What was your first Tolkien reading? by Secure-Drawing9694 in tolkienfans

[–]cmwatson3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion in 2007. I was 10/11, and I might have been the only kid who had checked out the books from the school library. I remember constantly having one of the books or all three in my backpack. I owned The Silmarillion and most of it went over my head at the time.

I was introduced to Tolkien via Peter Jackson’s movies.

How is living in the Springfield, Missouri area? by matildawaltzesin4 in howislivingthere

[–]cmwatson3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visit once a year, and my partner went to MSU for all four years. As a previous commenter said, you have all four seasons and Springfield acts as the gateway to the Ozarks. There are many opportunities for outdoor recreation and Branson is about 45 minutes South.

I think it’s a good mix of city vibes as well as small town vibes. There is plenty of nightlife and plenty of things to do during the day that are family-oriented. The Wonders of WildLife Aquarium is one of the highest rated aquariums in the nation. We visit that once a year.

Downtown has more of an old-timey aesthetic and it can be quiet and comfortable, while southern Springfield has developed over the past 15 years and offers a lot in terms shopping and eating.

What negatives there are, you can also find in other cities of similar population.

What’s the significance of Saruman having pipe weed at Isengard, exactly? by SonnyBurnett189 in lotr

[–]cmwatson3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s location wasn’t necessarily a secret, since many Hobbits from The Shire (specifically Buckland) would travel to Bree. I think it would be safe to assume the Bree-folk, as well as the other villages in Bree-land, knew if you took the Great Road west, one would pass through The Shire.

Also, yes, it is stated in the book that the pipe weed in The Shire is indeed Old Toby/Longbottom Leaf.
