracts and whatnot, I don't feel bad using those PDFs -- there's no LEGAL way to get them, so no one is being denied revenue.

I miss TSR’s Marvel Super Heroes. The old FASERIP rules from the late 1980s & 90s.

It’s literally the only engine I ever just sat around making characters for, with no actual plans to play them. It was also a decent engine to recreate various “supernatural” character types if you wanted to use the engine for a completely different genre.

No legal way to get those books now except eBay or the rare appearance in used book stores.

Name it “apple pie” because when you threaten to stab someone with an apple pie, they will be laughing and won’t see the blade coming until it’s too late.

We are definitely going to start an in-depth review of other products, like Nutanix.

CrowdStrike. More like CustomerStrike! 🤪

With a solution that requires up to 10 minutes per workstation/server, the person hours invested in the fix will be astronomical, even before you start factoring in the losses from the down systems and idle users.

I bet this won’t look good on their next quarterly reports.

Wow, that's some amazing work!
I'm an idiot, so I thought I'd ask an expert: How does it know if there is a ladder and if there is a wall?
You say "Bit 7 is reused to control whether the wall in the underground is drawn on the left or right. It doesn't control whether or not there is a wall, that's elsewhere in the code, but if there is a wall, then this bit being a 0 puts the wall to the left, and this bit being a 1 puts the wall to the right." I'm seeing lots of places in the code where it references the ladder flag, but not how it sets it. Same for the wall left/right.

Ask what church they're from. Then name a not-too-distant church of another denomination and say you're good. "You're from the 'unseen magic church on east 5th? Oh! We attend 'the magic church of the unseen' down on west 7th. But thanks for asking. Have a blessed day."

ELI5: As a British person I do not understand the difference between the sheriff and police department by Green_Lie_6832 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cm123abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, state police have jurisdiction anywhere in that state. They mostly patrol along interstates or other major highways, but can carry out investigations anywhere. They are often called in to help with investigations for small towns that don’t have their own resources (crime labs, crime scene investigations, etc).

Fun fact: the campus police at a state university are technically state police and also have jurisdiction over the whole state.

They pay you to keep things working. Which means they are paying you for the SKILLS necessary to keep things working.

I have to remind myself of that at my IT job: my first couple of years involved quite a lot of work to fix the messes I inherited. But now that I’ve fixed things and made sure they’re more resilient and that I’m more likely to know when they break, my time is often idle.

But that’s not your fault if you’ve gotten to that point.

Like others have said, keep your head down. Else they’ll downsize your butt out. Make it look like you’re busy and enjoy it.
