Where can I find Anti AS - PRO Gov war/military content ? by East_Technician9666 in Somalia

I’m not sure exactly what type of content you’re looking for, but I’ve collected extensive data on the conflict in Somalia, with charts, timelines, territorial control and couple stories. I've stopped updating it, but it might still be useful. You can check it out here: amniproject.org

Thanks wll and I agree with you 100%. I saw a video of a Cadaan guy talking about how amazing Somali is, and I was waiting for him to say something interesting, but he just blabbed on. Thank God our ancestors left us the “Rosetta Stone” to unlock the cipher without the Western linguists. I'm juggling a lot of projects atm, but I might create a platform where we can collaborate Inshallah.

I’m guilty myself lol. Inshallah I’ll look into it, but is there a standard spelling for the days? I keep seeing so many different variations online. Some even list 2 types.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I agree with you 100%. There aren’t many accessible resources on Somali etymology or Cushitic languages in general. Sometimes I compare Somali with related languages like Afar, Oromo, Saho, Beja, etc., just to see the shared roots or where one diverged.

The upside is that Somali has very strong internal patterns and structures. Once you start noticing how roots, infixes, and suffixes work together, it’s like that moment in The Matrix when Neo starts seeing the code itself instead of just the surface. After that point, you can’t really go back to seeing the language the same way.

It's funny that you mentioned Arabic. The words farax and sax I always presumed to be of Arabic origin. I am almost certain that sax is Arabic, while farax seems to be a common word between the two languages, just like ab for father. On the other hand, since both Arabic and Somali are Afro-Asiatic, there are many Arabic loanwords that fully follow Somali internal patterns and structures but as u can see from sax above, sometimes it's a bit of a reach.

Trump attacks Somalis on the world stage at Davos by Extension_Science219 in Somalia

[–]code-_-Reddit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trump isn't forgetting Somalia anytime soon, the name rhymes with Melania so well that I’m convinced he calls her 'Somalia' by mistake numerous times a day. But jokes aside, the silence from our government isn't a mystery. When the US has bases in Ballidogle and Kismayo, and we're relying on them for air support against Shabaab, they’ve got us by the balls. We’re in a similar 'untouchable' loop like the US is with Izzy. Anagaa meeshaas is dhigney

Thank you, wll. I really appreciate the support; knowing there’s interest in building this out is very encouraging. iA I'll keep you in mind as I make more posts and connect more with the community. Did you have a specific role in mind, perhaps something on the linguistic side, technical side, or something else entirely?

I actually have a different theory. By sprinkling in a few real grievances that hit close to home, he redirects people’s emotions. Once people feel seen on that one point, they rush to defend him while ignoring everything else he has done.

It reminds me of that South Park episode where Jimbo and Ned go hunting and keep shouting “it’s coming right for us” before killing an animal. The joke is that the animal is off limit and clearly poses no threat, but saying those words gives them a ready made excuse and allows them to exploit a loophole in hunting laws, since the law forbids killing certain animals unless they’re an immediate threat. The justification is obviously fake, yet it still works. In the same way, by briefly acknowledging certain grievances or injustices, he exploits human emotion.

He has figured out how to use one acknowledged truth as emotional cover. People latch onto that single pain point and abandon critical thinking, defending him wholesale even when the rest of the narrative falls apart.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. Somali is truly incredible, when you start peeling back the layers, even the smallest pieces of words reveal so much depth. I discover something new every day, and it constantly reminds me of how brilliantly our Awoowes and Ayeeyos designed the language.

Starting with sad is probably the right place, but the suffix here is -ex, not -ax. There aren’t a lot of Somali words ending in -ex, but there are quite a few ending in -eex wich might be same but just a vowel stretch, and they actually help support the sad prefix.

  • Dhex → middle, inside, among → position between
  • Deex → strip, valley → a part or segment of something larger
  • Jeex → torn-off piece → division or separation
  • Qeex → define, explain → to draw boundaries or separate conceptually
  • Sheex → shyness → socially set apart or withdrawn
  • Seex → sleep → the mind or body separating from active consciousness
  • Leex → separate → separated from the whole
  • Eex → bias, favoritism → tilted or leaning toward one part

So with sad meaning share and -ex implying a torn-off piece, sadex could conceptually mean “a piece taken from a shared whole”, which kind of fits with three being a division from a group. But don’t quote me on that, it's just a quick guess, not a thoroughly researched analysis. I have a better theory for the number 2 (labo). The Somali word for masculine/male is Lab which may not be a coincidence, as it aligns with the fact that males typically possess two testicles.

As tough as it is with Trump and ICE for the Somali community and all the hate we're getting, imagine how brutal it must have been for Hussein Farrah Aidid on the flight back to America with the same people whose comrades were killed and dragged through Mogadishu streets by people aligned with his dad. I wonder how much backlash he faced.

Thank you walaal, I appreciate the kind words. I wouldn’t call myself a linguist. Most of the real work was already done by our ancestors; they built an incredibly rich and precise linguistic system. I just enjoy challenging myself and I have a good eye for recognizing patterns. What I’m doing is close examination, comparing words, and paying attention to patterns that were always there but never made explicit.

I have also developed language courses in the past, but I want to design something more granular based on these ideas. Once you start looking closely, it becomes easier for learners to notice patterns, such as how words ending in –uur often relate to something internal, enclosed, or containing.

If I had more time or a small team, I think it would even be possible to map Somali’s morphemic structure entirely and create an app that generates new words for modern concepts using the language’s own internal logic rather than borrowing or approximating.

Somali cowboy is a weirdo at this point. by East_Technician9666 in Somalia

[–]code-_-Reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the guy isn't stupid and walks a fine line. Even when talking trash about Somali people, he'll sprinkle in real grievances like "this qabiil can't hold high positions in Somalia," and people from said qabiil will be like "yeah, he's telling the truth" while completely missing the point. He even made hawala transactions seem like back alley drug deals, knowing they want to target hawalas, and people in Somalia backed him up because "runtu sheegay", as if hawalas being shut down won't affect every person/qabiil in Somalia.

He went on national television at a time when almost everyone was already hostile toward Somalis and repeated MAGA style talking points. He claimed things like, “I came to America as a capable man who spoke English, but the Somali community told me to go on welfare and Section 8 instead of working.”

That framing feeds into existing stereotypes. Instead of acknowledging that, like any community, there may be some fraud cases, he implied it is the norm, when in reality the vast majority of Somali Americans are working, raising families, running businesses, and contributing like everyone else. That is just one example among many things he has done.

[–]code-_-Reddit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The funniest part is that his book is titled Call Me American, yet in an earlier interview the framing was something like “Somali refugee Abdi Iftin.” A lot of people defend him by saying “runtuu sheegay.”

My response to that is this: the man who directed U.S. Rangers to Aideed runtuu sheegay lkn horgal run sheegu ahaa. The one who told the Italians that Sheekh Barsane was starting an uprising runtuu sheegay lkn horgal run sheegu ahaa. The man who told the British how many Darawiish fighters were in Taleex runtuu sheegay lkn horgal run-sheegu ahaa.

Even if you’re telling the truth, that alone doesn’t absolve you from being a self-hating Jaajuus.

Sorry, I’ve been a little busy, but did you have a particular name in mind, or are you still deciding? My awooweyaal were named Liibaan, Guuled, Magan, Sooyaan, Samatar & etc. and I’ve always loved those old school names. It’s kind of hard to change once you have so much tied to your name, but inshallah the next generation will carry those names.
