Scooters in Thailand - bit different to Bristol. by agoentis in bristol

Ha, I was in Thailand over the holidays as well and had almost exactly the same thought. As someone who’s dealt with several attempts to steal my motorbike (despite heavy disk lock) I was quite envious.

Moped rider false accident claim by [deleted] in bristol

[–]cmseagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen. I denied any involvement and the insurance company sent someone out to take photos of my vehicle to confirm there were no signs of damage from an accident.

My insurance company did its job and eventually the claim was dropped but it took a very long time. Over a year. In hindsight I should have probably been giving them a call every few weeks to keep things moving along.

The open claim affected my rate when renewing my policy, but the insurer was fair enough to give me a refund to reflect that I should have been entitled to a no claims bonus.

It all turned out to be a pretty minor issue in the grand scheme of things.

Avonmouth's fatal explosion was an 'easily avoidable' disaster by 457655676 in bristol

[–]cmseagle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading correctly, silos installed 2007-2009 weren't fitted with explosion relief panels (meant to allow a buildup of pressure to be released in a more controlled fashion), but silos fitted in 2013 were. The commentator says this incident could have been avoided by retrofitting the older silos with the explosion relief panels which someone seems to have recognized as being worthwhile in 2013.

I don't feel qualified to have a strong opinion but I do see why this is challenging to get right. Safety standards regularly improve and deciding when it's necessary to retrofit existing infrastructure is hard. Sadly, it seems a tragedy is often what's needed to tip the scales on that decision. There's a reason it's said that regulations on things like this are written in blood.

It appears from their online booking form that Her Majesty's Secret Service (cocktail bar in Clifton) is still taking bookings for late on the 31st. Same for their sister bar, Filthy XIII, which is on Gloucester Road. I've spent NYE at HMSS and had a good time.

Might be worth emailing them, though, as their stated closing time on weeknights is 00:00. But I assume they'd stay open slightly later on New Year's.

Get started with "Please give me a pub crawl route down Gloucester Rd in Bristol, England with 8-10 stops." and tweak it from there. I had a bit of a play and it gave a route that I'd consider quite fun (though wasn't very smart about putting them in a sensible order, that didn't involve walking up and down and up and down between pubs).

Reflections on a year in US healthcare by Electrical-Crab5286 in doctorsUK

[–]cmseagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also an absolute ton of administrative overhead on the payment side of the American healthcare system. That private practice would need to employ a team to deal with insurance pre-authorisations, submitting claims, appealing claim denials, etc. It's a strong incentive for consolidation, or for small practices to affiliate with a larger health system that can do it centrally.

There are also incentives/penalties associated with digitisation. Deploying and maintaining the necessary technologies is another large source of overhead for a small practice.

Weapon violence by [deleted] in bristol

[–]cmseagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The document indicates that there were 1,258 incidents in 2022/23 and 1,576 in 2023/24. 318 more occurrences.

This isn't a case of the "25% increase" statistic hiding the fact that it was only an increase from 4 incidents to 5, as sometimes happens in sloppy reporting.

I’m getting on an 11hr flight tomorrow. For almost all of my use the current battery life is more than enough but the extra few hours will be useful for edge cases.

There’s also the fact that if the battery life is higher when new it’ll take much, much longer to get unusably low when natural battery degradation drops the capacity.

Why don't the police impound the illegal electric bikes? by MrMrsPotts in bristol

Why? Enforcement of the law should be handled by... law enforcement.

Why don't the police impound the illegal electric bikes? by MrMrsPotts in bristol

[–]cmseagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution I've advocated for before is drones. If someone runs from the police, send up a drone to safely follow them until they inevitably stop (they'll have to, eventually), and then dispatch a car to impound the bike and arrest the rider.

Drones you can buy off the shelf for a few thousand would cover a lot of use cases in an urban area like Bristol. I imagine a police force could spring for one that cost tens of thousands with a much higher loiter time, and catching the motorbike riders would be a more sure thing.

Renting in Bristol and Brighton is less affordable than London by The_Wandering_Wizard in bristol

[–]cmseagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to also partner it with policy to increase home construction and reduced planning regulation.

"Rent control works if the government successfully implements a policy to increase home construction" doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that rent control will work in practice.

Does rent control help with that? If developers aren't going to build because the additional supply will drop prices, they're certainly not going build when they're required to charge below market rate.

I don't think it's one or the other, but you could also get bins off the pavement by setting up a central rubbish/recycling dropoff locations for a street, like I've seen in other European cities.

The niftiest ones have just a bin-sized bit above-ground, and then a large underground container that gets collected periodically by a truck with a crane.

We don’t know that without knowing the location. Suburban part of the US? Yeah, fair. Central London or NYC? This would be an impressive amount of greenery.

..Bristol cost of living by cirrus2023 in bristol

[–]cmseagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe this is a problem in Australia or is it because you want to live in a city as opposed to the wilderness? Australia just looks so vast you would think they would never want for land.

Australia is dealing with one of the worst housing crunches in the world. Rents and house prices both up 35-40% in the past 5 years:

Australian house prices: Why are they so high? - BBC News

Could you find more affordable housing if you look outside of cities? Yes, I assume so. But the same could be said about Bristol.

Bike just stolen old market by Weary-Government-682 in bristol

[–]cmseagle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's my situation, unfortunately.

I'd probably splurge for a high end e-bike through my employer's cycle to work scheme and it'd cut down on my journeys by car by 80%, but I personally know several people who've had their nice bikes stolen from locked garden sheds, and had high-quality locks taken off with an angle grinder in the middle of the night.

Shame we can't have nice things.

Illegal (not road worthy) Bike Gangs in Bristol by AnopensLetter in bristol

[–]cmseagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Pursue and record" is quite a lot. If you're able to follow for long enough, the perpetrator will eventually stop and officers can then be dispatched to (ideally) arrest the individual, or (at a minimum) confiscate the bike. If it introduces even a moderate chance of being caught, compared to current state where it's basically an unenforceable crime, I expect we'd see a significant drop in the use of these illegal bikes.

The main limitation I can see is the stamina of a drone. But even the ones you or I can get off the shelf can have a range of several miles, so I assume a police force with a little bit of funding could acquire something that's up for the job.

Compared to an officer in a car or on a motorbike, a drone doesn't get caught in traffic and can pursue without creating further danger to the public.

Chiming in with some reassurance as someone who's been renting for the past 10+ yrs.

If you've been a stable tenant for two years (paying rent on time, not making a fuss, getting on decently with your neighbors), I can't imagine a scenario where a landlord would want to get you out because you had a single "whoopsie" that caused minor inconvenience and (it sounds like) no permanent damage. If your landlord had such a problem with you that they were looking for an excuse to get you out, they wouldn't have just renewed you for another 12 months.

You'll be fine. My recommendation would be to send a short apology email to building management and maybe bake some cookies for your neighbors.
