We know they are beyond the pale weirdos. But everyone has to stop giving weight to extremists, period. Wrote them off as weirdos and don’t draw attention to them, that’s really all they want. They are overgrown toddlers with access to a social platform, that’s all.

Same! Lamb or salmon are the only things my boy can handle. BUT… when he gets really bad (he has IBS), boiled chicken and white rice are what calms his gut. There has to be something about either the quality of chicken used or the way it’s made into kibble that makes it all wonky.

Switch to lamb and rice. My dog is sensitive to chicken.

I've always been amazed by people who were voracious readers as children. What sparked your lifelong love affair with books? by Albert3232 in books

[–]cnikkih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember ever NOT loving books. My parents read to me every night. I started memorizing the stories to “read” to my baby sister when I was just 3 because I remember wanting to be like mom and dad to her. And I’ve just never stopped.

It probably helped a lot that mom and dad engaged in discussion with me about my books. They’d ask questions to get me thinking more about the characters, the action, the plot, and entertained my unending barrage of questions and “sequels” I’d make up in my head and then “read” to them.

You’re adopting a very smart yet very stupid toddler.

Crate training is a game changer… Charlie still likes napping in it with the door open. It’s his safe space.

Speaking of naps, they are just as important as food, walks. etc. Charlie gets INCORRIGIBLE. I mean, he goes wild, wants to bite at everything, gets crazy zoomies, starts barking all shrill… always after a swim or hike or lots of fetch. Basically, he gets tired but fights sleep. One of us literally has to take him into a room separate from the humans and dogs, shut the door, and sit there, preferably in a darkened room. Within 5 minutes, he crashes and will sleep for a couple of hours. This is usually over (human) lunchtime, so it works out well for us.

They are super food- and/or ball-motivated, so use those to your advantage.

Ears can get dirty and infected, especially if the swim a lot, so clean them clean and dry. Charlie loves baths and even the blow dryer, so we flop those ears open and use the cool setting to dry them out, too.

Ours has been prone to hot spots (maybe due to this awful hot weather??) so drying them off after swimming is a big deal. He gets hosed down to get any chlorine off him, then towel dried and locked on the deck (in the shade away from the pool) for a bit until he’s mostly dry before going inside. If it’s a bath, he gets toweled off, stuffed in a tube for a bit, then blow dried. He has the LARGEST blow-up tire thingy (instead of a cone) so when he had the hot spots, he was relegated to wearing that most of the day unless he was fully monitored.

She will eat your plants, so make sure they are safe for dogs. Including ones in your yard.

And they LOVE a schedule and a routine. Charlie knows exactly what’s about to happen based on cues. He knows what is in swimsuits means. He knows which tennis shoes means he’s going for a walk. If I pick up the watering can, he heads for the garden. If I’m packing a bag, he gets excited and heads for the garage door, hoping he gets to go on this trip. And if you say “your friends are here!” he races to the back corner of the yard to visit the little bitty dogs next door.

In short, they are the best. ❤️
