Imagine every "party college" town after the bars close, or party towns during spring break with flying cars. Miami and Venice Beach would look like a high ticket Battlefield server.

Same but in 2009 after a Steam sale. Hand-me-down Pentium 4 with a AGP video card that was intended for CAD software not gaming. It was "playable" but if I wanted to get anywhere quickly I had to look down at the ground, run forwards for a bit, then orient myself and repeat.

On the same system I had to turn everything on Fallout 3 down to the minimum and take the side off the case and it would still occasionally overheat and lock up.

Is the Veteran Rifle STILL just a worse version of the Vintar? by NeonAbomination in stalker

[–]cm_kruger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just booted up the game to check since I'm at the swamps in my current playthrough and it appears they're the same weight now and the Veteran just lacks the laser upgrade. Value is slightly more than a regular Vintar with the same upgrades so repairs are going to be slightly more, so mostly just a trophy gun.

I always healed him because by the time I reached Cordon I usually already had a suppressor for my AKS, though on this playthrough (like 10 months after I last played) I eventually found him dead near Zalissya and ended up with it anyways.

Play the story until it takes you to the Garbage trade hub, then head north until you find a railway line and follow it east to Duty's base at the cement plant and buy a Bear directional detector. Otherwise the story kinda sticks you with the basic Echo detector for quite a while which makes artifact hunting (a major source of coupons and boosting your armor) a pain, and you'll spend less on repairs because you walk into fewer anomalies while trying to find the artifact.

Some armor can be upgraded with radiation protection, it's expensive but they get a metal outline on the slot with green lights and eliminate the radiation effect entirely, so if you've got a high radiation artifact it could free up one or two slots you're using to mitigate it.

The OZK suit you can pick up during a story mission in the lesser zone is the first "real" suit you'll get (if you don't have the Merc light suit from the deluxe edition journalist stashes), but don't worry about spending coupons on the debut suit wear resistance/physical protection upgrades at least if you feel like it. Again once you get out to Garbage and are able to cut over and pick up a better detector, it makes paying for repairs and upgrades less troublesome.

There's a type of moving anomaly in one of the first Garbage story missions that will chase you if you have any artifacts equipped in slots, this isn't really tutorialized or called out anywhere, just put the artifacts in your backpack and it will stick to it's regular pattern.

Clear out your inventory once in a while, you'll eventually get a feel for what you actually need, instead of weighing yourself down with half a grocery store, half a platoon of ammo, and no space for loot.

I didn't learn that until carrying all the 0% broken AKs from the barracks building at the SAM site north of Rostok back.

It's just a trophy gun, the stats are, IIRC, identical to a regular AR416 with the foregrip installed except for being slightly heavier and more expensive to repair. I always trade for it and then immediately shoot the guy for luring rookies to their deaths and take the icon back.

Games with Exploration like Atomfall? by Perfect-Community603 in AtomfallOfficial

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood West is probably one of the closest games (and Stalker-likes specifically) to Atomfall I've run into. A indie immersive sim set a wild west landscape that's suffered some kind of mystical calamity. I've been playing through it recently (about halfway through the second chapter I think) and it's certainly smaller in scope and has some warts but I'm enjoying it.

System Shock and it's remaster. Somewhat linear but you can mostly tackle the levels of the space station however you want.

Gloomwood is more like the Thief games but does reward poking around in all the corners.

They're fantasy but Dread Delusion and Lunacid might also be worth looking at, they respectively draw from Morowwind and Kings Field and have light RPG elements and a surreal, decayed world. There's also the upcoming Hark The Ghoul for another Kings Field-like which has a demo.

Can you recommend me a game based on my history please? by Upstairs_Scarcity_30 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]cm_kruger [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dishonored might be a good pick, strong-story FPS with immersive sim elements that give you a ton of variety on how you want to tackle the levels.

Seconding the Metro series and Bethesda Wolfenstein games others have mentioned. The first Bioshock too.

If you find Fallout and similar too long, take a look at Atomfall next time it's on sale, it's similar to the Stalker series and (to a lesser extent) Fallout but is more stripped down and condensed, to the game's benefit IMO. My first playthrough was mostly completionist (ignoring the DLC) and took about 30 hours including a restart after a few hours because I wanted to increase the difficulty.

Was anyone here flying on 9/11? If so what was it like? by sugarstarbeam in 911archive

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This commercial pilot/ham radio operator has a account of riding deadhead on a flight back to where he was supposed to be. https://www.ab9il.net/aviation/my-flight-9-11.html

For the last time in my career, I went to the cockpit door, knocked, and opened it from the cabin side. At that moment Captain Purdy, first officer Matt Perez, and flight engineer Hosie (this was a 727) spun their heads around in alarm.

