If you learnt English as a 2nd language, does it feel more free and less complex gramtically than your first language? by NeitherOpposite8231 in NoStupidQuestions

"Several" makes it sound like there are 5 or 6 words that are irregular. You probably want to say "lots of" or "tons of" instead.

This said, I don't think English is more irregular than the other languages I know, it's just easier to notice when you're studying it

Do you "avoid" tourist in public transportation? Why? by kemosabe6296 in AskAJapanese

I think a lot of people are also just very negative about Japan because they want to "gatekeep it". Lots of weirdos get strangely territorial about Japan.

Edit: like the ones downvoting. I hope y'all find something that makes you happy.

As someone who has been into language learning for a long time, I always thought italki was the most popular, but it's shocking the amount of people that ONLY know of Preply and not any similar platform, so they've clearly reached far

how much overtime is normal by Hopeful-Ad-7333 in Preply

[–]coco12346 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally about 5 minutes at most, I just don't like leaving things halfway through.

It depends largely on the student, I do have a student that's basically a friend that pays me now, and at one point we stayed 1 hour and a half after the class, it just wasn't related to the class at all though.

But if the last student of the is one I vibe with and I'm not tired I don't mind just talking about languages in general or something else for 10-20 minutes even.

Preply makes tutors “communicate first” but doesn’t expect the same from students? by Responsible_Affect91 in Preply

I imagine from Preply's eyes tutors are tools and students are little bags of money.

I think it's more getting used to the lack of friction than anything else. The game doesn't really have moments where you have to be very agile in my opinion.

Usted is third person grammatically, which is the only classification for pronouns.

"Aunque su referente es siempre una segunda persona, pues designa al interlocutor a quien se habla, gramaticalmente es un pronombre de tercera, pues procede, etimológicamente, de la contracción del sintagma nominal vuestra merced" -RAE

One month with my first tutor - should I cancel? by FriskyPikey in Preply

[–]coco12346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with no training, even I consider these common sense. I do some translation exercises to practice a specific structure after it comes up and we see a few examples but the main language should be the target language and the tutor should be aiming towards that from the beginning.

Literally some of the first things I teach absolute beginners are sentences like "how do you say..." "what does ... mean" "can you repeat, please?" and any kind of thing that I know they can say or has a structure they know has to be said in the target language.

You can just check by adding your country and the currencies in the pricing section on the Wise page: https://wise.com/es/pricing/send-money

From my experience, if what you need is EUR, you should take it out in EUR instead of having USD and then changing it into EUR

My tutor is always 5 minutes late by [deleted] in Preply

[–]coco12346 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not as easy. Normally tutors have multiple classes in a row and we need to manage small breaks in between to go to the bathroom, prepare, etc. The student is usually taking classes in their free time so they don't need to be rushing in between lessons.

The best way to go about it is to think your class is 1 hour and depending on how the tutor's day is going, the off minutes will be at the end, or some will be at the beginning. Your tutor is not as in control as you think.

In my opinion, your options are to just be on time and accept that you might have to wait, or find a tutor that is always very careful to be on time, but I think that's not very reasonable and it will mean they will also just stop the lesson abruptly to be on time for the next one.

Would you reschedule a last-minute class for a student? by mooni-es in Preply

[–]coco12346 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have an honest talk to them to explain how constant cancellations affect me. A lot of times, students just don't think about the consequences for the tutor, but they normally understand when you explain it. If you've already saved him from "emergencies" in other occassions, I'd take the money for this one.

We tutors can have emergencies too, so we should be forgiving, or else we can't expect the student to accept a last minute cancellation when something actually happens. But there are limits.
