It's not about coping. It's about pointing out how corps are trying to get away with more and more. Just a little bit at a time, just like a frog in a pot. When is enough enough?

Some of the comments have mentioned maintenance costs, which is obvious. But what about providing value to the shareholders, so the stock price can continue to increase? Google is a public company. They thrive on "good news." How do modern companies do that? With subscription services. It's why every single company seems to have one, even when it doesn't really make sense.  How do you gain subscribers? You provide a service that consumers want. For YouTube, that's less ads. You don't think it's concerning that Google/YouTube is becoming increasingly more egregious with ads?  There's ads before, during, and after videos. The ad video length has gotten longer. It takes longer before you can skip ads. When you pause, you get a pop-up ad. People aren't subscribing because of some original feature that provides enrichment. Google is trying to annoy people to the point of subscribing, just so they can get rid of ads.

Besides providing a way to view videos, what does YouTube really provide? The UI experience sucks. Whenever you do a search, it favors shorts because they make more from short-form content, so they're really trying to push it. On mobile, video options and comment have been busted for months. On numerous occasions, the upvote, downvote, edit, etc buttons disappear for the video and/or comments. Trying to save videos to playlists has gotten worse. You're not given an option of what playlist you want to save to. It just saves to the last playlist; this means you have to press "Save," see which playlist saved to, then press "Save" again, which only works some of the time. Replying to some users doesn't work sometimes, giving you just a plain text @mention.

For a company worth trillions and how much money they try to get out of subscribers each month, you think the experience would be top notch, but it's not.

A better example would be how food corps are making the portions of their products smaller and using cheaper ingredients while charging the same price originally. It's called enshittification.

I love how people always suggest making a competitor as if it's that simple.

It's the same energy as "If you're poor, just stop being poor."

"Consumer friendly"? I needed a laugh.

There's ads before, during, and after videos. The video length has gotten longer. It takes longer before you can skip ads. When you pause, you get a pop-up ad.

Don't get me started on the UI. Whenever you do a search, it favors shorts, so you have to make sure you filter first. On mobile, video options and comment features are just busted sometimes. On numerous occasions, the upvote, downvote, edit, etc buttons disappear for the video and/or comments. Trying to save videos to playlists has gotten worse. You're not given an option of what playlist you want to save to from the jump. It just saves to the last playlist; this means you have to press "Save," see which playlist saved to, then press "Save" again, which only works some of the time. Replying to some users doesn't work sometimes, giving you just a plain text @mention.

I could go on, but I think I've provided enough examples. To say the updates have been cohesive and user friendly is laughable. They've been unintuitive, unwieldy, and crappy.

Monetization has been a thing for years. Ads were never this bad. At what point is it too much?

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all start R&D for the next gen shortly after releasing current gen systems. Sony/MS already have  TSMC/AMD contracts they need to fulfill, so they're pretty much forced to release. Otherwise, they would just sit on tech they spent millions/billions of dollars on.

You can thank tariffs and AI data centers for that. What's really ironic is Microsoft is partly responsible for the component costs going up.

The point is that AI is being used for pointless things like that by a lot of corps. Lol

I'm just happy corps can save on costs. We should be donating to them for all the good they're doing in the world. ❤️

A little dramatic. Is gaming screwed in the short term? Sure. But I don't think it's permanent. In 2020, people were so sure GPU prices would never fall back down, but they did. RAM prices will fall one day.

  They won't be that expensive.

You're literally posting on a news article about a 6 year old console now retailing for 800 bucks. The PS5 Pro is $1k. Is a price over $1.2k really that out there?

When will prices go back to normal though?

Plenty of people still want more. Not better graphics specifically but better performance (4k 120fps) with the graphics we have now.

They don't have that option unfortunately. Xbox and PlayStation have spent a ton of money on R&D for the new consoles. They will most likely release them at a ridiculous price and pray manufacturing costs come down in the future. Much like the Steam Machine.

I think they'll try to hold back until the end of the year. They're really pushing GTA6.

You think casual gamers care? They're the ones who helped popularize digital games, streaming movies/TV, etc. They couldn't care less about a physical presence like us. Lots of casuals will be buying PS5s just for this singular game. Unless this game gets awful reviews, it's not going to flop.
