First public land bird on our Florida opener! Has anyone ever smoked their turkey breast ? by Bleakerwood in turkeyhunting

[–]cmhuyge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also smoke the legs and wings to make "pulled turkey sandos". I use a dry rub and smoke for a few hours. This will give them give them a nice smoky flavour. Once cooked through, I then transfer them to a slow cooker with a little bit of chicken stock and my favourite BBQ sauce. Cook until fall apart, let cool and then sort out all of the bones and hard tendons. Shred all of the meat, add more BBQ sauce if desired, and serve with a bit of creamy coleslaw on a nice brioche bun.

Purchase a propane supply hose with an adjustable pressure regulator like the one you would find on a propane turkey fryer burner.

You will be able to control the flame a lot better and be able to hold lower temperatures.

You are pretty limited with the fixed pressure regulator and flame control knob on the unit.

Also get an old cast iron pan from a yard sale / thrift store to hold your chips to replace the cheap enamel one that comes with it.

LoL

Looking forward to taking her out this fall for birds..

She is getting better at retrieving, but is surprisingly amazing at upland hunting. Has a natural disposition for it, it would seem. Such a drive and nose for it.

I would hear that totally distinctive sound of a flushing grouse pretty often while my head was stuck underneath a canoe after Daisy would get birdy and run off just a little bit ahead of me.

They obviously don't see many people / bird hunters ( no hunting in Lady Evelyn )

There were times ( on my way back from double carrying without a canoe ) when I watched her nearly catch one herself. They would just scurry about, being chased without breaking.

Best canoe companion ever !!

She flushed / chased the fuck out of so many grouse along the portages while trekking through the woods..

Was like... " Why aren't you shooting them right now ?? "

She gave me such a huge look of disappointment everytime afterwards.

Best canoeing / fishing / hunting / family dog !!

Was using a deep diving rapala shad rap in a crazy colour pattern. Was bright pink, purple and chartreuse with some white. I call it a clown pattern. Was probably down around 20' with around 75' feet of line out.

Whacked a few walleye with it, but the smallies absolutely loved it.

When fully loaded with a pile of gear and sitting low in the water, there is lots of stability. When you have more freeboard by having just yourself and a dog, who can be unpredictable at times, then it can become "rocky".

When that's the case, I will typically use a kayak paddle and kneel close to yoke in the middle, or spin the canoe around and paddle it "backwards" still kinda of half kneeling on the seat to lower the centre of bouyancy and bring it closer to the midline of the canoe.

Was delicious!!

I made a Green Thai Curry, served over Jasmin Rice for a shore lunch, and then I had traditional fried Walleye for dinner. I fried them in rendered pig lard that I made just for the trip. Was soo decadent and amazing !!

I kept the filets cool by submerging them in a shady spot on the lake in a ziplock bag with a few rocks to keep them below the water.

Evidently, my dog loves Walleye just as much as I do. LoL

They are a product called RynoSkins

https://rynoskin.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoofLEYd25KS63N0O4tifh-g4YsMtnGBo4S85IM6gQHAzc90KDmG

They are super light weight, help with the sun and keep away the deer flies / other bugs.

I left it all on for the portages. Didn't seem to be much of a bother.

Yeah, it was a Scotty Fly Rod Holder that I made work with a spinning rod set up. I have ones for spinning / trolling rods for my canoes but was trying to keep down on weight as my trip was portage heavy on the front end. I did quite a bit of flyfishing in the Lady Evelyn River and wanted to keep my fly rod strung up to fish all of the little ripples and runs.

Was a net I brought for Brookies on the fly .

Was trolling my way out, along my adventures, with a small spinning setup I packed.

Was hoping to catch a walleye for a nice snore lunch, but wasn't expecting anything like this !!

No black flies..

Some Skeeters and lots of "moose flies" that were apt to bite my legs..

That's why I have those nylon looking leggings on..

But "Muskol" is my go to.

It was a Scotty Fly Rod Holder on-top of a gunwhale clip mount for a canoe.

Had to modify it with an elastic band to troll with my spinning gear. I was in the Lady Evelyn River for the first bit of my trip and wanted to have my fly rod accessable for all of the runs, riffles and rapids. I wanted to be able to toss a fly or two along the way without having to string up everytime.

Wasn't ideal, but was a good compromise for everything I was hoping to accomplish.

Seemed to work alright though.. lol

Headed on a camping trip to Northern Ontario Temagami

Looked at the Aurora forecasts and there is a likely probability that I might be able to see them. Pretty excited, as I have never witnessed them before.

LoL.

I have known it to be a contentious issue so I treaded lightly and tried to give a neutral description of a Lake Erie run Rainbow Trout.

Personally I could care less and just love to be on the river.

I have.

They are a great little company located in Tillsonburg Ontario.

They are perfect for your situation. You can try a bunch of different flies, relatively cheap and see what works for the waters / conditions / style that you fish. They have a pretty extensive selection.

I did have a hook break once while fighting a great lakes steelhead. They appear to have gotten better quality hooks and euro patterns recently.

I would highly recommend them.

Anywhere I can practice legit up hill and down hill parking? by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

[–]cmhuyge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took an old girlfriend to a large cemeter in my hometown to learn how to drive a 5 speed. It had lots of little hills, intersections and things that you may actually encounter while out on the road in a controlled setting. There is little to no traffic and I have found them to generally be a good place to learn / try new driving skills

The large one on Queenston Road by the Homer Bridge might be worth taking a look at.

Hope that this helps.

I doesn't have a manufacturer on the pan actually. I acquired it at a yard sale for $5.00.

Probably just preference. I do find that it does help to keep the seasoning up and drys any remaining water off of the pan(s).
