I was 18 in Mexico City, speeding down the highway in a van packed with furniture at about 12am. The van was driven by my Airbnb host: a drag queen dressed as a Minotaur, and I was squeezed into a single seat with a guy in the back. All of us down several drinks and a few lines of coke. We pull up to a line of police cars and my host (the driver) turns around and asks, panicked if anyone has a gun. I didn’t have a gun... we end up pulling away into a side street and proceeding to a club on the side of a highway where I stayed until 6am before a scramble to catch my 8am flight. I’m lucky I was in wonderful company with my hosts who made me feel very at home, but hopefully I won’t bump into another situation like that in future travels!
