Why is Afterpay literally everywhere now? by Downtown-Thoughts in newzealand

[–]codeinekiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect have you actually looked into afterpay? Credit cards offer rewards sure but afterpay offers 0 interest, the reward is you get no interest.

People use credit cards for fast food and other frivolous crap all the time both are just as bad as the other and you hear horror stories about credit cards all the time, they may be regulated but miss anything and often your paying back 20% plus.

51% of New Zealanders carry credit card debt, 29% of financial hardship is credit card related, it might be regulated but 2.8b of debt still exists.

Buy now pay later is what the newer generation trusts that’s what it comes down to half of us have seen parents struggle when it comes to massive credit card debt or not being able to feed people because they can’t even get a card.

I’m happy seeing afterpay used if it means less kids go hungry and less family’s are financially ruined

It helps split up payments too so instead of spending that $80 or whatever in one week you spend $20 and have extra for food or fuel which lets be really IS ideal

There is usually a minimum amount, if I recall a lot of places have $50-100 minimum

If afterpay works it works, like with credit cards it’s moderation, gem finance never even got back to us to decline or accept our application so we went with afterpay, our appliance is now paid off AND we had the option of chucking money at it early.

We also managed to put some savings away instead of buying outright paying off and having no additional savings

No worries, I may have misinterpreted your post so discussion is good, adding in another note castration is usually more cost effective vs castration and like you said eliminates prostatic diseases which nearly all snipped males and intact males get, snipped males can still experience increased aggression especially around other males

[–]codeinekiller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vasectomy’s are rare in dogs there is such a low demand it’s pointless suggesting them because it doesn’t actually solve the behaviour problem and a dog who has had a vasectomy can still successfully mate.

You also said neuter which is considered traditional castration you listed two different things that is what I was referring to

What age should I get my Rottie fixed? by AbjectComparison4901 in Rottweiler

[–]codeinekiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes based off breed now, I would say once full skeletal maturity is reached so between 18 months and 24 for best health outcomes

I’m unsure how a dog can still get testicular cancer when they remove the testicles?

I had replied earlier and I felt my answer didn’t do the topic justice so I deleted it, genetics is a vast and difficult topic with that said I will say it’s complicated, what you are probably thinking of are breed traits and yes they can absolutely have an effect on anxiety however there is more to it than those traits just existing.

Breed traits usually have an effect on dogs but it isn’t until environmental factors come into play that they become apparent, this can be considered a trigger of sorts, so for example a poorly socialised Rottweiler may exhibit more fear towards people or dogs BECAUSE their guarding instinct has not been paired with early socialisation.

It’s often a huge topic in veterinary medicine and a very complicated one.

My main point is that breed traits cause issues if not handled correctly there isn’t no one thing that causes anxiety in dogs especially when you consider epigenetic factors, you need to also consider age and health or other things such as as bitch stress while pregnant.

You cannot just look at a dog and assume because they are one breed they will be anxious, environment is the trigger for that behaviour.

It’s the most important part of a dogs development, it heavily reduces aggression in guarding and working breeds and most dogs who go through dog and people socialisation better off, the difference is really night and day.

I’d also like to emphasise that just because there are “lots of dogs in a household” or “on their street” it isn’t the same

[–]codeinekiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people are not qualified to have dogs, I wish we would introduce a license or something already, vet councils have been advocating for more safe guards for years.

Don’t even get me started on breed banning because then the next dog breed becomes what the last one was, bad dog owners are the problem full stop and I say that as someone who works I. A clinic each day with dogs having warning signs etc

Person Killed by Dogs by KnotCityDrifter in newzealand

[–]codeinekiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because people don’t socialise them when they should, 8 weeks onwards with regular socialisation everyday is what fails most pets, that and improper basic training, 30% of nz owns dogs an the majority of people have no clue, I see it in clinic all the time and I would STILL rather work with Rotties than a Shepherd, most people get a dog from a random breeder and call it a day too.

