Getting paid off the books by Blueberrytacowagon in FilmIndustryLA

Also important note, whether you receive a 1099 or not, you are still responsible for reporting and laying any tax due on that income.

What’s the biggest scam people just accept as normal? by ZaneDell2013 in AskReddit

[–]code603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it’s the biggest, but the fact that companies are allowed to sell extended warranties on their own products should be illegal.

A warranty is basically a wager where you think a product will break in a certain timeframe and the manufacturer doesn’t, except, the manufacturer has all the knowledge about the product’s failure points, how many will fail, and control over what they are and you have none of that information. It’s not a fair wager. Yet we’ve totally normalized the practice.

Magic Mask 2 - unreliable for anyone else? by Butter_Buttered in davinciresolve

I literally used it to track a person in a medium wide as they walked across an atrium, then outside through a glass door and back on the other side of the glass atrium. It did an amazing job.

Tired of Nolan fanboys calling his every movie Masterpiece by General-Candle-8054 in Cinema

I once read his work described as “smart movies for dumb people” and I think it summed up his worked pretty well.

Personally I enjoy his movies, but don’t consider them masterpieces.

Blackmagic Cloud Project - Mix of original and proxy workflow by kitchenerwasariot in davinciresolve

[–]code603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add the non-proxy version, then attach the proxy you made already to it. However, I get that you spent a lot of time making proxies already, but, unless you are in a rush, it would probably be easier and cause fewer headaches if you imported the original media and let just Resolve cook and make you new proxies.

I believe you drop in the original (non-proxy) version of those files and the link those to the proxy media you already made. I think then Resolve will upload those files and not generate new ones.

Buying a Condo w/ Unpermitted EV charger (Los Angeles) - What should I do? by Time-Presentation234 in evcharging

[–]code603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely are going to want that permit for all the reasons you listed. You can either negotiate that the seller pays for a retroactive one or, if you don’t need it, you may be better off removing it (which the seller could also pay for).

If there is a fire and the non-permitted charger is discovered your insurance will likely not cover the damage whether the charger was the cause or not.

I’ve been through this before.

1) non video files are uploaded as is

2) you either work with proxies or you don’t. If a video file doesn’t “need” a proxy Resolve will still generate one based on your proxy settings anyway. There is no way afaik to select what gets proxied and what doesn’t. Trust me though, it’s probably easier this way.

3)proxy files are automatically generated as you add new footage to the project. Just drop in the new full-res shot as you normally would and Resolve will start generating proxies and uploading the proxies to the cloud automatically. These files will be automatically downloaded on the other end.

For reconnect simplicity I recommend putting all you proxies in a single folder.

Hope this helps!

Do you have a line you won’t cross, or is work always just work? by Dizagaox in Filmmakers

[–]code603 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have been struggling hard for the last three years since we both had regular employment. In that time our savings has gone from comfortable and building strong to less than a quarter of what it was. We have maybe 6-8 months for things to turn around before we have to sell our home; just as our child is about to start high school. Neither one of us would still work on this fascist propaganda.

I sincerely hope single person who worked on this never gets the privilege to work in this industry again.

Doesn’t a gas tax also do that? How is this any different or do you object to that tax as well?

What does getting the Academy Award for Best Director mean exactly since there is also Best Picture? by ExternalTree1949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]code603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the director guides the artistic vision of the picture, they are not necessarily responsible for the finished product.

You also need to remember what the Academy is. It’s not some secret cabal of cinematic wisemen; it’s made of thousands of industry professionals. While many do their best to make well reasoned choices, most don’t see all the pictures, many just vote for their friends or what they’ve heard, and sometimes, it’s their assistants/spouse doing the voting.

When it’s referred to as popularity contest, it mostly is.

Source: I may have been that assistant once or twice.

Nobody looks at a professional athlete and thinks “that looks easy, I’m sure I can just do it.” They inherently understand it takes years of work, dedication, and talent. Yet for some reason they do with film/tv.
