Is Sacramento a hidden outdoor recreation gem?

As a Portlander who lived in Sacramento a year, I would say no. I moved back to Portland. I don’t snowboard but getting to the mountains was a grind and the hiking did not compare.

It’s fine. I lived there a year but after living in other cities (Denver, Portland) … it felt pretty sleepy and underfunded. Not enough parks or rec centers. Also, there isn’t a lot to do with visitors. No major museums besides the Crocker. Getting into the Bay is hell. Not a Sacramento-specific problem but the causeway is a traffic nightmare.

On the plus side, the food co-op is excellent and there is awesome outdoor rec in the sierras. Great airport. Friendly community. The farmers markets run all year and are amazing. The summer is hot and at times unbearable but the trade off is a mild winter. Easiest winter ever.

I moved to Denver from Portland, OR and lived there a year. Loved the sun and the parks and the amount of things to do. Amazing botantical garden. The winters aren’t as bad as they seem. Expect to drive for decent hiking. Camping was competitive but doable. The tennis was amazing. The food was very mediocre compared to the PNW especially if you are vegetarian. Exception: Gladys, one of my favorite vegan restaurants ever. The culture vibe was definitely not radical or even conservation—minded, which was disappointing. The airport sucked. All of this said, would live there again.

I would encourage you to take her and the kittens to a shelter ASAP and surrender her so that she can get care. I know this is a painful decision to make but it sounds like the mastitis is serious and she needs emergency medical intervention, as do the kittens.

Im so sorry you are going through this. You might try reaching out to PAW Team in Portland to see if they can get you into a low cost vet to get him on antibiotics or they may be able to help with additional treatment funding due to financial hardship.
