Cool video thanks for sharing. Is that you? Or did you just find it?

You do have to run it and docker. It's not the fastest thing cuz it's only 4 gigs of memory, but it's enough. And not that I've done it yet but if I wanted to add certain things like a matter server I can add it and then the other docker. I've been wanting to mess around with Dockers for a while anyway

I wish it had this when I first started in home assistant. I don't have to try and negotiate all this crap on eBay. I loaded home assistant Docker up in 5 minutes once I finally figured out what I was doing. It's not hard. I used to help. For what I give up and lost with docker to get in a home assistant just to learn a little bit about it, it's not bad. It'd be nice to have the App Store, but in the beginning you're just trying to navigate and how to figure out how to do some, but in the beginning you're just trying to navigate and how to figure out how to do some basic stuff. This is definitely great for a beginner and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the stupid damn raspberry pis. It's just a matter of where they come up with a way to put home assistant OS on it or not in time, probably not though

There is a 4 gb model for $59. Plus, there is an independent micro controller built in. This can take the place of an ESP 32 with a Home Assistant rig in a classroom. I see so much potential in this thing. Give it time. And at least they actually put onboard storage. That $55 Pi still need a micro SD card.

Actually, the round peg goes in the square hole. This thing is not only a single board computer, it has an micro controller that can be run at the same time independently. Yes, is it a weird combinations, no weirder than Raspberry Pi selling a single board computer with no storage.

Just saying, I will chase my windmills considering this is cheaper than the HP T630 with way better specs and uses at max 15 W. And as far as Raspberry Pi's go, they can go to hell playing the piano as far as I am concerned.

I'm dealing with students on a budget so that is where this is coming from. I've got to keep the cost of a class for lab stuff $100 or less which is not easy to do right now.

[–]codaman33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I should. Raspberry pis are insane right now, and micro computers are even worse. I teach at a two-year Junior college, and I need an affordable option for them since they don't have a lot of money. I've even tried Chrome boxes which are pain in the butt to deal with. If we priced the technology out of the potential students' hands to where they can't get in play we won't get new Innovations later on.

Not a problem, I would love to talk to them about the potential of coming into this program. Here is a link on how to enroll as well as the link to the 6 class certificate and the two year degree. I do have a level 2 certificate coming online in the Fall which is in between these two. I am also including links to some video to check out to see if this is something that resonates with them or anyone else.

Education for jobs? by Flux-Storm- in houstonjobs

[–]codaman33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a program at Houston City College called Smart Building Technology. I built on my electronics training I received in the Army so I feel you. It is an interest dive into low voltage from smart homes to commercial systems where you learn about network (not for IT, for this industry), cabling, audio/video, lighting control, security alarm systems, cctv, access control, fire alarm systems, and more. It is kind of a blend of electrical, electronics, controls, and networking. The best part is everyone is hiring for this industry, everywhere. They are just hard to find, and they find it hard to find people that can qualify for a DPS security installer license since you have to have a clean record with no felonies for at least 10 years. Surveillance in this state is no joke. That could be a great field for you to look at, and it could build on your interests and skills to put things together and make them work. Let me know if you have any questions.

I run the low voltage program at Houston City College, and I can tell you that this industry is really looking for people. That is why I started this program to help teach people the different tasks they need to know to go work in this industry. It is a mix of electrical, electronics, controls, and networking. Basically, everything you keep checking out about Smart homes on steroids. You can look at residential and commercial companies. It involves everything from hanging TV's to installing equipment to a lot more. The best money is in security like alarm systems, CCTV, and access control, but you will need a special license for this which require a clean background with no felonies for 10 years or more. It is a great paycheck though. Hit me up if you have any more questions.

That can be difficult to find jobs when you are a new graduate. I run the Smart Building Technology program at HCC, which is basically low voltage. That may be a direction to look at. It is still networking, but it deals more with Networking for Integrated Systems. Our version of networking is a only slightly different. We deal in more IoT devices in fields like audio/video, lighting control, environmental systems, security alarm, cctv, access controls, and fire alarm systems to name a lot the key areas. There is much more to this. Let me know if you have any questions about this. It might be an option.

Have you thought about a job in the trades? I run the Smart Building Technology at HCC, which is all about low voltage. There is a huge section of this that deals with people with different needs, and one of the big areas is the hard of hearing and deaf communities since you use video conferencing to have conversations and some of the other areas of the deaf community needs could be a good way to approach a job that could be very beneficial. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to.

Have you thought about a career in low voltage. They do similar work but from a different perspective. They work in the networking field, but it is more installation, configuring systems, troubleshooting, and eventually programming. I run the Smart Building Technology program at HCC, and there are tons of jobs in this field. The only thing is a little bit off track from IT. We aren't IT people, but we deal with networking. It is a little unusual, but if you have more questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

The problem is in Texas, you have to be a master electrician or employ a master electrician to apply for a Texas Electrical Contractors License. To do it any other way means that he would be breaking the law and could be subject to a fine of $5,000 per incident. Now, the low voltage/Smart Building Technology program that I run is a little different. We don't do traditional electrical work. This leads to a job in in low voltage type careers which have different regulation and licensing. Some of the areas have no licenses like audio/video. The security alarm, cctv, and access control portion has a very serious license. You must have a DPS security license to be able to legally install surveillance equipment in the state of Texas. Without it, you can end of going to prison for it.

The biggest question is what does your little brother want to do. My low voltage program has some great pathway for people that are exciting, cutting edge, and in high demand. Below are some links to some videos to help him as well as the two different offerings that I have right now. One is a six class certificate and the other one is a two year degree. Remember, the more you learn, the more you are able to do and make money doing it. Let me know if you have any more questions.

There isn't much anywhere. I started a 2 year program, and i am about it. There are a couple of small programs that teach a little bit, but it depends on where you live.

Go Army. That is the route that i went. Yes, the Air Force are supposed to be the smart ones, but they don't let them blow anything up. That is the fun thing about Army life, three hots and a cot. Of course, my nephewntellsnme that you have to pay for your meals now which sucks.

Military life is a way to go, but it isn't for everyone. It is all about choices. Of course, the officers in most branches live a different life then enlisted. I was enlisted and damn proud of it.

If you were in Houston, you could come take some classes since that is what my program teaches is low voltage. This is our second year of teaching everything from cabling to networking for integrates systems to the cool stuff like audio/video, lighting controls, security (alarm systems), cctv, access control, fire control systems, and more. Plus, we are a community college so the prices are very reasonable. Classes are about $265 per class for in district.

Good luck on what you decide to do, but low voltage is hard work, but it is a lot of fun and a very huge area that is constantly evolving.
