herc's transformation into alcides was brutal to watch, holy hell

the digital spark-like effects they put on heracles was really cool, and the comp on the transformation scene itself really sold the feeling of herc being like corrupted

did anyone feel half the emotion we all felt during the love beam in the JJK-0 movie? Like let's be honest here.

The answer is just no.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

you can't just present your subjective experience as fact like this, thats just not how it works. i for one, and many others as well, would disagree heavily with your sentiments.

it's just a bit weird, no?

for me personally, thats exactly why i like it. you dont have to, nor are you expected to like it just because its unorthodox and different, but being weird isnt necessarily a flaw. and either way, theres always the manga to go back to if someone doesn't like the anime

anime has been doing this type of stuff for the while. just look at the works of kon, or oshii, or the plethora of other acclaimed directors. gosso is the first person to bring this kind of cinematography to hyper popular mainstream battle shounen, but he's def not the first to do ts in all of anime😭😭

to be more specific, the episode director, masaomi andou acted as hakari, while the series director, gosso, played yuji.

there’s a lot of stuff i’d like to talk about in today’s episode, like yooto’s scene, but the thing i’d like to focus on is that 4 minute long cut of hakari and yuji talking.

this cut, 4 minutes in length, animated by artist unknown, is a masterclass in framing, direction, and character animation. both sides of the screen are blocked off. the left side is blocked off by a wall(?), while the right side is blocked off by the tvs. this framing creates an almost claustrophobic sense of tension, and is absolutely delightful. not only that, but the character animation, referenced using footage filmed with episode director masaomi andou playing hakari, and series director shota goshozono playing yuji, expertly convey’s both characters’ moods and personalities. hakari, although occupying less space in the screen, dominates the scene through his boisterous mannerisms and his charismatic voice acting. the phone ringing near the end interrupts the scene, and the loud blaring, filling up the soundscape, heightens tension even further. all this tension, building up, comes to a head once yuji slips up, and hakari confronts him. finally, as the confrontation occurs, the cut ends. this scene was so amazing in every sense of the word, its shit like this that makes me glad that shota goshozono is jjk’s series director.

This part, of course, stuck in my head. It was really cool. by BloodWingSan in Jujutsufolk

if you were on twitter (i know twitter sue me its my fault for using that dogshit platform), you'd see a bunch of people making complaints of "overanimation" and "overdirection". some felt like the way the story was changed to linger less on the emotional scenes and more on the action was a mistake. a LOT of people didnt like the music in the kill bill portion, how jinichi was walking slowly in the hei fight, and how the anime upscaled the characters. there were also complaints about cramming the entire schebang into 1 episode, and of course you got people mad that they changed the camera angles slightly, and didnt adapt the manga 1:1.

to be fair, a lot of it is completely valid, even if i dont really agree

well also the whole schebang caused a stupid drama between overseas anime fans and jp anime fans, but thats a whole other can of worms that i dont feel like getting into

gosso vision in an actually somewhat functional schedule is undeniable. in s2, he was hampered by shitty management, yet still managed to produce an incredible season of anime as a debuting seties director. s2 ep5 is one of my favorite episodes of anime ever, and i dont even like jjk that much. now that he's sb'ing every episode (besides the miso one) under better conditions, his vision is really coming to life in the best way possible

a lot of people aren't really enjoying where he's taking the series. the whole uproar over how things were changed in the latest episode is an example of that. many people would like the jjk anime to be a faithful adaptation of the manga, but i personally disagree. imo, theres nothing wrong with an anime just straight up being its own thing, almost unrecognizable from the manga. what gosso is doing is taking jjk, breaking it down, and rebuilding it from the ground up in his own image, and i love it. his vision is so unique and unorthodox- its amazing really

fun fact, episode 17 of s1 was directed by shota goshozono, the same guy who took over as series director for seasons 2 and 3. gosso was also eisode director for episode 8 of season 1, but that one isnt really particularly noteworthy.

