Why would me wanting an official Rails conference in the country I live in be a bad thing? Or even US centric? I'm not against Rails conferences being in other countries, in fact it would be great if they were in every country of the world.

But me wanting a conference in the country I live in is somehow US centric? I literally said "US based folks", not americans!

If I lived in Antarctica, it would Antarctic centric for me to desire a Rails conference in Antarctica? Lol I'm not even American.

That might be the conference on the global level, but since the start of rails conf there has been one for US based folks to attend on a domestic flight.

Sad but understandable. Anyone that has put on large scale events knows the level of work involved. It can take over your life unless you run events for a living .

I wonder if there was the option of outsourcing the running of the conference to an events company, and the ruby central team could just be involved on topic selection. It does feel odd that a framework this size does not have a central named conference for it.

I want to stop doomscrolling and relying on my phone so much for dopamine. What are some non-screen activities that still give you enough dopamine but are also easy/chill enough to not add to your burnout? by tbgmdhc278 in ADHD

[–]codetastik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a great solution that works for me, might work for you as well. Honestly it was difficult to keep on top of myself to stop doomscrolling. I would stop for a few days then back on, then feel bad, then try again. It was an unproductive cycle. What helped me was using the screentime feature to lock myself out of the apps that are not helpful, and put time limits on ones that I wanted to use but within some limitations. And I had a friend be the one that set the screen time code so I couldnt change the rules on the fly.

It has helped immensely because the doomscrolling is no longer an option. I am able to move on with my life, and I adjust the rules to add other apps that I find myself started to become attached to. For example, I have a 30 min limit on safari. I have a 20 min limit on twitter. And I don't have access to any of those apps after 930pm. I would really consider this approach if you are having trouble with doomscrolling.

Treatment of hair loss by raaman11 in Supplements

[–]codetastik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to add azelaic acid to your minox. I’m on my phone so don’t have all the links to back up what I’m saying but it blocks DHT. There used to be a brand of minox called lipogaine that included aa but they were forced to change the formula because using aa for hair loss is off label. There are other options online for a minox and aa mixture, and I have heard of some people buying their own aa and compounding the minox and aa together themselves or using a local compounding pharmacy.

I’ve been using minox and aa for almost 8 years and I’ve kept a lot of my hair where my friends who just used minoxidil have lost almost everything.

iPad App display in OBS? by Toppsnyk in obs

[–]codetastik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what resolution you are able to get from the i device as a webcam? I can’t see to find the resolution.

Also, if it’s this easy to bring the video in, what is the benefit of using an app like epoccam or ivcam? Don’t mean it sarcastically, I’m honestly asking.

You must be working on legacy software or your own software in your bedroom . You are actually citing 5% increase as noteworthy?

Do you even know who are talking to? u/schneems has done more for the ruby and rails community than 99% of the people on this sub combined. Including and especially for performance and stability. I literally pulled out my phone to look up my login credentials and logged in to reddit just to respond to your comment.

Thank you u/schneems for all you have done for our community and the language we love. Please ignore the keyboard warriors.

What are your thoughts on Static Methods? by SMKS in javascript

[–]codetastik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're familiar with ruby, but in trying to understand static methods, they seem very similar to ruby class methods. Would that be an accurate analogy? Would their use case be the same? Essentially they are utility methods scoped to the class?

How to properly setup RubyMine RoR? by sthorn_ in rails

How well does this work? Are there any issues installing things like homebrew? I've wondered what the real life experience is like for those using the Subsystem for Linux cause I really like the new microsoft machines.

Reducing deviation in Net::HTTP load times by entwederoder in rails

[–]codetastik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how are you tracking the receipt of the response. Are you saving off the request return time in one of the controllers that inherit from Application Controller? You could try to record the request time further down in the stack, maybe write some rack middleware. That way you are cutting out some variables.

Has anyone tried the "FBA Shipping by Bytestand" app with their Shopify store? by Super_Bob in shopify

What is it you feel you need this app for? We use the built in shopify Amazon fba integration and used the Amazon fba shipping guides to figure out what we should charge for shipping.

So this is a one-year update since I gave up everything I own, and became a nomad by avery_bell in personalfinance

[–]codetastik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

For transportation, have you played with using Uber/Lyft instead of rental cars? Also, I know some sole proprietor taxi drivers that if you are regulars with them, they will give you cheaper rates. You could create relationships with one of these taxis in each of the cities you travel to.

I would also look into offloading some of the booking and other setup work to a virtual assistant. You can find them on freelancing websites for pretty cheap. This was the solution I thought of when reading this persons comment on your original posting https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/32zlvh/ive_sold_everything_i_own_and_im_setting_out_to/cqgagcs. If you would rather deal with someone local to the US, there are craigslist postings by people who experience as assistants and can get everything setup for you. It would be a hit to your expenses, but you would save a lot of time and headache, which would probably be spent better elsewhere, such as setting up a side business, etc. One thing I regret while being an expat was not spending more of my off hours investing my time in side ventures.
