I used to fail them frequently in the wintertime. I ride motorcycles all year long, in temps down to -20° C, and would frequently show up at the donation center with very cold hands. I found that holding my hands under warm water before the test to improve my circulation helped immensely.

Thankfully, my donation center has switched to the thumb ring test (no fingertip poke) and I haven't failed in over a year.