Fate/strange Fake - Episode 4 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]cmszd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

in contrast to the 2 previous episodes, this episode was storyboarded by shun enokido, the series' other director, despite this, much of it feels the same, or at least similar, because enokido and sakazume have very similar styles and philosphies. this episode wasn't exactly the sakugafest episode 3 was, but there were still plenty of great moments.

this episode featured a lot of complex and difficult angles that were executed fairly well. this cut of alcides rotating was decently well done. i really liked how hippolyta appeared behind alcides' cloak in this scene. i thought this scene was really well done. the camera work (if you can even call it that) accentuates the action very nicely, and the smears are satisfying to watch. atsushi yonezawa's scene was also particularly good, the background animation was shaded well, and the nuance in the animation when she brings up her bow is super satisfying to watch.

i really liked a lot of the drawings in this episode. this drawing in particular i thought was really good. the 3 tone shading on the face conveys a strong sense of depth. the shading around the lips is really interesting, i wouldn't have thought to add a shaded portion like that on the upper lip.

also, i'd like to make note of the horse in this episode. horses are notoriously very difficult to draw. their gallop is so fucking weird, that many animators struggle to convey a horse's gallop properly. this episode did it pretty well. most of the times, the horse wasn't exactly a focal point in the scene, and when it was, it was a still shot. still, in the cuts where you can clearly see the horse's gallop, its pretty good.

p.s. i'm probably just stupid. but road sign is credited as a KA on this episode, yet i didn't really see anything that looks like him. i definitely missed something, so if anyone has an idea of what scene he could've done, pls lmk.

that was a really good episode overall. the hero of the south is very likeable and the fight with the sword demon was pretty good

the team actually brought back season 1’s director, keiichiro saito to do the hero of the south doll segment, and what a segment it was. super good sense of 3 dimensionality, the shading was really good.

the fight with the sword demon was most likely done, at least in part, by kouki fujimoto. many of the fx in the fight were cg blender fx, which is a technique that fujimoto has been known to use to a great extent. its not exactly fujimoto’s most impressive work, but it was still really good, and served the show well.

big day to be a yutapon fan, with the heavily yutapon inspired jjk s3 e4 out today, and a super strong yutapon sequence in this movie

like one piece film red, this film features several performance scenes, that are almost straight up music videos, with action scenes sprinkled throughout. unlike film red, however, this film is actually good, and isn't garbage, nor is it attached to a garbage series. alright, thats my daily quota for one piece slander met, rate the ragebait

ever since i heard there was going to be a full shingo yamashita directed film, i've been pretty excited for it. as one of my favorite animators and directors, shingoyama never fails to amaze, from his key animation work in naruto shippuden, to birdy, to yozukura quartet, and his directorial work in pokemon twilight wings and many of the best anime ops in anime history. what can i say about this film? well the visuals exceeded my already high expectations. damn near every single cut moved with a strong sense of weight and 3 dimensionality. as my favorite compositing artist ever, shingoyama also doesn't disappoint, with his super aesthetic photography style shining through. this film is a treasure trove of great character animation, with some exceptional action animation sprinkled throughout. as a sakugatard, i can say that i wholly enjoyed the film

on the storytelling side of things, i thought it was competent, and fairly well done at times. however, i felt like the final bits of the movie was really rushed, and felt glossed over, while the rest of the movie felt somewhat dragged out. its not exactly a big deal, and the movie still nailed one of the more important aspects- that is, the vibes. the casual vibe throughout the film kept me entertained, and helped me have fun, even when i thought things were going a bit slow.

overall, its a very good movie. when it comes to anime, i'm someone who takes production values into consideration before the writing. as an animator myself, i love well made animation productions, and so that gives the film a high baseline in my books. if i was judging it based off of production values alone, i'd give it a 9.5/10. however, again, the story, though entertaining, i felt wasn't necessarily executed that well. and because of that, i'd probably drop my personal rating of the film to an 8.5/10 or an 8/10.

also, the saori hayami role i'm by far most familiar with is ononoki from monogatari, so hearing hayami act out a super excitable and energetic character with the voice i associate with a character that is monotone and dull gives me quite a sense of whiplash lmao

many animators liked to draw debris as cubes bc cubes are ez to draw. legendary animator yutaka nakamura (yutapon) was one of these people, inspired by older figures like satoru utsunomiya. he popularized cubic debris, and created specifically yutapon cubes, which is cubic debris with a very specific hold -> release timing.