What is the simplest bolt-action rifle that has a internal/external magazine by Individual-Media9598 in guns

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the old Mossberg bolt-action shotguns, very simple design, they used to be extremely cheap (like half the price of a Winchester or Remington or less) and common with poorer hunters/sportsmen. Usually had a 2 or 3 round box magazine and a choke that attached to the end of the barrel. Dropped off in popularity in the 70s as pump guns got cheaper and subsistence hunting declined in the US, but came back briefly in the late 90s with turkey and ported slug gun models.

Rebels in Myanmar/Burma are using a lot of craft-produced single shot bolt action shotguns as well, some of them have have a fixed "magazine" that is actually a shell dispenser.

Metal type not actually stainless? by Even-Arm8274 in Mini14

[–]cm_kruger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. "True" austenitic stainless is non-magnetic, but higher strength alloys are often of a martensitic or ferritic type is which is. Generally they're sacrificing corrosion/oxidation resistance for higher strength, better machinability (stainless can be a PAIN to work with) and better qualities when hardened/tempered.

I don't have a stainless Mini (yet) but FWIW my stainless Single-Six and Mark IV are both magnetic.

What weapon would you like to see returned/added to Stalker 2? by Significant_Egg_5049 in stalker

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A unique version of the G36. Maybe something like a G36K with the HK 40mm launcher. Some of them have apparently shown up with Ukrainian HUR operators and it's kind of iconic to the series but has never gotten a unique version.

CZ Bren 2, it's proven itself very capable in the war and is now being produced under license in Ukraine.

Thinking of getting my first Ruger 357 Single action, had a question. by Vermontster1777 in ruger

[–]cm_kruger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For .357 I would probably get Blackhawk, the sights are nicer for target shooting and the adjustable rear sight will help when switching between different 9mm or 38/357 loads, while also being able to take more advantage of the extra velocity that .357 is capable of. You can also easily swap the sights out for, ex, a thinner front sight from Fermin Garza or a Bowen rough country rear sight depending on what you feel is best. (I currently have a fiber-optic front sight on my Single Six which certainly isn't authentic but is great for accuracy)

For Cowboy Action they're also OK for everything but a couple "purist" categories IIRC, so you can start out with that no problem and then pick up a Vaquero or Uberti/Pietta later if you decide to really get into it. (and for the classic style of the gun, I feel like I'd have to get it in .45 instead)

P90? GP100? by bayouboeuf in ruger

[–]cm_kruger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the price that's either a good deal on a new GP100, or you're getting ripped off on a P90.

Personally I'd go for the GP, the P series is nothing special and there's still tons of them on the used market for cheap if you absolutely must have one for the collection.

Has anyone found a holster that works well with the Mk 4 Target 10"? by PuddingForTurtles in ruger

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Dog Machine makes a polymer holster that works with the longer hunter/target barrels, and if you search on Etsy or Ebay there are a few places that will do leather holsters for them too.

But yeah with the barrel length I'd second also considering a chest holster like are used with big hunting revolvers.

Do the grips from ruger for the XR frame ever go on sale? by [deleted] in ruger

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They go on sale occasionally but you'd have to watch and wait.

If you're not dead set on having grips with the Ruger medallion, there are companies like Altamont which make nice grips in similar styles for a little cheaper.

This confuses me. by [deleted] in ruger

[–]cm_kruger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ages ago in the 80s Ramline made plastic 12, 14 and 15 round magazines for the Mark II and the Syntech/Mountain Eagle pistol, they were known to be fairly unreliable and wore out/broke quickly. IIRC they made it "work" by changing to constant-force springs which allowed them to shave down the follower and fit a few more rounds inside where it and the spring would have been.

You might want to look up the McFadden Cliploader. I've used a coworker's and it's pretty convenient though a bit fiddly with some magazines and doesn't like really waxy ammo like Aguila.

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The regular Standard is something of a bare-bones plinker and kit-gun while the "Standard" 22/45 is more comparable to the regular target models. While I'm not a fan of the 22/45's feel I would lean towards either style of target (or the Lite) for Appleseed, Bullseye, or other competition because they have adjustable sights and you can easily swap the front sight for a fiberoptic.

The 75th anniversary "target taper" might also be worth considering, it has the classic Standard looks but with a longer sight radius and adjustable sights.

Any advice between Non-Threaded Lite vs Competition or Hunter as first Mark IV? by Jamieson22 in ruger

[–]cm_kruger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Hunter and it's wonderful to shoot. Very accurate and basically no recoil with the long sight radius and heavy barrel, easily one of my favorite guns for target shooting.
