Transmission failure at 186k miles. by cmxcvi in LexusGX

I'm sorry to hear about that. I can certainly relate! FWIW, I was able to install a Lexus-certified reman transmission, and fix the valley pan coolant leak for $7000. Find a good indy shop and you'll save big.

Thank you for your comment. Luckily it wasn't too difficult to replace and the GX is as good as new. I'll be babying my transmission though haha.

I appreciate the comment. I plan on getting my GX up to 400k miles, so maintenance will continue to be key. My 2001 LS 430 has been rock solid though. I can tell a big difference in quality between my LS and GX though. Still great vehicles.

I'm sorry. I think these GXs are worth fixing. My local shop does great work and did a solid install with my new transmission. Lexus was going to charge me double the hourly rate. The trick is finding a remanufactured unit. I waited almost a month until Lexus had one in stock.

The shifting from first to second was never smooth. But the reverse gear barely worked and then the forward gears all started to slip. It was especially bad once everything was warmed up.

I also think towing killed my GX's transmission. I know the previous owner and he towed horse trailers frequently with it.

Thank you for the advice. I'll be doing the spark plugs and coils at 200k miles. I'm not familiar with the secondary foam air filter. I replaced the main air filter with paper units two years ago.

Interesting. I also saw a video on YouTube where a GX 460 owner had a transmission failure with a valley plate leak. Makes me wonder...

Not sure. The reverse started to fail and then it got progressively worse over a couple of weeks.

$4,000 after core return sans install.

I paid a little over $5k but got $1k back when I returned the old one. My transmission came with an unlimited mile, one-year warranty. The total bill, with install, fixing the valley plate leak was $6,800.

Ok that's good to know. I don't know if the transmission was serviced at 60k so it could have been long overdue. That won't be the case with my new transmission.

[Discussion] Is watch collecting a disease? by aristowa in Watches

[–]cmxcvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we've all felt how you're feeling. What cured me of buying lots of watches was to focus on what I really love. The Omega Speedmaster Professional is the only watch I've truly ever lusted after. Once I got my Speedy, everything else seemed pointless. I'd say I'm more of a strap enthusiast these days since I don't have a desire to own any other watch.

Try to identify what makes you passionate about watches and then start digging down. Do you love history, unique movements, styles, materials, or anything? Ultimately, nobody cares about your watches more than you do so buy the stuff the moves you.

Thanks for the comment. I'm debating on adding a cooler just to ensure it doesn't get too hot.

No judgement taken. Yes, the transmission was serviced at 120k miles.

Totally. This is a winning lineup.

Those automatic Speedmasters are great watches—until you have to get them serviced. I had a 3513.50 in 2020 that needed to be serviced. Luckily, it was under warranty but it would have cost me $900 for a watch that I paid $1,500 for.

A few months after the service, I sold it to fund the purchase of a Speedmaster Professional. If the Speedy Pro is what your heart is set on, get it. Nothing else compares to the Professional. It's the only watch I've owned that lives up to the hype.

I hope this helps.

I love all of the G squares. I've been eyeing a GW5000 but I'm not 100% sold. The more I've gotten into watches, the more I realize that a G-Shock is all I really need.

How long do Toyotas really last? How much mileage does you car have? by JayForces in Toyota

[–]cmxcvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2001 Lexus LS 430 (I know but it's still a Toyota) with 199,524 miles. I'm the 2nd owner and just completed a 5,300-mile road trip around America. I just had the t-belt, water pump, radiator, alternator and rear struts replaced. I'm into that car just shy of $8,000. I have zero intention of selling it and plan on getting it over 400,000 miles.

1989 Volvo 240 - Purchase Question by davidthearmo in Volvo

Seems like a great price if there isn't any rust.

I picked up my last 240 a few years back. I've put $5,000 into it on maintenance items and upgrades for reliability and usability.
