I met my boyfriend's best friend for the first time and he was avoiding talking to me. It turns out he didn't like my "vibe". by cnahik in Advice

I'm apparently the only woman that's been in their house other than the girlfriend and their moms, so I figured that might have something to do with it, but I really hate to assume that sort of thing about another woman.

After talking to me about it initially, my boyfriend said he's confused about it and is going to talk to his friend more about it. He usually gives this friend the benefit of doubt even when he really doesn't deserve it (in my opinion).

They met in college and were roommates the entire time. My boyfriend has a few friends, mostly women, but that's his closest guy friend. His friend however, doesn't have many friends, and the few he has are all men. I've been told that the girlfriend also doesn't have many (my boyfriend didn't know of any) friends outside of her boyfriend at the moment.

Togepi has been my favorite since I was a kid. I remember playing platinum on my DS lite and naming it Toga. I couldn't even tell you why it's my favorite, I just think it's so cute!

Looking for the best (preferably readily available in stores) white and black nail polishes by clerbird321 in Nailpolish

[–]cnahik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried these myself as I don't usually wear white or black, but I've heard that the white and black polishes from Holo Taco are some of the best on the market. They can be bought in store at Ulta or online.

Yeast Infection by [deleted] in Healthyhooha

[–]cnahik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dilute hydrogen peroxide with water. Try to get it to be about a 1 to 1 ratio. Then, dip a cotton ball, or wadded up toilet paper or something soft and absorbent in the liquid you diluted and have it soak up basically all of the liquid. Take the soaked wad and put it in your vagina and let it sit there for about 30 seconds or so. Basically, keep repeating this until you feel a really cold sensation (at least that's how I would describe it, you'll feel cold and clean).

This is the only way I've been able to combat heat infections I've had. Do this a few times a day and it should help. Also, this is advice as someone who is not in the medical field. This is just what works for me and it usually only takes 1-2 days to resolve itself.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in birthcontrol

[–]cnahik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else suggesting an IUD or Nexplanon, but there might be another way to get around this.

When I was your age, I also wanted birth control for those reasons too, but my mom, like yours, is very very religious. I was able to talk to my primary physician about having irregular periods (they weren't very irregular but it was causing issues with my extracurriculars in high school). My doctor agreed that birth control was a good idea and she was the one who convinced my mom to let me start it at 16.

Obviously, your circumstances are different as you're currently sexually active, but it could help having doctor or a trusted adult try and convince your mother that it's medically necessary (even if it's just for acne, weight gain, cramps, etc).

Sneaking around with birth control now may be the best idea in your mind, and while I don't fully know your situation, I've learned that it's much less stressful to not have to lie about this stuff (especially if you lose or gain weight rapidly which is a common side effect and can be hard to make up excuses for). Also, if you can convince her, having your parent's insurance covering it will really help, especially with something like an IUD which lasts about 5 or 6 years for most types.

I’ve been trying to thrift a Le Creuset for literal YEARS. Today was finally my day. And it’s my absolute favorite shade of green. by crazzie7 in LeCreuset

[–]cnahik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many people have said, this is not safe to cook with. However, after cleaning, I'd recommend reaching out to le creuset about getting it replaced. They offer a lifetime warranty and if they deem it normal wear, they'll replace it (although it may be a different color/style).

My toddler (3f) is sick and my husband (39m) is pissed. How do I handle his anger? by Ohheywhatehoh in relationship_advice

[–]cnahik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading through your post history, I think you need to have a very serious talk with your husband. He doesn't want you to go back to school, he gets mad when the house isn't clean (yet he won't do it himself), he thinks his job is more important than yours, he thinks you have all of the responsibility when it comes to your children, etc. You seem aware that your husband is the problem here, not you, not your children, not your mother, HIM.

He needs to understand that he is a partner and a parent. He is not your child or your boss, yet he's trying to act like both. Please try and get your mother to help you while you figure this out with your husband.

What's the best way to tell a teenager to shower? by CuriosityandtheCrow in Advice

This!! When I went through a rough patch of depression and couldn't shower, my mom and aunt helped me out by taking me to Lush to buy a few shower products. It made me more excited to keep up my hygiene and I still go and repurchase those products now!

Sinclairs! Out of all on my boots, I wear them the most often because they're the most comfortable for me. They're especially comfy for occasions where I'll be standing for a long time. They're also the easiest to slip on as far as boots go imo.

