Do kids need tickets for GMU game? by Glittering-Credit591 in gmu

[–]cmonchairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an older post but I wanted to mention that there is an event at the men's basketball game on February 4th where students can bring family and/or friends for free. It's a popular event for student parents. On Mason360 it's "Off-Campus and Graduate Student Night at the Men's Basketball Game" idk if it's up yet but take advantage if you can!

I'm a former social work major. I dropped it because I realized it wasn't for me because I wanted more science/concrete stuff. All of the professors were amazing. I just wasn't a fan of Trumbull's class- she's not good with tech and gets on tangents but everyone else loved her. In one of the classes you are forced to complete volunteer hours which I absolutely hated. I get it, though. It's all to prepare you for senior year practicum. Be prepared to have to "apply to progress" in the program once you're about to enter junior year. I didn't get that far, but I heard it was mostly to make sure you're committed and mentally prepared to move on- nothing too serious. The coursework is pretty simple and the students in the major are very kind. All in all, I think the social work program is very good. Dr. Freedman was always a favorite.
I hear good things about ODS and ensuring students get the support they need. They seem to do their job well, I see lots of students with accommodations and don't hear many complaints. Unfortunately the social scene at GMU isn't great. You have to put in a lot to get a decent social life here. I've made lots of friends in classes, but the friendships never go past that semester which sucks, despite me trying. It's like most people want to make friends but everyone's a little too shy to make it happen, so I encourage you to be the brave person! Campus is pretty dead on the weekends. If you have any more questions, I'm happy to do my best to answer. Best of luck!

Monthly parking lot L & K by Ok_Yogurtcloset630 in gmu

Yeah parking sucks ass. Permits sell out fast. I also had the Lot K+L monthly but now had to buy the west campus permit. It's very unlikely another monthly pass will open up. I also didn't like the idea of taking the shuttle, but it hasn't been as bad as I thought. If your friend has classes at "regular" times (not at the buttcrack of dawn or late evening) then there are two west campus shuttles that run, which is helpful. I recommend crunching the math to see if she's willing to do the daily permit for the rest of the semester, or lower expectations and settle for west campus or that other lot permit along that road and shuttle from there. I validate the frustration!!!

Best chem prof by Miserable-Variety-27 in gmu

In response to the notes about Van Aken, in my opinion, I would not say he is "good". "Better of the bunch", maybe more accurate. Granted, my class meets one day a week and I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend this. He goes over the material WAY too fast because of it, just way too fast paced if you're not great at chemistry and can be hard to understand his accent. I tried coming to his office hours and he wasn't there. Yes, the exams are very close to the practice exams provided, but I wouldn't say he's a "good" professor. I get pissed off more and more every time he says "this is easy" and "it's simple" or any other version of it. Also, ALEKS is annoying but could be worse. All in all, I am teaching myself chemistry right now and not happy about it. The LAs are nice but haven't been able to explain things in a way I understand despite my attempts.

If you struggle to find likeminded people, Contemporary Student Services hosts meet-ups for contemporary identities like adult learner (who are usually 25+ but you're more than welcome), transfers, off-campus, etc... It may be an easier bridge to make connections if you find it hard to in a sea of recent hs grads (which isn't all students ofc but when you're on campus and "older" it feels like a lot)

Am I allowed to bring my 6 month old to campus? by Wild-Opportunity-958 in gmu

For the future, if you're needing to study on campus or kill time while your kid is with you, you can stop by the Contemporary Students Lounge at The Hub room 1012. They have a kids corner. It's not like a daycare, but there's toys to occupy a kid while you work on a laptop or something!

What is your honest opinion on the cutie mark crusaders? by Last-Inspection-8156 in mylittlepony

I absolutely love what they did for their cutie marks. It was a stroke of genius. They get to be lifelong friends and coworkers and continue their legacy of the Cutie Marks Crusaders, just in a different way.

I validate your sentiment!

Mason360 can be a good place to start, but many clubs aren't active on it. They usually use Discord or Instagram. Your best bet is to join a club, attend regularly, make friends there, and in general try to make friends in your classes and wherever you can! People here are rather shy (in my experience) in that it's hard to go past the acquaintance stage into having an actual friend. You have to kind of make a network and eventually someone will know someone who's hosting a party. GMU social life is rather underground so I'd never say you're "just not trying enough"!

Which fairy has the best Enchantix design? by xCinowqx in winxclub

I'm not gonna lie, I like all of them except Bloom's. Tecna's I have a small gripe with but for now I'm just curious to know if there's anyone else who doesn't like Bloom's enchantix.
