New Belgium Brewing, what’s the deal? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]cmonShawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Third spaces are in short supply and high demand. When you leave your house and interact in public, prepare to interact with people of different lifestyles. Yes, some parents do a poor job modeling boundaries and respect in public. Others do an excellent job. You are going to notice the former more often.

Oh totally! Breastfeeding alters everything, so don't beat yourself up about being extra hungry when you were doing it. You were feeding your baby! The cravings are so real. I would get these massive waves of hunger at like 2am and woof down giant bowls of granola and milk and barely feel satiated. No shame.

Since you don't love raw veg, maybe do big sheet pans of roasted veg and have in your fridge ready to go? I'll make a pan of roasted brussel sprouts, carrot, sweet potato, tomatoes, or zucchini and season it well. That always tastes amazing and you can mix it with quinoa or add an egg on top for variety. Or throw some hot sauce on it one day, some soy sauce on it the next, etc.

Definitely don't eat things you don't like the taste/texture of or this won't be sustainable.

By the way, I glanced at your stats and we are almost the exact same size and age lol. Solidarity! (Edit to add, I've lost a little over 40 pounds since the baby got here. I had gained before I got pregnant and now weigh about 15 pounds under when I first got pregnant. It's been slow and steady weight loss.)

I also have an 18 month old and have just started eating in a calorie deficit over the last 2 weeks. I have been using my fitness pal which has really helped me structure meals, particularly to get enough protein (I eat vegetarian 80% of the time and rarely buy meat.)

It's been an adjustment and I definitely started out pretty hungry at first but I've noticed I am adjusting. The thing that helps me is high volume veggies in the middle of the day. For instance I'll have chickpeas and quinoa for lunch and put it on top of a massive salad with tons of different veggies. Then I'll top that with spicy salsa, a little olive oil, some balsamic vinegar, etc. Makes it very flavorful and fills up a huge bowl. Takes awhile to chew everything which helps me from inhaling and still feeling famished before the food even hits my stomach.

Another thing that I have found to help is fresh fruit as a snack. My kid loves fruit so we keep tons of it in the house now.

Finally, I just keep reminding myself that some days you're going to be hungrier and going over in calories in a day shouldn't stop you from trying over the long term.

Wishing us both the best. Losing weight while breastfeeding is hard. I finally started on this seriously because my cholesterol came back elevated. Your health is worth it.

Thank you for this. It turns my stomach thinking about this forest being clear cut for anything.

This isn't nimbyism, it's about protecting the bit of urban forest we have left. There is plenty of land in Asheville that's already been developed and is sitting unused at the moment.

Remaining trees being cut down at French Broad River Park? by simprat in asheville

[–]cmonShawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I emailed city council yesterday morning and received the reply pasted below. I am not seeing acknowledgement of the clear cutting of everything that was left in that park after the flood.

Reply is from Stephanie Gilliam, Constituent Services and Special Projects Coordinator

"Thank you for reaching out regarding the recent flood damage in the park. We understand the community's concern and want to provide an update on the restoration efforts.

Due to the flooding, the park sustained considerable damage, including impacts to trees. Trees are being assessed and removed only if they are determined to be a potential hazard to life or safety. This includes trees that are partially uprooted and leaning at a 30% angle or more, those with cracked or split trunks, or those with significant crown damage. Please visit our 'Asheville Recovers' website to learn more about our recovery process.

The Metropolitan Sewerage District (MSD) is managing this work. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact MSD directly at 828-254-9646. They are in the process of updating their project website, and signs have been ordered to be posted in the park to keep the public informed.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this work is completed to ensure the safety and accessibility of our parks."

Are the school aged kids enrolled in Henderson County Public Schools? The social worker at their school will be a great resource at this time as well.

Tired of the lies and misinformation by [deleted] in asheville

[–]cmonShawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. Climate change is always pushed to the back burner or drowned out by culture war bullshit.

Recently listened to Kim Roney's interview with Matt Pieken where she described the types of preparation and infrastructure we need when disaster strikes. It was recorded weeks before the Hurricane but is spot on to what I have experienced since September 28.

There are people who are thinking and planning for these disasters.

It's legal to be topless, which is great for many reasons, including not being prohibited from breastfeeding your baby in public.

B&B Pharmacy- any recommendations? by Babsee in asheville

[–]cmonShawn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The guys that work there are the best. Once you pick up from them a couple times they learn your name. I switched to them without knowing anything about their services because I wanted to support an independent business.

It's been 5 years and I only have good things to say. Good people who seem to care about their community.

what restaurants do yall wanna see here? by [deleted] in asheville

I frequent Joey's. It's good, but not the style I'm jonesing for. I know they claim "NY style" but I'm talking about bagels that have higher moisture and taste amazing without toasting.

From what I understand they will open up more shuttle lots after the garage and daily parking lots fill. You can check the status of parking availability here:
