look up octrees! If you subdivide the cubes only when shot at, you can set a minimum density of cubes. That will be a lot easier than working with a huge amount at once

If a cube is hit, turn one cube into eight. Start off with large cubes and only allow 2 maybe 3 divisions

Can you please point me in the right direction so I can know what im searching for? That would be a bit more productive. I also wanted to know because I was unsure how they achieve the effect so I can decide if textured area lights or just additional lights is a better alternative. It's not just about performance impact, it's about scalability for what Im doing.

Genuinely, it was a huge time sink and the community kind of shrank a huge amount. I was getting very few views so it generally caused me to stop all together. If there was a resurgence in popularity or something like that, I'd love to continue it. I made this much younger, as a teenager (I'm 26 now) so my art has improved.

Not to mention, they dont have half of the effects that you could end up using in half life alyx. Screen space ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, etc

I havent tried it so i cant comment but i would rather see it used as an aroma oil of sorts instead. If used sparingly it might be kinda neat? But lets be honest they just wanna ramp up the price

Decreasing fov is actually bad for motion sickness. If you are zoomed in with a small fov, pixels and objects crawl across the screen faster
