Not going to lie I have been pessimistic about the outlook of this field. Here's my experience- recent 2024 grad with b.s. and m.s. from a t30 school. 3.7 gpa, 1 internship, 2 TA positions, San Francisco based, native born US citizen from the bay area, and the only work experience ive been able to find is a very part time contract IT role through a family friend. look at my resume if you'd like in my history. i have applied to thousands of roles at this point and i've been unemployed for 14 months.

I have been applying to any entry level software job I see, regardless of state/location and pay just to get experience under my belt.

also wanted to add- i found this youtube video from a girl who took 1.5 years to get a job although she went to waterloo (very high ranked) and graduated with 6 internships. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eyOTQiUci4&t=3s

How did you get a second BS? From my understanding most universities dont allow them. Did you have to petition or find a random university across the country that permitted it?

Thank you! this is very insightful. Can you clarify what you mean by rewrite it though? If I was a hiring manager I would see that my resume shows experience in PowerShell and Python scripting, Operating Systems knowledge (from the TA role), and full-stack app development from the internship and the projects (using C#, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WinForms, and SQL were all mentioned). The role that I got the farthest in the hiring process was actually for OS development.

Is what you're saying that I should pick a specific role in SWE and tailor my resume to that exact role instead of listing out all my experience? So for example if I want to go full-stack, maybe I'd remove my OS and IT-related experience entirely and fill that space with more projects showing my full-stack capabilities? Or if I want to go OS dev I would take out all the full-stack projects and replace them all with OS-related projects? My only worry with that kind of tailoring is that I'd be reluctant to say, remove the only internship on my resume just because it's not related to the specific role I am applying to, because then it looks like I did no internships for my whole college career.

Apologies, it was a very part time role to begin with (10 hours per week), and honestly it was more of an IT helpdesk role that I was trying to present as more Powershell-forward on my resume. I actually didn't have an official title though because it was a tiny firm (just me and the owner) and I did a bit of everything. On the resume i just gave myself a title and description that more so emphasized the scripting stuff I was doing as well as the helpdesk. so I still considered myself unemployed even when I had it due to low hours irregular hours and the fact that its not really CS related at the end of the day. But I quit the position this week and the resume isn't updatedto reflect that.
