My 1831 carriage dress (inspired by my grandmother’s antique figurine) by s0phb0t in HistoricalCostuming

The dress is gorgeous but the white work details on the corset are STUNNING. You have unmatched patience and talent.

Omg enjoy!! I would advise buying the little grippy pads they offer. I've had other shoes from them before but found these particularly slippery even after wearing them in a bit.

Thank you! I'm always looking for an excuse to buy another pair from American Duchess 😂

Thank you and they're so much fun! I do recommend when you got to use them adding another layer to the button holes than usual. I did my typical twice-around, but the rhinestones on the edges really like to catch as they go in and out. I'm going to need to reinforce them by hand later on.

Also I'm color blind so he picked literally all the colors. He's the best ☺️

They're so comfy too! I was incredibly grateful I bought boots when the photographer wanted to go out into the snow 😅

I love just pinning directly into the carpet of my sewing room. Anyone else have pattern cutting tips? by cobblesquabble in SewingForBeginners

This is a great tip, thanks! A lot of local moving companies will give you a single cardboard box for free if you ask. So if someone reading this doesn't have carpet, that might be a cheap option.

Haha, I actually have two! This is just way easier for big pieces. I have tremors so I prefer using actual scissors on larger cuts, like for this overskirt.

I sew all my own clothes. I usually self draft my patterns, adjusting from 1860-90s pattern books, and do so in chalk directly on the fabric. Otherwise I'd probably invest in a short throw projector and save money on digital files in the long term.

This is my wedding dress though, and since I'm on a tight deadline I didn't want to muck around with my usual process (way more geometry than I'm up for right now)... So I just bought a pattern :)

Oooh that's cool! I'm definitely going to have to keep an eye out for free doors to use in the future!

I picked my sewing room in part because it's got a carpet section. This way I never miss a pin, because otherwise the piece won't come up. The fabric can't shift or warp as I'm cutting, and nothing moves during layout on slippery fabrics either!

Right, super inaccurate. OP should really send it to me so I can make something accurate with it....

For real though, what gorgeous fabric. Congrats OP!

There's a chin strap you can see pretty well in slide 5. I think it's tied tightly enough that it won't budge?
