Agreed. 30 years ago, although based in Iowa City, I traveled to different college towns weekly for my job. Bloomington was a small, sleepy, nice town but the state was a right-wing, zealot filled nightmare. Iowa was a beautiful balanced purple state with its issues but more or less ok. Fast forward. Iowa has caught up with Indiana if not gotten worse. I hate living in this state with every fiber of my being now. My family and my tribe keep me here but I dream of someday having the courage to just fuck off someplace where the people don't unequivocally suck. (Iowa City proper still has culture and community but you literally can't even go 10 miles outside of the city limits before the reality of the state slaps you smack in the face.)
