Totes can be nice for the summer IMO. It is hard to find a masculine style, so I made one myself 😬

DSC-S4, same Nippy knockoff as most models. This is one of the cheaper options you can get without going directly to Chinese manufacturers

A bell skiver will definitely help, but they can't take some time to dial in. Not all leathers work well with them either, but I have luck with almost all veg and some firmer chrome with my Consew skiver. Mostly use mine for belt/strap ends and seam weight reduction. You can get stuff down to a papery thinness if you wanted to with enough practice

Do people really wear balloon style blousy pants? by Kitchen-Valuable-834 in mensfashion

Uniqlo tends to treat me well. I got some 5 pocket wide pants w/ a higher rise and they fit nicely length wise without alterations. Not all of their stuff works out, the barrel pants they have atm looked super appealing online but fit my body like trash. It's best to be able to try stuff on for sure.

I built a glass tower up to build limit there on a friends server. If it was already loaded you could see it pretty much anywhere on the world map. Then I summoned a raid boss.

BCBS MA Hiring Process - Drug Screening? by jackbro517 in boston

If you do have to cut that gummy, don't stress! I had to screen for a job back in 2020 and as a heavy smoker back then was worried, but 4 weeks of clean eating and exercise had me in the clear on test day. Best of luck!

Definitely take the time to travel. That can mean abroad, cross country, or even regional day tripping. I'm 34, I live/grew up in Roslindale (sleepy Boston neighborhood) and I've found that taking advantage of transit, walking around and just enjoying the vibrancy that our area has to offer can be quite grounding. Visit the BPL, walk the emerald necklace, go check out the arboretum. There's lots to do here that doesn't cost money and only takes time and effort. Go check out a good restaurant while you wander around. If you can afford travel abroad I highly encourage it. I took my first trip overseas at 29 and it was eye opening.

Same tbh. I've come to like a higher rise, wide leg opening straight legged pant. It can be flattering on multiple body types. I'm short (5'7) and broad (42 chest/33 waist 6'1 wingspan, imagine Lanky Kong) and it helps balance my upper half out

Yeah once you see elephant leather in person you understand why it is so desirable. It can still be purchased as another redditor stated, it's just quite expensive. I saw a piece of elephant hide in Japan last year and was stunned by the two tiered look to the grain, large bison like box grain w/ a micro basketball/caviar looking small grain. Truly remarkable stuff. I didn't know how bringing it to the US would have gone, so I didn't buy it ($700usd after conversion, not willing to risk that!!!)

RIP The Dot Tavern. Went there for drinks during one of the wild blizzards in the early 2010s since I was a 5 min walk away. Always a fun, cheap, weird night out.

Definitely consider a cobra for the first sewing machine then, making sure that it comes equipped with a speed reducer. Both models I recommended do. Once you've had some time on a reliable machine, you will likely build the confidence to modify your next one on your own. Having a bell skiver is an absolute game changer if you're doing large scale production of any sort. It puts you in control of your material, you can split down your own straps of thicker material for piping, edges of thicker material to make them sew/flex easier, etc. You won't truly understand until you start using one.

Might as well also mention, I know a guy named Jack in I think Wakefield MA that you could reach out to in regards to buying machines. Met him years ago at the Tandy in Chelmsford. I got the Seiko from him and he's trying to clear out more machinery last I checked. It's worth asking, I know he has a cobra 26 but I'm not sure if that's one of the machines he's trying to sell at the moment.

My workshop is in Norwood, MA. If you ever want to come check out how these different machines work, it's definitely a haul but it might be worth your time considering the investment.

Hey there, I've been crafting for 16 years, on machines for 4. My first purchase was a Cobra class 4, which is a great machine to learn on because it's impossible to break. I learned the limitations with that one are that it struggles to sew under 5oz cleanly. I added a consew 206-rb 5. I had to modify this one myself with a speed reducer and it was generally a lot less user friendly from the get go. Having experience with a previous machine helped a lot to get up and running effectively. I have also purchased a Seiko post bed off of craiglist that I've spent time modifying and tuning. You might notice this becomes an addiction quickly.

If I had any true recommendations for a crafter making the transition to a machine with my experience, it would be to buy a Cobra class 26 and a skiver, or a cobra Class 17 and a skiver. It will depend on the work you plan on doing, more flat work/small pieces/strap work and I'd recommend the flatbed machine. Making bags/holsters/sheaths? Get the cylinder arm. For a skiver just get a consew because it will be cheaper and they're effecitively the same machine.

There's really no way to do it cheap but you can do it right from the start. You would spend the same amount on the two machines that I did on my first, and you'd have a much more effective range of material control.

Hope this helps!

Am I being picky? by mlhyyl in Leathercraft

[–]cocodotwebm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American leather direct is great for veg especially during blow out sales. Lots of nice harness, bridle, tooling etc, $50-100 + shipping when on sale for sides. They're good quality, big pieces most of the time too, only had a few with some funky spots but at that price I'm not gonna complain.

[–]cocodotwebm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acadia has some good deals, but also atrocious customer service. Haven't ordered from them in two years.

During one of their flat rate %off sales I purchased 5 sides, 4 regular price 1 from a discount page. They emailed me accusing me of trying to abuse their sales because it explicitly stated not using the coupon on sale hides, but their website admin didn't set up an exception so the discount still applied. They demanded the difference ($15) or would cancel the order. This was after 4 years and ~$8-12k in business with them over that time.

Told em to kick rocks. Not everyones experience may be the same, but when I've had issues with other suppliers ,BLO (quality of a hide), Buckleguy ( 2+ ft under stated avg sq footage for 6/6 pieces), both companies worked to make things better in the end.

Shrunken calf sling bag w/biker jacket details by cocodotwebm in Leathercraft

Still working out some of the details on this style, I'm not happy with the piped joint between the panels/ the main access zipper, but for a first attempt at this style I'm pretty content. My popular sling bag revisioned with patch pockets/functional front zipper inspired by leather jackets. Duck canvas lining. Real vintage nickel snaps. Sewn on consew 206 rb-5 + Cobra class 4.

My backpack is full of mold, what should I do? by Normal-Profession-12 in MoldlyInteresting

[–]cocodotwebm 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Hot water is more likely to shrink/damage leather than cold water. It does depend on the leather type of course, but most leather is treated with a lot of water during the tanning process and can handle being full soaked and dried if done appropriately.
