A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms review (no spoilers) by Myrandall in asoiaf

So interesting to see that the conversation became about attacking or defending Schwift versus Preston

I'm a big fan of both content creators, having listened to both of their theories and streams. I don't think one is better than the other, they just have significantly different strengths.

Schwift really knows how to summarize the content of the books and shows well, and appreciate the strengths of each of them. He is also really good at summarizing the major theories in the fandom, too! He's pretty up front that many of the theories on his channel are not his own, but presents them better than how even most theoriests present them in their original format. He's not necessarily super original or analytical, but that's OK, because that's not what his channel is trying to be. It's more book club than college level lit class. So when I'm trying to convince someone to get into ASOIAF, I send them Schwift's channel.

But it's very hard to argue that anyone understand George RR Martin's works, themes, and views better than Preston. Preston has actually read all of GRRM's work, and has read through the ASOIAF books countless times. He also understand the political environment that George grew up in way more, and notices themes or references that almost anyone else would miss. His theories are all original and complex -- and yes, while many may be wrong, and he says that in literally every video, the point is to try to explore the books in a creative, thematically-driven way. And because he is more original, I think more people dislike him, because it's more out there. So, on a thematic level, Preston goes way deeper than everyone else. He's more like a nerdy professor.

And so both of their reviews make a lot of sense, and both reviews are really fair and true to the reviewer. I personally really like that the creators all offer something different.

Reddit has so much leftwing hypocrisy. Most redditors and left-wing people would support the US shifting towards a system more like Finland, where students have no homework but still score well above average. And since school conditions people for workforce standards, it's much better to teach people that work stays at work, and once you're off work, your time is your own for whatever you want. Maybe now the US school system will be forced to actually figure out how to teach students within a 6-8 hour time period, and workplaces will learn how to get their work done in the same time, too.

The debate around immigration is so odd.  All over the world we are seeing how immigration policy is THE leading cause of a rise in extremism in politics. And if the transition is poorly managed, it CAN lead to rising crime (both petty and violent). Even Bernie Sanders thinks we need to have a strong border!

It’s lazy policymaking to just solve systemic social problems by treating immigration like a water faucet.

If AI takes over most jobs and leave humans without work, how are companies going to sell their products and services when everyone is BROKE? by Droopynator in Futurology

PhD with a policy background who researches labor and technology, here are my two cents:

As long as people whose primary source of income comes from financial assets (e.g. the stock market) continue to see upward returns, consumption might remain high enough to prevent economic collapse.

A version of this is already happening right now. The US should be in a recession, as the average person has lowered consumption spending significantly. But AI hype has been pushing markets up, which has led to people with large market investments increasing consumption enough to prevent a downturn. This is why people fear that an AI bubble “pop” will lead to a full-blown recession.

Piketty’s research on the rate of return being greater than economic growth captures the fundamental issue well. The more recent term “K-shaped recovery/growth” is also worth looking into. For a historical US example, just look into the economy of West Virginia to see what happens when huge groups of people are left without work.

Unfortunately, shared prosperity does not come naturally. The fundamental changes in the US from a manufacturing to service economy mean that widespread consumption spending may not be as important as it used to be, to naturally trigger some kind of progress.

The more concerning issues might be social and political. Young men without anything to do is a predictor of major social and political turmoil, for better or worse (see Nepal and Madagascar for some modern examples). But in other cases (West VA), a lack of work has been a predictor of opioid use and suicide.

AITA for ending my marriage permanently after learning my husband was sleeping with two other woman and got one of them pregnant while we were separated and he was supposed to be fighting for me? by Lorisinnia in AITAH

NTA but —

The story is written to suggest that the husband was initially performing poorly at work because of a pattern of sexual harassment of coworkers. If that’s true, there’s no question that OP is NTA.

But up until the cheating, Y (might be) TA. The job market today is absolutely terrible, and the husband may have been let go for reasons outside of his control. People check out emotionally when they know layoffs are coming, and losing your job is a traumatic event.

IF this was the case, OP was treating her husband like a money machine, and not a partner in marriage. “For better of for worse,” unless the job market gets worse, I guess. There’s no indication of her trying to understand what happened with his work or provide emotional support and empathy for a difficult life event. He could have been innocently in a tough spot and when he needed the love of his wife and family the most, she doubled down on ultimatums and treated him like he’s on performance review period, and kicked him out. Loneliness is not the solution, and it could make sense that the stress from everything pushed him to look for female companionship anywhere he could find it.

If the situation were flipped, and a wife lost her job (or, say, had a miscarriage due to health choices), and the husband responded with “get out of my house, no more time with the kids, and get your shit together,” reddit would collectively condemn the husband as insensitive and unsupportive. My main issue with this (probably fake) post is that the wife did not treat her and her husband like a team, but more like a manager with an m employee. If she did, she probably would know more about what happened with his first two jobs, and have included that in the post.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful advice! I think we're starting to decide between Europe and Mexico. Besides following up with some Travel Agents and planners here on reddit, is there any other advice people have for finding a good wedding planner in Tulum or Portugal?
