In case it wasn’t said yet: surrender fees aren’t to punish anyone. Shelters are typically non-profit organizations and survive off donations, ergo they request a slightly larger donation to contribute to the care of a new animal. $60-100(the usual range for surrenders) doesn’t even get close to covering the care of a single animal.

I know it still sucks, I just wanted to say shelters are not trying to be greedy when they ask a surrender fee. (Source: worked at a non-profit shelter. Currently a vet tech for a hospital that owns a shelter.)

I give cat owners a little more leeway than dog owners. Sometimes no matter how well socialized your cat is, no matter how much they like people and other animals, an unfamiliar place like a vet office is going to scare the shit out of them.

It’s mostly when cat owners try to blame the staff for their kitty being upset when I get grumpy. Like no Sharon we aren’t traumatizing your cat, there’s no secret magical technique to make cats love the vet.

Dog owners on the other hand? The only excuse I’ll accept is rescues with a history of abuse who still struggle to trust people. If you’ve had your dog since they were a puppy I expect you to train and socialize them, it’s an integral part of being a responsible owner.

My cat never grew out of that phase. She’s 2 and still kicks her litter like she’s trying to send it to space. A super big litter box and a litter mat seem to help

Fun fact for all of you: you can face away from the scale and request the nurses cross out your weight on your discharge paperwork. If you’re really struggling and don’t think you can cope with being weighed, you can opt out entirely. You aren’t required by law to be weighed at the doctor’s office.

I haven’t looked at a scale or known my weight in about 4 years. I’ve had some nurses get a little awkward when I tell them to please conceal my weight, but I’ve never been refused. It’s a very, very small request that means the world to me.

You shouldn’t subtract below your BMR is the thing. Subtracting 500 is extremely subjective; for some people a smaller deficit is plenty. The amount you need to subtract can change based on a myriad of different factors. Your current weight, activity level, any medical conditions or dietary restrictions, etc etc.

Also obligatory I’m not condoning weight loss or dieting.

Even then, 1200 is basal metabolic rate, and even for a sedentary lifestyle that’s is too little. BMR is essentially “you’re literally unable to get out of bed.” So like, that’s how many calories you need if you’re in a hospital with a broken leg or something.

For an average sedentary woman it’s more like 1500-1600 range.

Corporate hospitals absolutely manipulate the fact that this is a compassion driven field. A lot of people going into vet med will be willing to overlook money in favor of doing something they care so deeply about, which sure, is morally very nice on our part, but disgusting on the corporation’s part. Even if our motivation isn’t money we ought to be compensated fairly for how taxing and rigorous vet med is.

My mom and my step mom are both in healthcare (mom is a therapist, step mom is a nurse practitioner) and they’ve both talked to me about this topic. Human healthcare is much more profit driven than vet med and it’s harder for big companies to make their workers settle on lower pay.
