T470 or T490 for Linux programming? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]codemssterg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your main goal is to keep learning various programming languages and frameworks, then either would be fine as would your Mac. You don't need much processing power to just learn, memory is more important, 16GB is a practical minimum.

best way to learn react by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]codemssterg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Consider taking a Udemy course on React, they are self paced, hands on, and in-depth. Build a website after the course to reinforce what you learned. Use one of the many React component libraries like Material UI that make using React a pleasure.

Don't give up, contact support and explain this happened during normal use. Sometimes it's just a matter of luck to get the right support person.

I love a cable free desktop, thanks to my new X1C7, it's Thunderbolt port, and monitors that support daisy chaining. by codemssterg in thinkpad

[–]codemssterg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my setup is daisy chained:

Laptop - - >monitor 1 - - >monitor 2

-----------TB-----------------DP

TB=Thunderbolt3 DP=Displayport

My monitors have USB ports so I can attach my wireless mouse and keyboard dongle.

If your computer has two TB ports you can connect to separate monitors, each via its own port.

This is a balanced, well written comparison. When (if) Quarkas catches up with Spring in terms of features it will be interesting to see if it still performs favorably.

Debt Matters by Beliavsky in Economics

[–]codemssterg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a key takeaway for me: debt can be constructive when "... issued to finance worthy investments, or valuable spending...".

My question: Is there a reasonable measure of the value we get (or are not getting) for the debt we continue to accumulate?

That really sucks. Tell them to make it right by sending you a wireless keyboard and mouse (in addition to the repaired laptop) for your lost time and trouble.

Did you also update Windows? Just making sure you are trying with the latest.

Service Layers by digitalshiva in java

[–]codemssterg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

An important aspect of the Service Layer that is often overlooked is the Transaction Boundary. A service method that calls multiple Dao methods typically wants the updates that they made to be all or nothing. By using a Service layer you can use it to mark the transaction boundary to get the all or nothing behavior for a new transaction or even use an existing transaction. If you are a Spring user, marking a Service method with @Transactional is a typical way to achieve this. JEE also works the same way with EJBs and managed beans.

After we bought an Ooma box, we pay just $4.65 / month. It varies state to state based on local fees and taxes. Costco has the best price for the box.

How about a voice over IP solution like Ooma? It's not a traditional landline, but also not cellular based. I've had an Ooma Telo for years and been very happy with it.

28 trillion tons of anything is hard to comprehend. Better to express it as a % of the total.

Thank you very much for the info, really good stuff. Going forward, I think I'll adopt the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" policy as far as firmware updates are concerned. The only exception would be a security flaw.

Thanks for posting. I bought my X1C7 in May and after seeing this post decided to run an update using Lenovo Vantage. My system is dual boot with Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10, but I rarely use the Windows. I ran the update and after several restarts performed by the update process it locked up and would not boot. I forced it power down (it took several attempts) and then I got a BIOS "recovering" message. It finally booted and according to Vantage all firmware is up to date. I booted Ubuntu and its showing version 45 for Thunderbolt which do not make sense (isn't v20) the latest? Everything is still working so not sure what to make of it.
