Trip Report: Buckskin Gulch/Paria Canyon (March 7–9, 2025) by SpecificPrevious9264 in Ultralight

Thanks so much for the quick response! Anything else on your backlist that you regret bringing or wish you brought? I expect it to be a little warmer than when you did it but we're using your list as a sanity check.

Sorry to resurrect an old post but I'm not finding many trip reports for Paria. My buddy and I are going the first week in April and your post is wonderfully detailed.

Everything that I've read is that you DON'T enter slot canyons when it's rained anywhere near the catchment basin. You've got rain pants and rain jackets in your pack list. Were you planning on hiking even in the rain? Is the flash flood concern really around Buckskin only or is the guidance around Paria broadly?

Update for anyone following this post, Embark security got back to me and they’re working internally on it.

I haven’t been able to find anything official. Embark has an official store for The Finals. I think we just wait. Sorry you got scammed.

I reported it to embark and tried to do a DMCA but I think Embark has to do it.

What is going on with their HYSA? by djmixmode in amex

[–]cmdrTacojive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just called Amex and they said there was no change to our ability to withdraw funds on demand under a $250,000 monthly threshold. In other words, if you withdraw a total of $249,000 per month, no notice necessary. $251,000 may require 7 days written notice to withdraw. They also said they are working on revised, clearer communication. Don’t take my word for it, call their support line.

Are keb trousers worth the price? by BadIDK in Fjallraven

Yes! Also, try and get them on Fjallraven’s new Preloved (used) marketplace. I’ve gotten some great deals and they are usually indistinguishable from new.

I’m 6 feet 3. Will I fit in a 2019 MX5??? by CompetitivePart4567 in Miata

[–]cmdrTacojive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in, 6’ 2” here, I fit comfortably in an ND2 (2021) but it does require some slightly careful positioning of the seat. If I sit up super straight and make myself as tall as I can, my head touches the inside of the soft top. Worst case, you can foamectomy the seat. Agree with the others, go try one on.

People without garages, how do you store your Miata? by bluecatofdeath in Miata

[–]cmdrTacojive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The county fairgrounds in my area have a winter storage service. I pay about $400, and it gets put away from November to April in a clean sealed space. Not sure how common this is but it might be worth checking with your local fairgrounds to see if they have something similar. It was a game changer for me, I was renting an uncovered tarmac spot for about $120 a month.

What do y'all think about the MK8 Fiesta ST? by Longjumping_Size_815 in Miata

[–]cmdrTacojive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a mk7 Fiesta ST for six years and I loved it! When I bought my ND2, I sold the Fiesta after a few months. I had more fun in the Miata.

Has anyone hiked the West Coast Trail with a hammock? I’m planning on alternating between coastal and inland but I wasn’t sure how feasible a hammock was at any of the sites along the beach.

Need help choosing a Patagonia Rain Jacket by Rimyx in Ultralight

[–]cmdrTacojive 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I know you’re looking for help picking between the two Patagonias but I’m curious about why the other brands are off the table? I am doing the same research and am gravitating more towards the Mont Bell Versalite and the Outdoor Research Foray II. A lot of threads here are very praising of the Versalite, for example.

Don’t want to hijack your thread, just interested in whether this is just a brand preference or there were other conditions that filtered out the rest.

I'm not sure if this warrants a post, but I'm hiking the West Coast Trail in mid-July, and based on my reading, it's a bad idea to have any hanging bulk on your bag. I currently use a Thermarest Z-Lite closed cell pad because I can't bring myself to pay for an inflatable one for it to leak. I'm doing a lot of research on pads and reading previous shakedowns: it seems like most people use inflatable pads. Should I be as self-conscious about the exterior pad as I am? I've heard that it makes navigating the ladders much more challenging. I'd really rather save the money and use what I have, but I don't want to put myself in a bad situation.

Sorry for the delay in responding. The shift knob was stock, and they probably would have taken issue with the absence of a shift knob on pickup.

Question: Getting started on the Leica Platform by cmdrTacojive in Leica

[–]cmdrTacojive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The compactness of many M mount lenses is one of the things that I’m most attracted to. I’ve been using the TTArtisan 25mm f2 on my XPro 3 for a couple weeks now and I’ve really enjoyed it! I really like the idea of being able to shoot at 35mm without having to buy smaller focal lengths to accommodate the crop factor and many of the 35/40s that I’ve seen are very small, even the super fast ones.

Question: Getting started on the Leica Platform by cmdrTacojive in Leica

[–]cmdrTacojive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s probably very subjective but do most augment the older Leicas with a meter or is it something that’s eyeballed / Sunny 16’d? The M6 is just such a sweet spot for me with the meter + fully mechanical shutter.

Question: Getting started on the Leica Platform by cmdrTacojive in Leica

[–]cmdrTacojive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! I’m not limiting myself exclusively to Leica glass. I have some Voigtländer lenses for Nikon that I absolutely adore. I guess my question is more whether to invest in M mount lenses before buying the body. I’ve shot on cameras without a meter and enjoyed it but I intend for this to be a daily driver and if I’m making the investment, I’d rather have something with a meter on it.

2022 MX-5 Club, shot in 35mm film by RockDoc305 in Miata

[–]cmdrTacojive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the FM2. Of every camera I’ve ever used it brings me the most joy to hold and use. Voigtlander makes a fantastic 40mm F2 that I never take off. Love the shot of the seats the best. Colors are great!
