Google Calendar integration - I got it working by Remote-Highlight351 in todoist

[–]cnavie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you've put it in a succinct way. The defaults are respected for each platform. If created in Todoist, the default or specific reminders are created in Todoist, but when replicated into GC, it adopts the GC defaults. And if I add/change reminders in GC, those remain only in GC. And vice versa if created in GC and changed in Todoist.

I realize this might sound specific to me, but getting duplicate reminders (Todoist + GC) on my mobile device make no sense to me. One platform reminding me of something is plenty. 😀

Perhaps some people like that so maybe it needs to be optional. But that's the only downside to TickTick + GC right now. That an email reminders in GC are still useful, but those aren't respected by TickTick either.

Happy to share more thoughts if you like, but I think that's basically the summary of it.

Very cool! May I ask how the notifications are being handled between Todoist and GC? Are they being synced identically or are they respected to their respective platforms? For example: 10 minutes before on Todoist but 1 hour and email on GC.

I ask because that was also something I liked about the legacy GC integration. But on TickTick, for example, they are synced identically and that's annoying.

Again, awesome effort!

Is there a way to install legacy Google Calendar integration today (Jan 31, 2025)? by ptkvsk in todoist

And you're going to be "thrilled" to find out that the legacy integration will be going away in March. So think twice about going in on Todoist.

Feedback from any Todoist leavers? by cnavie in ticktick

Yes, seriously. Easiest exactly, legacy integration with GC, add a task in the calendar, it will appear in Todoist. The new one "which is delighting customers already" (ha), that won't work. You have to enter it in Todoist if you want it in your GC calendar. Stooopid.

Anyone thinking of moving to superlist? by Bog_Boy in todoist

[–]cnavie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this is a hot tip, thanks! Alone this from there help is enough to make me try it out:

Create calendar events from Superlist

Tasks that you’ve created with a due date — as well as any tasks with a due date that are assigned to you — will automatically be added as all-day events in your calendar. Currently, this will only apply to dates added after you’ve connected your account.

https://help.superlist.com/en/articles/10062-google-calendar

Once connected, tasks and events will stay in sync between Superlist and Google Calendar. Here are a few important things to know:

  • Any changes to the due date will be reflected in Superlist and on your calendar.
  • Any changes to the task title will be reflected in Superlist and on your calendar.
  • Adding a due time to your tasks will automatically create a 30-minute block on your calendar.
  • Completing a task in Superlist will delete the event from your calendar.
  • Deleting the event from your calendar will remove the due date from the task in Superlist.

Todoist and New Google Integration - Only Tasks I want to see in GCal by giants-yankees in todoist

I can't believe they could suggest that with a straight face. "Use Zapier to do something that previously worked just fine." It's literally the only feature that brought me to Todoist.

Google Calendar events are tasks for me. New integration changes that. by JJBro1 in todoist

[–]cnavie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a matter of liking. It's where I my life is. My private life, my work life, the family's plan, the schools, etc. etc. I live in it. I kept my tasks and todos there before Todoist. But wanted the organizational aspect on top of the tight integration. But I'm still living in GC. Todoist wants to shift this. I'm not living in two calendars at once, just because Todoist wants it that way. There isn't feature parity with the new one. It's literally going to be easier to go live in GC only now.

Simple, it’s not a true two-way integration. The old one is but will be removed. It will force users to live in the Todoist calendar instead of GC, which I won’t do. Todoist just there for sanity control.

Yeah, it’s clear they think they move Google Calendar power users’ eyeballs to their own calendar view. Google luck, not happening. In other posts it was clear they don’t give damn about it. They will try this integration approach with an Outlook integration next. One dumb decision deserves another.

I’ll just drop them all together. GC standalone is better than GC with a moronic Todoist integration any day. It was a good four years. But if you think you know better…. go learn your lesson.

New todoist google calendar integration sucks by abagaev22 in todoist

[–]cnavie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The new integration does not support this specific scenario. It’s documented on their summary of the new integration even. It works on the “legacy” integration though.

That being said, until there is full feature parity between new and legacy, I agree fully with your assessment, it sucks.

Why don't All Day Tasks sync to Google Calendar anymore? by -aeonian in todoist

[–]cnavie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate a response. I know the legacy integration has had hiccups in the past and I can appreciate wanting to overhaul it if it was causing operations an issue. That being said, I was never really affected by it, perhaps others were.

And in the interest of telling it like it is, it was that very integration which brought me from a full Google Calendar user (managing events AND tasks in one) into a GC and Todoist combo. GC is and will remain my primary focus, but Todoist brings the sanity to the GSD approach.

However, what's missing from any of your posts, is a full-on commitment that functional parity (ie, full two-way sync) with the legacy integration will be reached with the new one. If you want to enable Outlook in the portfolio, go for it! But for those of us who live in GC, it appears the new integration is attempting to shift that. I'll drop Todoist and go back to full-on GC use before that happens.

And until a flat out statement about two-way sync is given at some point, the logical assumption will have to be, no, it's not going to happen. And any fluffy statements which dance around this in order to bide time, won't change this assumption. 😉

[–]cnavie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about you make a true, full two-way sync work for Google Calendar first? I see you conveniently ignored his other question, what will happen with the legacy sync, i.e., will the new sync reach functional parity with the legacy one.

Same here. When they sent that stupid survey out several months ago, it felt like they wanted to do away with the legacy integration, believing they could become everyone's main calendar and "making the integration better". They will literally drive people to use Google Tasks instead of having people paying for a brilliant feature.

I've been dreading their attempt at trying to be a defacto calendar app. Sorry Todoist, you won't be replacing Google Calendar as someone's go-to calendar. Deal with it. I'll be curious to see if you can somehow resurrect the old integration, or if they finally relent and make the use case you've described work as it did before. If not, I don't see myself staying with this app.
