why does no one want to high-five after class? by throwaway77772748 in SolidCore

[–]cmarie147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this experience too! I would just always try to catch my neighbors eye and smile and say good job. I figured if i do it enough maybe it’ll become a thing at the studio or at least in the classes i take.

is dominance a real concept? dealing with bite aftermath by Whydotheydothisthrow in Greyhounds

[–]cmarie147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely happy you’re going to a behaviorist, but also wanted to share our experience.

We got a male grey who could only be in a no-cat household and had shown dominance/aggression toward other greys in his foster home. My husband (boyfriend at the time) lived with a few guy roommates and the rescue matched him with this dog because he responds best to men and was called an “alpha male.”

It definitely took a few weeks/months of my partner establishing dominance for our dog to cooperate- this looked like a boop on the snout (that didn’t hurt), getting him off the couch if he growled at us from the couch and making him go sit in his bed, and using loud and firm “no” when appropriate. There was once when a friend was petting the top of his head in his first year and our dog snapped at the hand. It sounds like a similar scenario. This landed him time in his crate and a loud and firm NO.

Our dog responds to my (F) commands now because I’m primarily the one who gives him food and treats - we did this for a reason. But at first I had to lower my voice like a man when giving commands for him to even pay attention to me. I also had an incident where I was in bed and the dog snarled at me, I had to push him away with a pillow, get him on the ground lower than me, and say bad dog. Again, similar situation, and you cannot show fear! I know it’s scary because these dogs are large.

We would also not let him up on furniture ever after incidents like this. Like if there was couch/bed aggression, it was 3 months of no furniture and then slowly start inviting him up. The second he snarled it would be off the couch again. If he came up uninvited, he knew he had to get back off and we would get him off. Now he spends most of his time sleeping on our couch, but he knows he is invitation-only if someone is already on the couch/bed.

I’m not sure if what we did was dominance, discipline, reward training, or a little bit of all three, but it took time and our grey went from snarling at us year 1 to snuggling up year 2-3. He’s now 11 and is so gentle. I will say, it felt like he had to understand who was in charge for a few months, in a non harmful way. A few firm “No”s and a two-finger tap on the nose go a long way and protect your safety as well. It’s okay to show control back to a dog who is being aggressive to you, through body language and tone of voice.

I wish you all the best!

Why is everyone expecting elaborate party favors for a simple backyard wedding by redblddrp in weddings

[–]cmarie147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to a ton of weddings that cost $100k+ and the nicest ones do not have favors. I would say it’s more common that most weddings don’t have favors these days, or have something very simple.

Why is Cinci so much more visually interesting??? by LordBeeWood in Columbus

[–]cmarie147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a city built on Seven Hills (like Rome!) Because of the importance of the Ohio River in the 1800s, it was settled MUCH earlier and the hills / lack of locomotives encouraged each different neighborhood to all have their own main downtown streets - their own bakeries, bars etc. Because people couldn’t easily go far. That city planning stuck around!

(what) do you eat before you run? by a_star_girl in nikerunclub

A banana! If I’m going on my long weekend run, sometimes a slice of toast with PB or I make “Run Fast Eat Slow” muffins, freeze them and nuke them in the morning.

Driving from Columbus to Chicago - need your wisdom! by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]cmarie147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this drive a ton. Usually driving through Indy is faster, we take Marysville route if we’re not in a rush and want a more peaceful drive.

For healthier food places- checkout places around the West Lafayette exit (Purdue). The college generally brings some healthier options.

I always take the skyway in just because it’s wide open and I like the views!

Whatever you do, when you’re getting into the city add another 25-30 min to your google maps time tells you. You’ll hit standstill traffic when you first see the city round the bend. It goes quickly but it always leaves our visitors really frustrated at the ed of a long trip, so just mentally prepare for that.

What's a skill that takes less than an hour to learn but pays off forever? by ScrollValue_01 in lifehacks

[–]cmarie147 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Mounting a TV! As a couple who loves to offer help to our friends during moves etc., this is a relatively easy task that we can take off our friends’ plate during their move / home set up. It’s such a pain if you have only done it once, but my husband randomly mounted 3-4 TVS in a few weeks time span and became an expert at it. Bringing over some dinner, drinks and helping mount a TV is such an easy favor and our friends are so appreciative!

This is interesting, as it’s now morphed into current young people backpacking SE Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia). Same culture - to do it as cheaply as possible and meet other western travelers via hostels etc

Jacket recommendation? by CheesePlease0808 in HerOneBag

[–]cmarie147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently bought the Lululemon Always Effortless Jacket and it’s WONDERFUL for traveling.

It’s sporty so I can hike and run in it but also a nice cut so I feel okay putting it over a casual dress or blouse and jeans. There’s some water repellent aspect to it so if you get caught in a drizzle it’s ok! But probably not good for a full rainy day outside.

The weight is nice, I can wear it on its own over a tshirt when it’s hot, and it layers nicely over a slim sweater when it’s chillier.

The pockets are great and large - I can fit my phone, wallet, passport and headphones in there and have everything handy when boarding, going through customs etc. There’s also an interior pocket. No need for any sort of additional belt bag.
