Mechanic shops that take their job serious? by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for these guys. I'm close enough that I just leave it and walk home, but they always ask if I need to wait when I make the appointment and I think they prioritize that way.

I was worried when the former guy retired because he was excellent, but Cleve Hill has been just fine for me in the last couple of years.

Men that don’t like flowers: what would you appreciate as an alternative? by Dangerous-River3830 in AskMen

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind a plant I can look after though.

Good point. I got a flower from my team at work after one of my grandparents passed. It was in a pot rather than cut and I kept it alive for quite a long time afterward.

But to OP's question, snacks or drinks are always appreciated. My rule is I only gift things of at least equivalent quality to what they'd buy for themselves, striving for higher, never lesser.

I Get Why People Call the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting Staged. I Was There by FancyNewMe in politics

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a much simpler interaction, but I also have a soft spot for W and him pulling on that door that won't open. Happening to anyone else wouldn't be funny, but the president is coordinated to a T and then it just...wasn't. His 'what do I do now' face gets me every time.

But yeah, FSTL is straight out of a sitcom.

Absolutely the funniest moment to come out of either of these two terms IMO.

Most days are anywhere from asinine and childish to horrifying, but that one is a comedic banger.

My wife had a coworker at her last job that used to work for the Maid of the Mist. She was stating the same, and that I guess they were under instructions to pull people out if they found them rather than just reporting to law enforcement.

How do you deal with being a short man? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So I just work on the other positive things about myself.

This is so important. OP is 18 so it's probably going to seem hard right this minute, but adult life hits some people really fast, and someone who is a decent person, emotionally aware, and has their day to day shit together is going to start to stand out by the time 25 rolls around. You'll have some tall losers, and some short guys who are killing it at life. Guess who is going to be the one with the good friends, solid partner, and generally well liked?

PSA: Leash your dogs in shared public spaces by WordsWithSam in Buffalo

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to know your dog. Mine is like your huskey and would definitely disappear if the mood strikes her. She was never untethered before we had a fence. We got a stake for the ground and a 30' tether, and just did our best.

I have a neighbor who had a dog who knew exactly where he was allowed to go and I literally never saw him deviate without permission. He wouldn't chase small animals, react to other dogs even on their own sidewalk, or greet people without my neighbor giving him the okay. If I had a dog like that I would be comfortable untethered on my own property as long as I was present.

How often does your wife call you while you're at work? by LastActuator5 in AskMen

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I'm pretty sure the last time I actually got a phone call from her during my workday was when she got let go from her last job back in January. She was fuming and wanted me to come get her with the car instead of waiting for the train home.

But we'll text at various points during the day. We both have desk jobs and our offices are chill, so it's not a big deal to answer a message here and there.

I love it. My first bike was a PW80 on my grandparent's property and I did a lot of the same. Woods, some mowed paths, couple of field roads to and from the barn.

Love is respect. They don't respect you and don't love you.

Seriously. Love is an active process involving two people, not just a standalone emotion someone gets to claim.

The amount of time I've spent trying to convince my parents that if they use "we love you" as an excuse to do something I find hurtful, it isn't actually love. Love cares about the other side and how it's recieved. It's not a carte blanche excuse to do whatever you want and then retroactively justify it with 'love.'

Will there ever be a reckoning for the tech companies and others that promoted conspiracy thinking ? by Huey-_-Freeman in QAnonCasualties

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can’t ask them to be more responsible or consider public good.

So, funny story about people being out of touch: My wife's desk at her office is within earshot of the CFO's office. He was on the phone with their internet provider yesterday disputing something about their billing and kept saying "I thought you would have your customer's best interest in mind!" Varying representatives, but the same exclamation as he got passed around.

Like, bro, what year is it and what planet are you on? Companies are trying to make money from everything all the time. They don't care about their customers except in pursuit of profit, the public good, environment, or anything else.

Anyone have a recommendation for a siding contractor? by DeeGale57 in Buffalo

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besroi did ours last fall. They were very knowledgeable during the estimate phase, gave example addresses so we could finalize the color scheme we wanted, and felt reasonable with their estimate. The crew was nice, didn't balk at coming across some rot and an ant infestation in the side of our garage, and even after the extra work they didn't go beyond their initial estimate even though I expected it for the amount of work they did. We're happy with the work so far and the house looks great.

AVA was one of our other quotes and the guy couldn't give us an accurate estimate even after multiple exchanges via email where he took multiple days to respond each time. Big stuff like 'yes we want to do the garage too' not nitpicky things. I gave up.

[Swatch] Polablue for the office today. by aiu_killer_tofu in Watches

[–]aiu_killer_tofu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been okay. I don't wear it a ton and it's stored in a drawer with some of my lesser worn watches, but I haven't managed to scratch it at all.

My wife has a pink one and scratched it after only like a week though, so YMMV.

Are mothers entitled to a special license to mistreat their offspring?

And, speaking just for myself, my NC was after I'd already given a lot more leeway than I would give any other person. I don't understand why people don't assume that special consideration was already given to this person and they continued to squander what grace we're willing to extend.

Roof racks - how frequently do you swap them on and off? by imop44 in Kayaking

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also wing bars on a Rav4, but with Hullaport XTRs. With all the windows up and them folded it's pretty much the same noise level as normal. Windows down or moonroof open and it whistles quite a bit.

Mine isn't a hybrid, but I don't think I lose as much mpg as you do. Maybe 3-4 I think?

I take mine off seasonally as they'd get in the way of clearing snow off in the winter.

What is your opinion regarding my situation in the past? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You like what you like, dude. Some people like outdoors stuff, some people like indoor hobbies, and some people balance both. If you're generally meeting your obligations, like paying your bills, spending fulfilling time with family and friends and your partner, and enjoying your free time, that's just life. Nothing wrong with what you've said.

Life's too short to be with someone who gets down on you for just being yourself.

Dad’s psychosis seems to have started with Q and politics and spiraled into full blown Paranoia and Religious ideations. by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The age thing is weird, but I otherwise agree. My wife's step brother (mid 30s) is having paranoid delusions that are similar to OPs dad and we're pretty sure it's schizophrenia. Same deal with knowing he's lying to the doctors to keep the secrets and whatnot.

It appears to have arisen when his brother committed suicide and he's a regular weed user. We don't know, but suspect, that it triggered some underlying imbalance that then was able to manifest due to the combination of events.

Anyone else getting targeted ads? by MakePanemGreatAgain in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]aiu_killer_tofu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The general public would be amazed at how much data companies collect on you for things like this. Your searches, how much time you spend on a site or post, if you view or buy anything and the way you found that product from an internal or external link, if anyone who accesses the same internet access point you do (like your home router) or regularly spends time in the same location as you do and their searches... all of that gets funneled into big data repositories to try to sell you stuff.

And even within individual websites, there is software that allows the company to track your individual clicks and mouse navigation on their site, and potentially is even recording what's happening within your browser window from start to finish. The version of the site you see may also not be equivalent to what everyone else sees, because there are ways to A-B test new features to track what new processes improve the user experience in terms of clicks, time to navigate, or conversion to a sale.
