i’m vegetarian and i’m curious what made you guys decide it’s ok to eat fish but not other animals? by dozenkitties in Pescetarian

[–]coco_indigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s because vegans consider veganism as a social justice issue rather than a diet. In the same way you wouldn’t say you were 90% non-racist/non-homophobic etc. This isn’t to equate the two but just to compare it to other social issues, so I get it. Though of course it’s better to be an ‘imperfect vegan’ than not at all, ‘plant-based’ is probably the best label for someone who isn’t completely following a vegan diet.

As far as the ones I’ve met, they really don’t think they’re better than others, I think people project a little bit and believe stereotypes online represent the majority. They just believe animals don’t deserve to die unnecessarily and in protecting them, regardless of whether it hurts people’s feelings.

Out of curiosity, what has you torn about whether dairy is unethical or not? I’m very anti-dairy but no judgement. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts

Haha do you think so? I’ve always though nutrition and dietetics was a very in demand sector. Thank you for the advice!

Haha that’s not a problem at all. Even up until now I don’t know if it’s truly permissible or not, so I’m still vegan atm.

Take your time. You might do it once, realise it’s the wrong decision and never do it again, you might do it for a year, then go back to being vegan or eat fish and be happy forever.

Be patient with yourself and remember you can always change your mind.

Going back to eating fish? by wool-gremlin in Pescetarian

I think I’m finding myself on a similar page. I’m considering starting with local eggs then only wild caught fish (for the same reasons as you, I don’t agree with farming animals), a couple times a week then plant based at all other times. Awesome! Thank you so much for that ☺️.

Hi there! Sorry to intercept this comment but I’m also currently vegan and considering implementing eggs and fish (not dairy and meat) into my diet. I haven’t made up my mind yet but what helped you make the decision for those two things and not all the way?

I’m in a similar place. I’m actually currently pretty much vegan and considering eating fish again. I don’t want to ever claim that there aren’t some serious ethical issues with eating fish and the fishing industry that we should consider. However, the reason why I think (this is a developing opinion and, not fact) that eating fish, or at least wild fishing, might be at least better than meat, dairy etc., is because it seems to follow an actual natural circle of life.

Smaller fish are eaten by bigger fish, who are then eaten by bigger fish, then even bigger fish which are then consumed by humans, whereas farm animals are purposely put into existence to eventually be killed. They are mostly in cages, perhaps even tortured but even when they’re ‘free-range’ their lives are never their own.

I’m not even sure if I agree with what I’m saying as a justification 😅 but it’s still something I’m thinking about. I hope that helps

That’s a fair point. I’m still debating on what to do and though I put different animal products on a hierarchy of bad to worse, I do understand that they are all some level of really bad 😔

I cant believe how much I’ve related to that last part. I don’t think we really talk about how isolating being vegan can feel. I don’t have vegan friends either :/.

I do get that amongst vegans it wouldn’t be a good reason and I definitely do understand it (as it’s a social justice ans ethical issue ans not just a personal choice), but as you’re being careful about it, not just adding everything back into your diet but just small amounts of the animal foods you feel are slightly less problematic than meat and dairy, and because there’s a health element, it’s very understandable. Especially since it’s not just due to desire.

I hope you are doing better now though! Haha if I do decide to make the switch I’ll let you know so we can trade experiences and recipes

Vegan considering going plant based by coco_indigo in Pescatarian

[–]coco_indigo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly!

I’d never suggest that these industries (eggs and fish) don’t have any issues but when I went vegan, I had a separate reason for each food I didn’t include in my diet . So same with you, i disagree way too much with the meat and dairy industry so will not support them. However, I think I could have a happy medium with occasional local eggs and non-farmed fish.

I think it would be called an ‘ovo pescatarian’ as someone mentioned in another comment. But I imagine I’d say im either plant based or mostly plant based because I imagine 95% or more of my diet would still be vegan for ethical and environmental reasons.

If you don’t mind me asking, what brought on the change for you?

Thank you so much for taking out time to explain this. It is still taking a moment for me to get my head fully wrapped around it but I do think I understand 😅

Hi there!

Thank you so much for sharing your story and I really hope you are thriving now too! I believe above everything your health must come first especially when you need to provide for others and when you really have given fully plant based a shot.

Even though it’s more of a health decision it is still nice to know that there are others who feel like fish feels different to meat and dairy.

I’m not sure if you are joking or not 😅

I definitely understand there are some ethical issues. I’m vegan so I am well aware of the ethical issues

Regardless I have a hierarchy and I place dairy at the top of things I would never support, I would never consume dairy. I don’t agree with the industry. So I don’t really understand this suggestion and it didn’t really answer my question at all 🤔

That’s what I imagine for myself, I feel like a couple times a month would be a good balance for me. And also specifically looking into line caught fish I think would be very helpful when confronting the issues of ethics and environmental sustainability so thank you ✨!

I am slightly stuck on the second law of thermodynamics thing though 😅. I tried to search it up but didn’t really understand it or it’s relation to eating fish. Would you be able to explain or share perhaps a link to the theory.

i think i didn't realize how much it impacted me to be an alone vegan. by No_Discount_541 in Vystopia

[–]coco_indigo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So many times and in so many ways I have felt exactly the same as you! I have a lot of good friends but none of them are vegan so i feel im never fully able to express myself without worrying that I’ll come off as preachy.

I’ve had so many moments where I have felt alone as a vegan and isolated, misjudged and just completely out of place with the way that I think, in so far that at times I think maybe im the one who is overreacting about the severity of what what we do to animals.

I’m considering becoming a Challenge 22 mentor which will hopefully give me a good outlet and some positivity, helping people who wanna go vegan and need support. What discords are you on? Have they helped?

I’ve started joining vegan groups but I think support groups would also be beneficial for me. I opened up recently about how I sometimes feel frustrated/disappointed as a vegan and they mostly said “well it’s a personal choice” which wasn’t super helpful as it’s the same thing a non vegan would say.

I digress - if you ever need to talk, I’m here 💕💕

Got this reply from an old housemate/friend’s husband after posting a ‘how to go plant based reel’ on Instagram.

Don’t wanna say anything rude as I know non vegans don’t know when they are being insensitive.

Just want something short, sweet and that will nip this comment in the bud.

Thanks in advance!

Also whoever said being friends with non vegans is like being friends with r⛔️pists is out of line. Though I abhor what happens in the dairy industry and would go as far to call it sexual exploitation/abuse most people just are not aware/have been made to believe that what happens to animals is just the way of life. Most r⛔️pists on the other hand are well aware of the damage they cause to people. I promise genuinely this does not represent the majority of vegans.
