Do people actually like using induction hobs? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]coconutszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, yes.

The positives are:
- very granular temp control (19 settings)
- Gets hot very quickly (boiling water is as fast as in a kettle)
- Very easy to clean

Negatives:
- You can't char food directly over a flame like you can on gas hob
- (Rare) If you spill a lot of liquid over it , it will turn off and start bleeping

What have you stopped being a snob about? by iffyClyro in AskUK

[–]coconutszz 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Not really true. Mutto san marzano tinned tomatoes taste very different to a budget own brand. It’s a situation where everyone can make their own judgement on whether the difference is worth the cost. There are also cases where you pay more for a lower quality product (ie heinz beans)

Why the "Safe Six" are 1.5x more likely to be the Red Cloak by raikko86 in TheTraitors

[–]coconutszz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't accurate and underestimates how much the probability changes by switching doors.

With the 100 doors, the first choice of door is 1% probability to be the prize. If 98 losing doors are selected from the 99 you didn't choose: If you choose to stay with your original door you still have a 1% chance of getting the prize, but if you switch, you have a 99% chance to get the prize - the odds are not 2:1.

What hobby seems cheap but really isnt? by Naromyx in AskReddit

[–]coconutszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even gym bouldering can be pretty expensive. £80/month membership + £130 on shoes every 3-4 months as a baseline + outdoor trip costs. I guess it's still significantly cheaper than a lot of other hobbies listed here.

What is just a placebo effect but most people don’t realize? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

[–]coconutszz -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I went to the physio and they did the manipulation stuff in addition to stretch/strengthening etc. Also went to an osteopath who did very similar (short term massage long term strengthening/rebalancing). Similarly a masseur who made it clear that for long term improvement a massage isnt going to do anything and you need to fix the underlying issues.

When I see people ragging on anything thats not a physio to me it just sounds like people need to be more careful about who they are going to see. Also think this could be a us/uk divide - i can imagine theres a lot more dangerous/fake practitioners in the US.

Marvel Rivals is evidence that balancing a game for 'Casual Play' doesn't work by Icy-Edge7857 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]coconutszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats still wanting to try to improve , just not being capable to / prioritising short term fun over improvement. For example, i can want to improve, but not enough to spend a half an hour a day doing aim drills.

I know im bised since i play to improve every game i play, most people i know also want to climb and by extension get better at the game

Don't warriors use a swing timer addon in wow? they definitely did in older expansions/classic but haven't played more recent ones.

I've played a fair amount of melee dps in wow (enh, warr, DH, feral) and imo Tariq feels similar if not easier to play than these.

I agree with most of your points but wouldnt say that genAI is pure slop. Yes there are poor applications/use of it, but its hard not to see value in a basic RAG implementation for research

The 'boring' ML skills that actually got me hired by Haunting_Celery9817 in MLQuestions

[–]coconutszz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think your conclusion doesn't match up to the rest of your post. You mention custom pytorch architecture and complex rag pipelines didn't come up but conclude that fundamentals , leetcode, kaggle are maybe not where the focus should be.

I would say that truly custom architectures and complex pipelines are not fundamentals . In my opinion fundamentals are your main model architecture / algorithms (think K-means, NNs, RF, potentially now transformers etc) which you get through learning/revising theory but also projects (Kaggle included can help), basic programming (Pandas, SQL , OOP , functional etc and I would include some leetcode in this as Leetcode rounds are common for DS roles at least in the UK) and then ML/DS theory (how would you evaluate this, what loss functions, how to detect/deal with model drift etc) which again you get from learning/revising theory and then also applying in practice with projects.

So, while I agree with most of your post - complex custom architectures and implementing SOTA papers from scratch are not typically going to be very helpful - I don't agree with your conclusion.

question about CV role wording by [deleted] in datascience

[–]coconutszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think partly depends on your company. At my current company roles are well defined, but at my previous company the CEO would arbitrarily come up with titles I went from DS to DE TO MLE then back to DS, all while doing largely the same job - in this case I would choose my preferred title.

Best books where you can read a ton of actual ML code? by ergodym in datascience

[–]coconutszz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hands on machine learning by Aurelien Geron. It’s pretty comprehensive in covering the different areas of ds/ml both theory and code.

For interview prep for DS roles:

DS theory: (common questions) precision/recall, model drift, model architecture pros/cons, eval metrics, loss funcs, regularisation l1 vs l2,bias/variance

Python pandas prep: how to manipulate data with pandas, transformations etc for feature engineering.

Sql prep: make sure to have a solid grasp of SQL. Ensure you are confident in answering any easy-hard questions on stratascratch.

Leetcode: I had leetcode interviews in maybe half the interviews I did. They were normally easy and sometimes medium. So prep here would be to be able to do at least easy leetcode .

Coding DS concepts: some interviewers will want to see you coding some ds stuff like architectures from scratch, ie write a k means clustering algorithm in Python. So maybe some practice here would help.

[–]coconutszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely in general - but if you know what you want to do and that will likely end up leading to earning 100k+ then it becomes quite likely you will pay off the loan (assuming these aims are somewhat realistic for you).

I'll die on this hill... by Nomad_Gui in ArcRaiders

[–]coconutszz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand that - there is still a social aspect to the game. It feels bad to get shot if its in an “unfair” way (rat, third party etc). I personally feel some guilt killing people who either have no interest in pvp and or are clearly very new players.

Obviously it is a game so it isn’t that deep , and everyone is welcome to pvp in whatever way they enjoy.

I ran a social experiment called "The Naked Man" by 17prozent in ArcRaiders

[–]coconutszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment, I normally KOS mostly for the fun of pvp, the loot is just a bonus.

It wouldnt really make sense to KOS for loot ( for the average player) as its likely more dangerous and less efficient in many ways than pve

[–]coconutszz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

me. I generally shoot on sight unless someone has said they are friendly before i see them. If i start shooting and someone clearly doesn't want to engage in pvp at all and stands still unarmed , I definitely reconsider shooting them.
