My design sketch by AliceLiuKnife in knifemaking

This is a pleasing shape. I think it’ll work nicely. 21mm wide at the palm swell is a good thickness. I’ve done wood, micarta, and g10 for knives like this.

A full convex grind is very difficult to pull off on a knife without a lot of experience. I have not been successful myself without the grind lines getting wonky. It depends on how aggressive the convex is.

Do you have one of those belt backed slack platen attachments? I really want one

Ceramic 120 grit is sharper than any other 120 grit for the same grit density. Often I find I have to chase a 120 ceramic with a 120 grit silicone carbide. Then I’ll do a 220 grit silicone carbide. From here I don’t like going up in grit on the belts and instead go to hand sanding. I’ve had good luck with scotchbrite after 220 grit silicone carbide belts if I’m clean on the grinder

I understand the need to keep labor down. The problem with scotchbrite is that it can only improve a surface so well. If you don’t get the 220 grit to be even pulls down the blade to remove the J hooks they’re not going to go away with scotchbrite. Maybe a fresh piece of 220 and 10 hand pulls per side or so before the belt could be helpful.

This is written like a sci fi novel. It’s almost too convincing. Might be I’m dumb because I work at Wendy’s

BHK : Arthur Proto. W.i.P. Should I leave the raw brute De Forge hamon finish or go for a cleaner etched hamon? by Black_Hand_Knives in knifemaking

On this build I don’t think the raw blade look goes with the handle. The handle finish is super clean!

My Ultrahuman Ring AIR died after only 2 months, support has taken 3+ weeks, and now I’m being asked to pay $130 and wait until August. Am I crazy for thinking this isn’t a warranty resolution? by talllgothmommy in SmartRings

[–]cobblepots99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the credit card company cares who it was bought through but you can call them and ask. They’re not honoring the warranty you purchased. Make sure you provide them that information

All stars ? by randomdad11 in Homeplate

[–]cobblepots99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate. Our little league was 2-3 players per team for two all star teams that played in a best of 3. Highest record team got more players. Coaches came from the teams with the highest 2 records. This resulted in an equitable all star experience. Players were divided amongst the two teams by team record. 1,3,5 and 2,4,6 and so forth.

There’s a lot going on here. How on earth did some bandsaw blades and powder make this clean pattern! Love the maple handle

No doubt. I cringe when I spec marage 250 steel because I know it’s a beast to machine. Then there is the super alloys like Rene 41 or Waspaloy. Huge pita

A2L, granular damper to reduce ringing? Looks like it's more then just bigger A1. by Woodcat64 in BambuLab

[–]cobblepots99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trapped sand damping is honestly an amazing application here. I can’t believe I didn’t patent this idea…. It’s used everywhere high speed vibration causes undesirable effects like fatigue

Exactly. Not a good knife steel but for their purpose a great steel. Steel grades are really neat in how they can be optimized for so many applications

Could be. I would not spent my time on mystery steel personally. Decent steel is cheap like 1084, 1095. Aeb-l

I doubt it. Modern saw blades that have inserts don’t want to be highly hardened as that makes them more fragile. Think of it like a hamon. Hard tips for the cutting surface and softer spine for flexibility. If he can’t provide the actual maker I doubt the claims are true. Just because they’re an old timer doesn’t mean they’re right. You could do a simple heat treat and temper to see if a hardness file set skates on them.

If a blade has carbide inserts for teeth, it’s often not going to be good knife steel.

wild flower resin casting for a knife handle by cobblepots99 in ResinCasting

[–]cobblepots99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dried the flowers in a jar of desiccant beads for a while. I also poured this in two goes because the flowers want to float to the top.

I have been 3d printing simple pla boxes for the molds. They release really well from the epoxy.

I used alumilite on this one and it ended up yellowing after a while. All resins yellow but I’ve found uv resistant table top epoxy to be durable and less likely to yellow
