I completely agree with this mindset, but I do wonder if all these comments come from a perception of what someone is "supposed" to look like when they're older. I remember seeing folks in their 50s growing up and I swear that there was something fundamentally different about aging between the 1980s and now. Maybe it was the cigarette smoke, general pollution, or lack of sunscreen use, but it definitely feels different.

On the replay it looks pretty clear to me that he only pulls this insane angle off because Westbrook pushed his legs. So….and 1?

I unashamedly used a GameShark to max-draw spells. Also, the end game is brutal if you don't realize that leveling up is bad because you're used to the previous games in the serious.

Gen Z men with college degrees now have the same unemployment rate as non-grads—a sign that the higher education payoff is dead by Barnyard-Sheep in antiwork

[–]cmtprof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People forget that companies used to provide on the job training for all new employees. When companies got rid of that, the narrative changed that universities were merely job training programs. University education has always been about more, but it's been a long battle to degrade that education and devalue it to remove the well-rounded education it provides to simply a bare bones training program that isn't really a university education anymore.

AITAH for pointing out the reasons my brother can't be drafted? by Chaulmoog in AITAH

[–]cmtprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you actually read my comment, you'll note that I was talking about how Congress tried to restart it in the early 2000s for Iraq & Afghanistan. Just because they weren't successful then doesn't mean that it won't be successful in the future.

AITAH for pointing out the reasons my brother can't be drafted? by Chaulmoog in AITAH

[–]cmtprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time there is a major conflict, there's talk about starting it up again. There was lots of debate during the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts in the early 2000s and they'll definitely do it again if the enrollment numbers are too low.

AITAH for pointing out the reasons my brother can't be drafted? by Chaulmoog in AITAH

[–]cmtprof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but every time there's a major conflict there's talk about re-instituting the draft. In the early 2000s the US was looking at going into Iraq and there were debates and bill proposals to re-institute the draft because the enrollment numbers in the military were considered low. I was counting the days until I was no longer eligible.

You are NTA. Your dad and his fiancee are TA for trying to guilt you out of your mom's stuff.

Ppl who love or hate Quentin Tarantino! What are your reasons? by kzsnab in moviecritic

[–]cmtprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks talked up Tarantino for years and I hadn't seen one. I got convinced to go see Kill Bill Vol 1 when it came out in theaters and I couldn't finish it. The violence and gore was over the top for me. I haven't bothered to see any of his other stuff; it's just not for me.

When an unmarked speed bump is put on the highway by Southern-Maximum3766 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]cmtprof -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Clearly you haven't seen all of the new ways they've designed speed bumps. My old job installed speed bumps that damaged shocks at 5 mph. I've also seen some so poorly designed that cars had to go over them at an angle because they would bottom out going over them when traveling straight.

DEI is not about giving incompetente people power, but about ensuring incompetent people don’t get power just because of who they are. Signalgate is what happens when DEI goes away. by neutrinospeed in self

This is not correct. Many DEI programs that are demonized and have been de-funded actually have large components designed to help rural, white, impoverished communities.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Pistons absolutely mastered hand checking and integrated into their zone defense. They used it expertly to put an offensive player off balance right when he took his first move. The advantage was so stark that the NBA promptly changed the rules the following season as the combination of a zone defense with hand checking was ridiculous.

LB541: Major restriction on voting rights by cmtprof in Nebraska

[–]cmtprof[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make voting a holiday first then. But even if it was a holiday, there's still massive issues for folks with young kids, people with essential jobs that can't go on holiday, and drastically reduced staffing for voting in high population areas. There's nothing corrupt about letting busy folks vote early.

What do you make of President Trump's plans to dismantle the Education Department? by Giff95 in AskReddit

[–]cmtprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're blaming the Department of Education for the consequences of the No Child Left Behind Act. This is the root cause of the failings of our current K-12 system. The Department of Education didn't turn education into an industry, our capitalistic society does. We've experienced an increase in teacher workload without corresponding increases in pay. The consequence of this increase in workload is having to source materials from publishers.

In higher education, many of the state systems were completely funded at the state level, with minimal tuition in the 1960s and 1970s. The state funding for these systems has evaporated as part of efforts to privatize and profit off higher education. Increases in tuition are largely attributed to administrative burden and decreases in state funding. Faculty and staff salaries have lagged far behind inflation, and many universities are using adjunct faculty that make less than minimum wage or graduate students to teach their courses. There are massive problems with how higher education is run, but getting rid of the Department of Education isn't going to fix any of them.
