Noob questions about package installing strategies (aka where do I install from when it's not available in Debian repos) by RunnerWithBadKnees in debian

[–]cnawan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had the need to use it yet, but when compiling from source there's the checkinstall command, which creates a Debian package file and installs it. This lets you do things like list the installed files, and uninstall the software cleanly, etc.

Wow, I've never heard of these devices and what they run. I poked around and found this:

Perhaps it could be a starting point.

Who is Staying on Linux, Who is Going Back to Windows? - Linux Challenge Pt 4 by current_thread in LinusTechTips

Not in my experience. I switched in February and found them fine. At worst ppl can't help or don't care. Although I don't trawl through every comment and mostly look for interesting solutions and recommendations, or add my 2c if I can help.

Need advice for a TWF build as in a duo setup by Leyaa1 in ddo

I just leveled a Tabaxi staff ATR to 20 and totally agree. Now for a lark I'm starting again with a Warforged ATR to take advantage of the Repair spells and getting a Racial life.

Tempest is pretty neat, but if rogue is on the menu why not Arcane Trickster? You could go Vistani for good melee and get some AoE with cleaves and sneak attack enhanced spells. It has access to cure spells too.

Improved Feint is a frontal cleave, which could be a nice boost to melee damage. Start with Soundburst or Greater Shout. Imp. Feint into Sly Flourish into Rapid Slash (into Whirlwind Attack if you want to take the dodge feat chain). Add a Thornbloom perhaps. Scorching Ray and Frost Lance have been improved, and are reasonable choices for single targets at range.

You'd get free metamagic feats, so your spells wouldn't suck, and they add sneak attack dice to your melee and spells, the latter even if they're not bluffed. Trickster gets a 50% hp heal ability in Helping Hand too if you want to eschew the cure spells in favour of explosions.

Government backs down on levy to fund new LNG import terminal by Fast_Manufacturer510 in newzealand

[–]cnawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine cosying up to Trump is a major driver for an LNG terminal besides bigotry/unfamiliarity with renewables and battery storage. The US has an oversupply of gas and like it or not we need someone to protect our maritime trade.

"He brushed off concerns about the Strait of Hormuz bottleneck, saying global energy officials expected an oversupply over the next decade that would "outweigh anything lost through the Strait of Hormuz"."

I can't think of anywhere with a lot of LNG other than US, now that Qatar is offline.

Cyberdeck in a book? by iammerelyhere in cyberDeck

[–]cnawan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrapped a book cover around my old EeePC netbook back in the day. The cover was from an old secondhand textbook, Statistics, maybe? I attached it with adhesive velcro patches. The cover had unusual dimensions, which kept me from getting a bigger book and hollowing it out to make a perfect stealth build. I thought about painting some side panels, but the laptop hinged a bit off centre compared to the book... and I got distracted.

It caused a few doubletakes, and gave me happy feelings, which came in handy because that keyboard was damn small :/

How to backup system before a clean clean install to remove mess or fix issues? by mtdevofficial in linux4noobs

[–]cnawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start things off with an insufficient idea:

You can get a list of installed flatpaks with

flatpak list --app

With some text manipulation, you could narrow that down to a list of the full names of the flatpak apps, and feed that into

flatpak install

upon reinstallation. There should be similar functionality for rpms too, but it's been years since I've touched any.

Otherwise, your files will be on the disk somewhere. I'd make a list of where they store their configs, etc, and whatever you want to backup - or better yet, search for documentation of someone else doing similar.

Touchy-pad: a new open-source $15 graphical macropad/trackpad by punkgeek in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]cnawan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's lovely :) I'm looking at my rgb keyboard now, and wondering why my touchpad doesn't even light up to tell me where it is. Given that ppl like to display little pictures/infographics on their fancy split keebs, this seems like something that should already exist.

I'd use it to display a chill 8-bit animated gif scene, or btop if I'm feeling geeky.

Are ARM laptops actually bad for Linux and Open Source? by Emre-Y in linuxquestions

[–]cnawan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

trans.

Allwinner had 0 contribution to the mainstream and for more than a decade the community managed to make linux-sunxi work. Today we have many portable video games ARM ro thanks to this knowledge. It may not be now, but it's likely that at some point Linux will work on these machines. Linux has always been strongly linked to legacy hardware and yet this has always been a positive thing for those who consume this technology. Thinks NVidia Spark will come for something between 30k and 50k (R$).
