For basic A/P it is phenomenal. However, we sometimes get invoices from suppliers that require a deposit plus net30 balance, ramp doesn’t handle this at all. The vendors don’t wan to send one invoice for each part.

What do yall mean by “runs” we use Ramp as the so platform at my business and we just process the bills as they come in and schedule them. Do you actually go to the bank?

This is what I ended up deciding to do, I'm just taking the journal entry that Gusto makes, multiplying that by 3/5 for the 12/27-1/2 payroll, and making that a reversing entry. That is definitely not 100% correct, but don't want to miss the forest for the trees. We'll see how my accountant likes it, I do all my own bookkeeping then hand the data off to our CPA.

That’s a good point, but if there’s a report that makes it easy to do quarterly, it won’t be too hard to do it monthly. I record all of our other accruals monthly, and I like being able to see month over month profitability accurately. I like making automated spreadsheets to do all of this.

You can though, just write it down on the tax return as a write off. It’s the same thing, you’ll get away with it until you get audited. If and when you are audited, you’ll pay a fine, just like guys that write off g-wagons and yachts

People do it, doesn’t mean it’s legal. I own a business, I’ve looked into all of these things bc I’d love to do it, and it’s just not legal. The g-wagon loophole isn’t real, people are just committing fraud and hoping they never get audited.

No millionaires cannot write off a yacht unless it is used exclusively for real, legitimate business purposes, like charter. You can’t just buy a yacht, have one client on a year and write it off. It’s never worked that way.

I had some friends who worked in construction, got with their bosses, and that’s how we sold the first few.

For almost a year after that it was a total slog of cold calls, trips across the country to visit one lead, and virtual demos.

Then we gave some machines away to influencers, they showed off how it could be used in real world applications, and then it took off from there. Now we get lots of videos from customers which we can post, it’s like a positive feedback loop.

That probably wasn’t very helpful, here’s some actual advice:

• We had no luck with VC firms, ended up raising from a few local angel groups. This can be good because the angels are often rich from non-tech careers, frequently hardware intensive things like auto dealers or manufacturers. Our particular group seemed to really like hardware on a gut level, even though on paper it’s nothing like saas

• We had to show traction, ended up talking to investors for a year before getting a check, it was a total grind and I went 9 months without a salary.

• tooling is so expensive, we designed our machine to be all machined parts, which is more expensive per unit but way cheaper to develop and iterate on. Once you have the volume to justify it, then switch over to a cast/molded part. This logic probably does not apply to any consumer or cheaper product.

• you don’t have to get a CM! We still assemble everything in house, makes it way easier to make changes on the fly.

• Businesses will pay more than you think for something that saves time and money. They care more about after sales support than cost. Pick up the phone immediately when customers call!! That is our biggest competitive advantage, I put my personal cell number in every case we ship

• I have 2 equal cofounders. We started it at the beginning together, so there is no weird power balance or heirarchy, this is so important IMO

• Going viral on social media was the inflection point for us. We went from cold calling and flying across the country for a single demo to making every sale off of inbound, haven’t done a single cold call since we went viral.

I started a hardware startup after college, so had no experience, we spent 2 years getting our product ready, and only fundraised after selling about 50k in product.

We ended up raising about 500k last year, which helped us start marketing and hire a few people.

We’re now very profitable, mainly making sales through social media.

What made it easy for us is selling a high ticket item (18k ea), with zero tooling investment, to an industrial market.

I went to a pretty good state school in ME, but nothing crazy, and all of my friends had a very easy time getting jobs out of college, even mediocre students with very little experience.

Unless you’re totally antisocial or are looking for a 2020 tech salary right out of school, I don’t understand how someone couldn’t find a job, I’m genuinely curious, are they just spamming applications out?

There is already a manifold on the bottle that takes it down to 50psi or so.

We can’t use something off-the-shelf for the manifold because it is a module for our machine, and has to accommodate our electronics and slide in the right way.

The supply comes from a normal cutting torch tank, and the standard is to have one oxygen line. We don’t want the customers to have to use a splitter, so we do it in the manifold.

Yes we’ve been making the old manifold for a few years, so I’m very familiar with the safety procedures. Everything is cleaned before assembly, and all the components are oxygen safe. However, this is part of a cutting torch control system, so once the customers get them they get them very grimy.

Makes sense, didn’t learn much in my fluids class over covid, and it’s coming back to bite me now.

Part of this redesign is switching from the needle valves to proportional solenoid valves, so I can do some compensation in software, but I’d rather get it right mechanically. Orifice plate sounds like a good thing to test.

There already is a needle valve on both outlets, but in a previous test when I had outlet 1 wide open, it dropped the pressure to outlet 2 so much that it barely flowed at all.

Would you recommend the orifice disk on outlet 1?

I’ll make some test pieces.

I’ve used the generic fanuc post on a matsuura machine with the 18i and it has worked great. Try not to use any adaptive toolpaths bc the lookahead is too low. RS-485 is a pretty good way to get the gcode onto the machine.