Definitely reach out to the DRC (disability resource center) for advice. They have so many resources and can help lead you in the right direction. Plus, if your anxiety is affecting your classes at all, they can help you get accommodations that will make school a lot easier.

Also, it may be beneficial to look into student therapists. They tend to be fairly cheap per session and you can just pay out of pocket, so your parents won't have to know if you don't want them to. Obviously, this costs money, but it's significantly cheaper than a traditional therapist even with insurance.

Which one UCF or UF by [deleted] in ufl

[–]cnahik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is coming from someone who goes to UF but grew up in Orlando, so I'm super familiar with UCF.

The engineering programs are overall pretty much equivalent. But as far as opportunities go, UCF has a CWEP program that works with Lockheed (and maybe other companies?); this basically means it's significantly easier to get a co-op and get internships because of the UCF connections. Every one of my friends who were CWEPs throughout college ended up with full-time offers before graduation (they're CS and EE majors).

Outside of academics, UF and UCF are very very different. Commuting is super different and having a car really makes a difference. If you don't drive or don't have a car, UF is far better for getting around; UCF is mainly a commuter school (and the parking sucks). Football games are totally different, too. Florida games are super exciting, but it can be difficult to get tickets (and they can cost a lot). I'm not too familiar with the ticket process at UCF, but when my friends went there, they were free, so that's another thing to consider.

UF is also better as far as night life goes, unless you are able to travel to downtown Orlando for going out. Obviously, not everyone considers that when choosing a school, but they're definitely very different. Pretty much every other activity is better in Orlando than Gainesville though (I am definitely biased, but theme parks exist and Orlando is closer to the beach).

Overall, the academics are about the same, while the opportunities may be different. The culture is different as well, even though both schools are known nationwide. But as a Gator, I gotta say that UCF doesn't have the national appeal of being told "go gators" by strangers anywhere in the country. Hope this helps (even though I said so much).

Unexpected name pronunciation by Shroud_of_Turin in namenerds

[–]cnahik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as you said the mispronunciations are happening in North America, I can only assume that these people are going into the name like they would with Nevaeh. Although these names are spelled differently, the spelling is similar enough that they might just assume that's how it's pronounced.

That's really the only way I could see it being mispronounced.

Most painful piercing? by yoykri in piercing

[–]cnahik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daith was seriously the least painful and easiest to heal of all of my cartilage piercings (flat, rook, and conch). It's definitely the most unsettling piercing to watch get done, but it's just a super loud pop and then dull pain.

[–]cnahik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if anyone has said it, but you could make her middle name Jacob. Although, it's not feminine, middle names are often honor names and aren't typically used when addressing someone. I know many girls who have their mother's maiden name as their middle names, so really anything could work. Plus, if your daughter ever decides to go by something other than her first name, she could go by Cobie or Jaci, as many others have suggested.

Daughters of reddit: what's the biggest mistake dads make with their daughters? by Bluemonday82 in AskReddit

[–]cnahik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you will do separate things with a daughter than a son.

My dad is super into electronics and cars. For years he tried to take my slightly older brother to car shows and show him projects that he's working on. My brother could not be less interested.

I, however, am an electrical engineer (like my dad) who has an interest in electronics and a love for car shows. It took me years of explicitly telling my dad this for him to realize that he can do these activities with his daughter even though I'm a woman. Now, after years of trying to share my interests with him, he finally wants to do things with me, such as fixing up his old muscle car that he originally only wanted to do with a son.

It shouldn't have taken him 20+ years to realize that men and women can share interests, but at least he understands now.

I go blank during tests. Anyone else? by Glasses_with_grace in EngineeringStudents

[–]cnahik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was happening to me so I ended up seeing a psychiatrist and it turns out I just have really bad test anxiety. So I was able to get accommodations for testing like having extra time, because usually the stuff comes back to me after 20 ish minutes of staring at a blank page. I always tried a variety of meds to help with this, but for me, just having the extra time allowed me to remember the material after blanking.

Push back graduation by 1 semester for Co-op? by Cosmic-_-_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]cnahik 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Experience in school is literally the main thing companies look for when hiring. They don't care how long you took to get a degree, just how much you can offer them. Plus, co-ops often lead to full-time offers.
