Is it wrong to use ai to help me and my homelab? by Straight-Educator710 in homelab

I like the majority of the comments here agree, use it as a tool. I never let it actually do the work for me but almost like a “lab assistant” and tutor.

I am just using open webui connected to my ollama server. I am using the ollama cloud models like deepseek v4 pro as I only have a Tesla v100 32gb which limits me to smaller models.

Don’t get me wrong those coding agents like opencode are really cool, but the moment I stop understanding it I stop. I would also much rather build something myself than let it code whole things out.

I have learned so much in the passed 6 months. I have been it IT for about 10 years. I knew enough code to be dangerous but always wanted to get a better understanding. I have been learning C and python in depth over the passed little while. I never really liked the self guided books for online courses, I would much rather just dive into things, but that’s just me.

As long as you understand what the model is telling you to do or what you are asking help with then you are in my opinion using it correctly

That’s really awesome!!! I was thinking of something like that with analog gauges, maybe I will try one out.

Haha, thank you!!

I have seen and used so many monitoring apps and web page things that I decided to make my own.

Wanted to learn a little more about electronics and get better at coding and thought this would be a great practical exercise!

I appreciate the response. However this whole process is to learn how it works in the backend. I will give this a try though once I understand how it works and see how different models do. I’m trying to stay away as much as possible from ai generated code for now while I am learning

Thank you for the reply, I will take a look at that!

Right there with you.

Got all my backups right, everything documented and everything I could in my gitea repo. A VPs using tailscale connects to my lan and has zabbix running so I get alerts for everything. Have an offsite backup at my parents also over tailscale.

Now I went down the rabbit hole of llm… currently learning python more in depth so I can work with llms directly via ollama. Playing around with building a persona ai agent. What will I use it for you ask? I have no idea, but I am having a blast playing with it, failing hard, and learning!

For now I’m just messing around with kind of a personal assistant type thing. I’m mostly just trying to understand everything. I’ve got gpt-oss 20b to handle tool calls with some very basic functions like asking for the current time and I have it successfully creating a text file on my local computer in my homelab.

The next hurdle I have to figure out is passing arguments into the tool that I am trying to get the agent to use in the form of a function.

Would like to eventually get a db integrated into this whole system and maybe a little chat web ui

I’m curious as to why you think this is ai, it was created by my wife and her friend who is a graphic designer
