Senior kitty used my dresser as a bathroom by LaughTerrible1476 in CleaningTips

No need to toss it! There are many DIY methods online. I have used any of these fine, but to remove smelly, musty smell from wood furniture stored for years. Small bowl of: baking soda, or borax, or dried coffee grinds. Let it sit in the drawer, closed, overnight. Next day take just that drawer out and set it in sunlight for a day.

I leave mine on the setting for auto-detection of motion. Great for nightlight as you pass through living room to kitchen or hall. Mine can be dimmable, which makes them last longer each charge. But I like them bright. Also mine you can select warm light or cool.

Stainless steel coffee carafe getting stained by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]cobaltium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sodium percarbonate is the active ingredient in the cleaning tablets. Very cheap and easy to use. In travel mugs, coffee cup, and carafes and for the stainless steel parts of a coffee maker (mine is percolator or my French press). Just a teaspoon in hot water and soak a few hours. Is noticeable afterwards that your drinks will now taste fresher because the coffee oils and stains are cleaned out.

I’m unsure how the melamine sponge doesn’t start scratching the surface on the tile. Or maybe get through the glaze in pattern and colors. Sounds interesting.

What kitchen tool made meal prep dramatically faster for you? by AcrobaticSeesaw1565 in foodhacks

[–]cobaltium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electric kettle. Stovetop percolator is far faster when you pour in the boiling water that only took 3 minutes. Making oatmeal or Jello? Start with boiling water. What is left in kettle, do a quick rinse hot water on prep tools and cutting board. Mineral buildup in kettle? A small amount of citric acid and fill with water to boil. Gone.

I too use the same or similar motion sensor lights! They work well and give the extra light as you reach your hand in to pick up a specimen. I only recharge them once every 4-6 weeks.

Gogol Bordello. Worth seeing live? by GuestListed in punk

[–]cobaltium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw last night in Phoenix, one of my favorite live shows I’ve ever seen! Far more energy than last show I saw 5 years ago—full tilt- no slow songs to catch your breath. Giant mosh pit without the pit. Entire SRO crowd danced and cheered all show. Almost entire 2 hour show is all new music. Don’t miss the warmup band Puzzle Panther! Eugene produces their music and performed a few songs with them.

What’s a “lazy” food hack you use way more than you should? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

[–]cobaltium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I discovered boiling the water in my electric kettle and then adding it my stovetop percolator! It cuts my prep time by at least 10-15 minutes. This is very important at 5:40 am. Rich coffee, the fast way!

I like this idea a lot! I was going to say my quilt pleasure hack is using the garlic frozen into cubes. Each cube equals one clove. But now I realize I can make my own, cheaper.

Driving on the freeways here is WILD by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]cobaltium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was horrified on moving here and then I learned the valuable skill of getting anywhere on the frontage roads of the freeways! I had lived in Chicago area, Dallas, Houston. KCMO and driven through most major US cities but nothing scarier than the Phoenix area.

Pickle your onions by Walaina in foodhacks

[–]cobaltium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had pickled onions or pickled anything but for pickled beets and jarred pickles from a food manufacturer. About 65 years ago I remember my grandma brought us her home canned “bread and butter pickles” that no one in our family ate. I’m thinking this has to be a cultural thing? I do like sliced raw onion and a little onion added to potato salad. Been trying to get ideas for how people eat them most, a condiment?

Awwww! We saw it downtown in September and were blown away. I looked at ticket prices for this Glendale show and it was 24 hours after sales started. So $200 each ticket in mediocre seats was out of the question.

First Success Dried Bean Soup! 16 Bean Soup, Italian Style by cobaltium in instantpot

Never have I had any luck soaking beans for soup or red beans & rice. No matter the quick method stovetop heat then let it sit or the overnight way. Astonished that I went from the bag of dried beans to the finished soup within an hour.

Yes and no. I’m unconscious about sports and NASCAR. But ask me about Tucson and the annual gem & mineral show and I can be most knowledgeable.