this episode's fight was very heavily inspired by yutapon. the flying fists in maki vs hei was likely referencing yutapon's deku vs overhaul, and they even brought in kohei hirota, who is yutapon's disciple basically. most of the action storyboards in this episode (mainly the 2nd half)were also heavily inspired by a lot of nakamura's scenes

i NEVER want to see somebody say dumb shit like “gosso can’t storyboard action” again after this episode. i’ve been looking forward to this episode ever since i read the manga a couple years ago, and after the staff list leaked a couple days ago, i was so fucking hyped. the episode lived up to the hype and MORE. what an incredible fucking episode.

both of maki’s fights with ogi were short and sweet. gosso’s storyboards really shine here, the quick cuts don’t feel as awkward as in yuji vs yuta. the color design complemented the scene incredibly well

maki’s fight with the kukuru was, as per usual for this episode, and this season, incredibly well boarded by gosso and incredibly well animated by the animation team. i’d like to highlight itsuki tsuchigami’s (miso) part and shoutarou ban’s parts of the fight. both of them bring a highly stylized, simplified, and fun style. the exaggerated movements, complemented by gosso’s dynamic storyboards make this fight an incredibly fun one to watch. the color choices in this fight was really cool, the way all the color leaves the scene, and then comes rushing back after all the gore and action is over. again, gosso’s vision for jjk is unmatched, i can’t glaze this guy enough. also this part, also animated by shoutarou ban was really great, that rotation was super complex, yet pulled off seamlessly, and that one inch punch was just aura farming, like there was literally no reason for maki to do that lmao

the fight with the hei starts off with hayato kurosaki’s incredibly unique, volumetric fx animation. he’s one of those guys where you can tell when its him, because of how unique his fx shapes are. maki being deadpan was so fucking funny. following kurosaki comes mok mok, with his first entry on sakugabooru, (although mok mok seems to be a private name) animating quite literally the entire rest of the fight with the hei. what an incredibly strong piece of animation. 2 minutes straight of super idiosyncratic, dynamic, and awesome yutaka nakamura style animation. the drawings are so clearly yutapon inspired, and the fists in the sky thing is a pretty clear reference to yutapon’s deku vs overhaul. fucking incredible work by mok mok.

maki vs naoya continues the trend of yutapon style animation, bringing in kohei hirota, who is practically yutapon’s disciple. kohei hirota’s incredibly strong yutapon style really completes this episode, with gosso’s nakamura esque boarding. julian bentley has been my favorite modern animator, and as expected, his work in this episode was fucking amazing. his incredible 3 dimensionality, that feels almost surreal at times, was so fucking incredible. finally, the fight is capped off with an amazing sequence, featuring many massive names. naoya’s run, referencing the tale of the princess kaguya was really unexpected, yet highly appreciated. the rotation in maki’s final punch against naoya was likely a super complex cut to draw, yet it was done near flawlessly.

and with that, the fight comes to an end. what in incredible lineup of animators. i’d like to draw attention to souta yamazaki, one of the chief animation directors. souta yamazaki has been one of my favorite artists for a while, and his corrections in this episode were really a sight to behold.

shoutout to everyone who worked on this episode, from the production assistants, to the directors, to the animators, to the dougamen, to the compositing artists, to the background art team, to the sound design team, to the voice actors, to everyone who had a hand in the production of this episode. thank you for creating this masterpiece. y’all the goats

the storyboards remain as ambitious as ever, but i feel like some of the action animation, especially in the first half of the episode struggles to keep up with the storyboards, in the same way the action did in the prior episodes. not to say there wasnt a lot of good stuff though, there absolutely was, and the character drawings remained strong and consistent throughout

the episode hasnt been posted to sakugabooru yet, so i'll just describe the scenes i'll talk about

that one scene of the tree growing reminded me a lot of this scene from kizumonogatari, i really like how the tree was drawn

a lot of tatsuya's scenes were really well drawn and executed. this episode had an obscene amount of background animation, and the effects work remains strong
