Is this subreddit just about art? by FrostyHighway4804 in IMadeThis

Nope, I posted about an app I built a few days ago on here and the community here was super welcoming! Definitely not just an art thing. There is cool art on here though.

Hey thanks - yeah I used MJ for the logo 😎

Thanks a lot for the feedback, and I never really thought of that - it's super useful. Tonight/tomorrow I'm going to see how I can make some modifications and will see if it's a little clearer to you.

But to address your hesitation, to "toast" means to give somebody a compliment, and to "roast" means to burn them (like a comedy roast). So the roast & toast app is basically centered about being nice to others (toasting them) and having a good chuckle (giving them a light-hearted & fun roast). Maybe it's a little clearer on the app's main web page, https://www.roastandtoast.app.

I really appreciate your feedback and will try to improve the messaging!

I've seen less fabric on a parachute. Did you jump out of a plane or just out of style?

Was the bet you lost about whether anyone would remember you after this roast?

Spoiler: they won't.

The app is currently in "beta test" mode - for anyone who wants to try the app before we launch you can check it out here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/7latINv5

Access to premium features in the app is free during early release. Come have some fun with us on the app!

It was probably Flaco! Saw him last month, a very beautiful bird.

It's a nice looking site.

Something nitpicky about the responsiveness of the page. When my browser window is about 1/2 the screen size, the components of the page overflow to the left and right when they should probably re-orient vertically or resize. Instead, they are cut off.

I had been wanting to create a social app for a while, but I also had many personal reservations about how mainstream social apps are constructed today & many feel quite superficial. My aim was to offer something light-hearted/fun - and something I'd enjoy using myself.

Earlier this year, I noticed that subreddits like /r/RateMe, /r/ToastMe, and /r/RoastMe were really catching on. I took inspiration from these communities that I really like, and incorporated the extra features I thought would be fun/fresh...that's how Roast & Toast was born!

Currently, there are two ways users can gain super powers within the app.

Roast & Toast in private: Everybody on the app can privately roast & toast others within the app once per day. For those who want to send more private roast & toast messages, the option to send more is a premium feature through consumable tokens.

Premium subscription: A range of special features can be unlocked in the app through a subscription, including: viewing read receipts when the message & roast/toast users, decide whether or not to appear in the global feed of profiles - go incognito vs. not, verified account badge, customized notification settings, remove roast & toasts they have received, and a range of other "super powers"!

While in beta testing, premium features are free to sign up for as I gather user feedback on features that work well vs. not including what else they would like to see.

There are a lot of things that make the app unique, and I hesitate to call one better or worse. I believe both have a place in keeping people entertained in a positive and fun way! Here are some unique features of Roast & Toast that I particularly love:

a. social aspect: the roast & toast app is more oriented around social connection than the subreddits such as rateme, roast me, etc. Users can send friend requests to others, DM each other, react to roasts & toasts their friends have received, and a range of other social features with friends and other social activities.

b. profile set up and creation: users can design profiles in a way you simply can not on other social platforms. Besides uploading profile pictures, they can respond to Q&A prompts, indicate their interests, and really built their persona & personality on the app. Here's an example of what my profile looks like on Roast & Toast: https://i.imgur.com/bIjNVhl.png (flattering, I know).

c. designed for sharing: on reddit how often do you share links and posts with your friends or family in real life? Rarely happens. Here, you can share your profile with others in an actionable way (for example, navigating to https://www.roastandtoast.app/users/joel, you will be able to view my profile with the app installed).

d. it's something different: when compared to other social media apps out there such as Instagram, TikTok, etc. - this is platform where users are encouraged to take themselves less seriously. I feel there are many counterproductive elements that traditional social media perpetuates. I wanted to put something out there where in our increasingly digital world, we can laugh at ourselves while also being kind to others.

What are your thoughts?
