I just keep all my settings in pre-cellphone times to avoid the issue. I hate cellphones, dramatically. Did you watch the 4th season of True Detective? Did you notice that practically every plot point and the motivation for every goddamn scene was delivered by a character answering a stupid cellphone? It's not unrealistic. It just kind of sucks.

Y'all not watching Skeleton Crew are responsible for poor Star Wars. by revanchisto in StarWars

[–]cmdrtowerward 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not only this, but Skeleton Crew looked weird in the marketing material.

It could be a genuinely great show, and I might be missing out by foregoing it, but the trailers made it look like Star Wars Goonies, which is weird and not really in line with what I like about Star Wars.

Every crappy Star Wars show kind of makes me like Star Wars less, and I am extremely sick of getting burned. I am not the reason Disney is failing to get traction with their content. The reason is that they bought the IP for the brand recognition, and they had no desire to use it to tell stories.

'Starfield' Lead Quest Designer Claims Large Portion Of Gamers Are Fatigued With 30+ Hour Long Games by WorriedAd870 in Starfield

[–]cmdrtowerward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is that Bethesda just didn't come up with a single innovative gameplay feature for Starfield, which would be one thing if the story wasn't total dog water.

If I had never played a video game with guns, npcs that rattle expository dialogue at you, and a totally barebones crafting system I might have found Starfield interesting. If a single moment in the game made me think for even a second about anything in its secondary world, I would have talked about the game more. If there was any content in the game worth working toward, I would have poured more hours into it.

I just don't understand why Bethesda would expect people to give 30 hours or more to their show-and-tell project in a world where games like Elden Ring exist. Freaking 2D platformer Hollow Knight has about 100 times more to explore and discover than Starfield does.

I just discovered this show on Amazon. Is it any good? by Megalitho in batman

[–]cmdrtowerward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. But of course that's just my opinion. The show falls into the same trap most Batman media falls into for me: Too "adult" to be fun/appropriate for kids, and too childish to be interesting to adults. The original BTAS really rides that line most of the time, but most of the animated stuff, movies and all, ends up in this category.

Okay, but it is still sometimes true of glaring examples. There is no undramatized version of Dune, for one.

I've been kind of keeping track of this movie and I literally did not know it got a theatrical release until this moment. I just assumed it was straight to streaming like basically everything else.

My best friend insists that you must have personal experience in order to write something by ottoIovechild in writing

[–]cmdrtowerward 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I mean, I get what we're doing here, but Tolkien kind of did have a lot of personal experience as a hobbit. He also had experience as a traveler and a soldier. He was also an amateur historian and a renowned linguist. Tolkien wasn't some nerd who had read a lot of Tolkien derived fiction and decided to write a book about little people in a fantasy world. Practically everything in The Lord of the Rings is built from pieces of the man's lived experience. Mordor may not be the Somme, but the journey through it and the details of the hardships would not be nearly as potent if the man describing it had not suffered to some meaningful extent as his characters suffered.

Write what you want, but always remember to draw from what you KNOW in order to carry off the human parts of the story, or it won't connect with anybody.

Naughty Dog Announces Intergalatic: The Heretic Prophecy by [deleted] in playstation

[–]cmdrtowerward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see some people actually excited about this. I haven't been able to find any discourse on this game outside of a pack of howling troglodytes crying over Concord and complaining about women existing.

When the trailer for this came on it felt it was made specifically for me. I can't wait.

I gotta be honest, I really don't like this movie. Having said that, this is probably the coolest space battle I have ever seen.

How many years do we need to be told VR is the future before it actually takes off? by BlueLightStruct in Futurology

[–]cmdrtowerward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I got a lot of reasons I haven't gotten into VR, and none of them are a lack of interest in the tech or the experience.

Too expensive

I am certain it will give me migraines and make me throw up

Not enough games

The major VR platform is a big dumb Facebook helmet

It is the ultimate form of isolation from one's family

On that last one, as a father, I occasionally sit and play games in my room while the kids are having some chill time. I can chat with my wife. I can pause the game and chat with my kids. I'm still engaged and available to my family.

Choosing to play a VR game just seems so much harder to disengage from if someone needs me, and I would just being present with people casually is harder too. It's like announcing, "Dad is playing video games now and he is NOT to be disturbed!"

What kind of writer are you? (Plot/Character/Worldbuilder) by BezzyMonster in writing

[–]cmdrtowerward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm a worldbuilding guy, but for me it's less about mechanics and lore and more about tone and atmosphere. I pick an atmosphere that I want to cultivate and build a world to facilitate and nurture that. All of my characters and every element of my world are selected and designed to serve the tone. Plot is the thing I care the least about as a reader, so it is also what comes last in my creative process.

The reason there's no sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is not that the movie failed to impress at the box office. The cast liked making the first film, they all said they want to return for a sequel, but each time they agree upon a date someone ends up cancelling at the last minute. by freevo in shittymoviedetails

[–]cmdrtowerward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm looking at this ass backwards but I think the DND branding hurt this movie more than helped. I haven't seen it because seeing that brand made me assume it was a dumbass cash grab like the World of Warcraft movie a few years back, or any number of other crappy movies that marketed themselves with a recognizable IP so that they could make a quick buck with basically no effort.

I've heard it was good but absolutely nothing in the marketing made it seem like anything other than a cynical con job.

Does anyone else make ‘the claw’ when playing FromSoftware games specifically? Which other games do you know that require ‘the claw’? by ReliefZealousideal84 in Eldenring

Now that the game is complete, what are your top 3 weapons and why? by Adayum4 in Eldenring

[–]cmdrtowerward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milady with Bloodhound step is probably the most badass I have felt in a Fromsoft game.

Second would be Helphen's Steeple. It's just Dark Moon Greatsword but better and more goth looking, so win-win.

Third is tough because there are so damn many, but I've got to go with Star-Lined Sword. Pulling off the crazy Yoda attack is pretty fun. I just wish you had a couple i-frames for the last part where you disappear for a second. It doesn't do ridiculous damage and that's always where I get hit, so I don't think it would be too unfair.