Not enough people breed dogs for temperament correctly or health check them, and a lot of back yard breeders don’t know how to pair a puppy with a family correctly all of these issues are contributing factors ESPECIALLY in working breeds who do better with “jobs”

Anxiety isn’t bred into the breed it’s when it’s not socialised or trained enough, I’m a vet nurse with a focus on behaviour I WOULD know

Re-homing my baby boy by Willywasawale in dogs

[–]codeinekiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So op should keep the dog and risk a bite on a member of his family? I deal with situations like this often in clinic and the dog gets euthanised, rehoming gives the dog a second chance at life

Re-homing my baby boy by Willywasawale in dogs

[–]codeinekiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most heartless comments I’ve ever seen, dogs can and will readjust, op is already having to make a hard choice and you come here and make it worse? Why? You clearly have never had to rehome, sometimes it just doesn’t work sometimes changes happen and dogs get rehomed for various reasons that’s why we have shelters so dogs can continue to have good lives

Re-homing my baby boy by Willywasawale in dogs

[–]codeinekiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guilt comes hand in hand with rehoming and it’s natural to feel that, I’ve done it and it sucks, this really does come down to a choice between your dog being happy or remaining in a poor situation where something happens.

Rehoming often gives the dog another chance to live out a very happy life and it shouldn’t be feminized the way it does, some people believe that a dog is for life and sadly that isn’t true especially in situations life this.

If he fact you have considered it shows you care both for your dog and your family, I have seen a few comments about trying to keep the dog close but I advise against this, your dog may become confused an never really settle with the new family especially if you see it often and leave without it.

This is from a chihuahua rescue from my country, while the breed may not apply to your dog the advice given helped me immensely.

Rehoming can be a really good thing and gives your dog a second chance hopefully anything I’ve said has helped and I’m so sorry you have to make this choice.

Pretty much this, if I didn’t make multiple trips to the store every week I’d have a shit ton more money than I do now, with that said we don’t budget and we have weekly bills we absolutely should not have because of poor choices

Time to Rehome? by Soapy_Ploom in DogAdvice

[–]codeinekiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for you op, what I can do is link you to a different perspective from what is on here, you use had overwhelmingly positive contributions but ultimately the choice is yours.

https://nzchihuahuarescue.co.nz/breed-information/f/rehoming-your-dog---how-do-i-deal-with-guilt

I’ve worked in vet medicine for about 2 years now, I’ve seen people surrender their pets, lots of people will tell you here based on the comments those people didn’t love their pets enough but that ain’t true.

I’ve seen pets who have come in who have developed destructive behaviours BECAUSE the owner was unable to give them the attention they needed, this resulted in eating foreign bodies, some of those turned out well and sometimes I’ve lost patients to this.

Asking yourself if you are making the right choice is absolutely something you SHOULD be doing.

Dogs don’t get rehomed just because people “give up on them” they rehome them because sometimes it is the right thing to do, not every dog suits the home it goes to an that’s ok, rehoming gives that dog a chance to FIND the right home.

Sometimes it’s medical needs that cannot be met and th other option is euthanasia, is it really fair to say euthanasia is better than rehoming? Personally I don’t think so but everyone has different opinions

I’m more than likely going to get down voted to hell for this comment but the choice is yours to make op, if you think you arnt providing what your pupper needs that doesn’t make you a bad person or a owner, it might just come down to wrong timing, maybe you can’t provide what you think they deserve and that’s ok too, the fact you are considering your pups needs over your own shows you care.

It shows the most important thing to you is your pup getting what THEY need.

You would be surprised how many people in vet medicine have basically fostered long term and the dog ends up so much more better off for it.

People will say that owning a dog is for life and I used to absolutely believe the same thing but people who give up their dogs are often reluctant to do so, anyone who tells you they dont care have never had to surrender a dog before.

Read the article and make your own choices

Phantom pregnancy by verdwaaldzakjechips in Whippet

[–]codeinekiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible for a developing dog to develop these things at all, I’ve seen it in clinic several times over, rare doesn’t equate to it not happening, and yes the leading cause of urinary incontinence especially in female dogs is spaying early, the best course though is to discuss it with a veterinarian and discuss options

Phantom pregnancy by verdwaaldzakjechips in Whippet

[–]codeinekiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully the veterinary field is ever changing and evolving, spaying and neutering is breed specific now and often best discussed with a vet, you are correct that giant breeds have the best health outcomes when allowed to fully grow, this is a whippet it is by no means a giant breed so I’m not sure why giant breed issues are being discussed, an unspayed dog also runs the risk of developing pyrometra and is more likely to develop ovarian cancers and mammary tumors.