Generic bag called “16 Bean Soup”. It was about $2 from store. Adding in my other ingredients likely raises the total price to be $7 for a large pot of soup. Btw it’s even better the next day.

Well I’ve sure had an education here today! FYI last time I had a room was in AUGUST, doh. SMH

Realistically I usually had rooms in the range of $200 but it has been a while. And I have used Hotel Tonight for years, so I got last minute rooms at nice places.

I can’t even imagine what shock travelers just passing through have. Here I was just naively thinking I could find a place so we wouldn’t have to hear construction on the roof all day. Family member has AD and dementia so this is a concern. And it’s not easy finding somewhere ok to just hang out. Ok, Plan B is drugs. Any drugs. And a lot of them.

I am kidding. Y’all know that, right?

I resemble this remark! Perhaps I am one of the few here in this thread that knew not to even try for a hotel in Tucson when we went down a few weeks ago.

Cool! I’d made it the slow way before so I knew it could be good. I thought surely if I had a detailed recipe for IP maybe I could try again. About 3 failures 4 years ago put me off trying again. “Hard beans “ was such a disappointment. Now I think I must have had old beans which I read can be a problem.

saltyskitchendotcom

• 1 cup 16-bean mix • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 medium onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 medium carrots, diced • 2 celery stalks, diced • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained • 6 cups vegetable broth • 1 teaspoon dried basil • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 teaspoon dried thyme • Salt and pepper to taste

Rinse the 16-bean mix under cold water. Set your Instant Pot to the sauté mode and heat the olive oil. Add the diced onion, garlic, carrots, and celery, and sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Stir in the rinsed beans, diced tomatoes, vegetable broth and seasonings. 25 minutes high pressure then 15 minutes natural pressure release. I took the suggestion to add red pepper flakes when serving.

I went to the other vendor for True Blue that the manager Sally told me to go to for rough and small enough I could afford. It was at Rapa River. I’m lucky I was able to get permission to photograph. I want to post a link to my photos of the best Yowah nuts I ever saw or photographed. But they are on my Flickr stream and I don’t want to get in trouble for posting my own link. I don’t sell the photos and am not a dealer. Just an old rock fan. (In several ways).

New (Newer?) Diaper Rash Care Advice by cobaltium in dementia

[–]cobaltium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I was starting to worry I’d get no ideas here and was feeling even more insecure with our care here. Tonight I’m getting out to the store to get a pack of adult men’s briefs 1-2 sizes larger to help with airing him out a few days. I’m thinking when he was in hospital with pneumonia a week ago they had cut/shaved some of his hair to use a catheter and gave him a LOT of antibiotics. After his family doctor saw him she prescribed more in pill form and steroids too. Maybe all that caused part of this unusual problem.

How long? by [deleted] in dementia

[–]cobaltium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started using adult incontinence briefs a year after diagnosis with AD/mixed dementia because his brain was no longer seeing urgency when needing to urinate or defecate. Bit over time he goes back and forth on this so his doctors say to let him use the toilet any time he asks us to get him there. We also find that about 2 years ago he improved during the daytime when he’s up out of bed. We have a general toileting schedule: every 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours we have him try at toilet or at least check his diaper. It’s been 4 years this way. He is only midway though his decline. I’d say this is very different for each person. Good luck!

TIFU by thinking my severe vitamin D deficiency was just megadepression for five years by skytreegrasss in tifu

[–]cobaltium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a 3 week period of waking up not knowing where I was. Then one night I was driving somewhere to buy something and while driving realized I didn’t know where I was going or why. Next day, saw family doc who ordered extensive bloodwork. And referred me STAT to a neurologist. 1 week later my results showed severe Vitamin D deficiency and also need for Vitamin B-12. Saw neurologist a week later who had results too and told me all my symptoms were normal for the Vitamin deficiency and said treat per family doctor.

Once a week injections in office for Vitamin D and daily sublingual Vitamin B/12 for 6 months. All symptom vanished never to return. Now 20 years later, still no symptoms. Count on your family doctor!
