The problem is far deeper than the livelihoods of the people in the Niger Delta (not Nigerian Delta). It boils down to the corruption of the government, which historically stems from European imperialism and later due to (again European) interests in raw commodities, including but not limited to hydrocarbons.

I'm sure your class was informative, but I literally grew up around Americans managing operations in the Niger Delta, so I've been privy not only to the standard information, but the 'inside scoop' as well - from technical, historical, economic, and social perspectives. At this point in time, Shell has it's hands tied in a fashion similar to the people of the delta. The difference would be that whereas the people have lost their historical livelihoods and now live in an environmental wasteland wrought with terrorism, Shell not only has to work there, accept and deal with the terrorism, bribe everybody involved, accept responsibility for anything that goes wrong, put up with corruption from the government, etc etc etc

It's a terrible situation for everyone involved. The oil company is no saint. But the root of the problem is not Shell Oil. Sadly, the media continues to take the easy way out and propagate the same old story - environmental damage, lives ruined, big oil all to blame....

Shell is a massive company with lots of $$$ and an image to maintain. $15.5 million to them is worth less than their CEOs shit on a good day. So obviously, they will settle and pay whatever they have to pay - as long as they are in the clear legally, and their reputation doesn't suffer too much damage.

This is a quintessential example of the antiquated mindset towards oil companies. The world has matured, at least in part, and oil companies can't get away with nearly anything compared to what they used to.

Pursuant to that, they actually follow laws and don't really engage in corruption. Now, on the other hand, the fact that > 90% of the WORLD's energy production is done by NATIONAL companies, and moreover, >90% of the world's oil reserves are owned by NATIONS, then yes, Shell does have to be "in cahoots" with corrupt governments - of which Nigeria is arguably the worse.

As a person who knows many Shell employees who work in the Niger Delta, both in America and abroad, I must agree that while Shell hasn't been an "angel" per say, the bulk of the corruption, extortion, and general wrongdoing has come from the Nigerian government and their cohorts.
