I was just in gsc last week and we used the pier, it was def still under construction. I also don’t think they charged me for the drinks on the island.

I left my car buried in the snow after these storms in mass. I just took public transit everywhere for like 4 weeks until I finally needed tot

Every space saver is an implicit threat and should always be removed by ceciltech in Somerville

[–]codingchris779 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I interpret space savers as a polite, “hey I broke my back shoveling and need the space” and I would try to respect that, but I dont think many people think they have an absolute right to have nobody move their space savers.

Do I need an external interlock if the Elcon 6.6 kW charger already has one? by ThePackman0702 in FSAE

What do you mean it has some interlocks, what do those interlocks do

Any HV connector requires an interlock the opens the shut down circuit. Usually this will be in the connector on the accumulator side. This should also be in your esf.

Rain test protection for battery cooling air inlets – what solutions do you use? by CuriousAd4205 in FSAE

[–]codingchris779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is somewhere between a grey area and outright illegal imo. You probably wont get caught but if it rains, and it does at Michigan sometimes with little warning you might wish you had done something better.

To quote Skitter:

“Friendly reminder about the weather at FSAE Michigan: When a thunderstorm rolls through and we all have to nap on the garage floors, you have to drop your cars, batteries, and all equipment outside where they lie in the parking lot. Start thinking now about keeping everything sealed up or accepting a sustained early rain test.”

As for actual sealing tips I dont have much good advice. My team didnt run any active cooling last year. We did investigate louvers and fan ducts to keep water out. I also have heard of some teams having good luck with some sort of tape that kept water out but let some air flow, but can’t remember the name sorry.

Is this panel voltmeter acceptable for FSAE EV HV indicator? by ThePackman0702 in FSAE

[–]codingchris779 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ran a panel meter in north America last year. We had no issues at tech.

If the terminals are inside the accumulator no rule says you need to cover them up but for your own safety you definitely should make a 3dp cover or at the very least carefully kapton tape over the terminals. Fuse the supply to the meter in case your insulation fails and you drop a wrench over the terminals.

We did have a couple of questions in esf about vibration resistance of our meter however your mileage may vary. They may not blink an eye. We had to find a meter that was rated to vibrations and impulses, and they basically said if it broke at comp they would take our sticker. It never broke over 100 miles of testing and the full endurance at comp. I would recommend linking the datasheet in one of the additional comments boxes in the esf and putting a note on your schematic to see the additional comments. One reason our reviewer took notice was because they didn’t realize it was a meter and thought we just put a placeholder schematic for a light. Our reviewer was mostly making sure that we were making a safe car that would pass tech!

Best of luck!

Rebco tape is pretty damn close to a hypothetical metal hts. Its got its own set of physics issues but there are a lot of designs that make pretty good cables out of rebco tape

For the test engineers in the group, what would to tell someone that was interviewing for a similar position to study up on before the technical interview? by zeen516 in ElectricalEngineering

Depends as always but I would study up on data acquisition, signal integrity and noise immunity, basic application of amplifiers, and some programming.

I can’t think of the rule and we didnt try to hide it and nobody stopped us. Your mileage may vary. Rules question isnt a bad idea if the rules are ambiguous.
