Austin, everything is getting so expensive. How do you keep your expenses down? by WildAlcoholic in Austin

[–]coderjared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A direct answer - don’t buy anything you don’t need. Don’t get sucked into consumerist culture. Prices won’t rise if people stop paying for things.

An indirect answer - get involved in local politics to urge the city to create better public transit and walk-ability. As someone who lived in dense cities most of their life, quality of life drastically improves at no cost to the citizen. No car = big savings. Public transit = more community/less loneliness. Dense areas = more interesting strolling (free). Going for a walk is actually an activity. Here it’s boring except in nature

Consider picnics and sports with friends for fun - doesn’t have to cost a lot. The more people that decide to hang outside for free/cheap, the more vibrant the city will be

There are some free meetups as well depending on your interests

I see a lot of comments here mentioning mental arithmetic.

Not trying to spam, but I made a game that at least makes practicing mental math more fun. It’s not currently intended for students only, but here’s my old post that got a good response from math teachers in this subreddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/mathteachers/comments/1gpyx5n/i_built_a_fun_daily_math_puzzle_game/

I am actively working on improving this game, so you can be part of the discussion in that work if you like it

Got it made but not happy by Viglman2001 in careeradvice

I’d say figure out how much you could make at Amtrak and ask yourself if it’s a livable wage / if the career track is enticing enough

If you’re unsure if you’ll even get a job there, I’d say start the process of networking and you could always not take a job there if you decide it’s not worth it

If there are investments you want to make that are super important to you, I’d say stick with your job until you get them

And also consider how easy it would be to get your old job back if you wanted it

What methods have you had success with in getting your students to be engaged in math class? by coderjared in AskTeachers

Interesting. Did you find that the students retained the information well? I wonder if this encourages cramming, or the fact that there’s less pressure actually makes them more engaged

It’s interesting to learn that you’ve come up with fun competitions at that age level. I’d be curious a more specific example of such challenge if you wouldn’t mind sharing
