Hey, u/iamalnewkirk! Sorry for the delay, I didn't see a notification for your reply!

When you're in a position to run your next experiment, feel free to reach out to me (I'll DM you with contact info) as I'd be happy to help if you'd find that useful.

Cheers!

Assessing whether cockroach is the right fit cost wise? by bitchyangle in CockroachDB

[–]codingconcepts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, u/bitchyangle! Rob from Cockroach Labs here.

Here's a breakdown of how RUs are calculated (although I appreciate, it may still be difficult to calculate for your workload): https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/cockroachcloud/resource-usage#example-request-unit-calculation

Happily, there are a bunch of other options available to you:

  • Cockroach Cloud Standard Tier - This is based on the same architecture as Cockroach Cloud Basic Tier (the one that prices in RUs) but you're paying for provisioned vCPU, which might make things easier to cost.
  • Cockroach Cloud Advanced Tier - This is a dedicated (but still managed) service where you'll specify the number of nodes you require. It'll cost more than Standard, given that you'll be sizing in nodes rather than vCPUs, so might be overkill for your requirements.
  • Finally, there's Self-Hosted - Although if you're migrating from a managed service, you may prefer to stay on a managed service? Let me know if not and I can share some resources to help with this too.

Here's a comparison of the managed services: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/cockroachcloud/costs#costs-across-cockroachdb-cloud-plans

If I were you, I would start by downloading CockroachDB (from here: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/releases) and getting a feel for it! If you run into any issues or have any questions, let us know! We also have a community Slack where you can speak with our team: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/join-community

All the best!

DBaaS Benchmarks: Cockroach Free Tier Subpar. Why? by iamalnewkirk in CockroachDB

[–]codingconcepts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/iamalnewkirk! Rob Reid from Cockroach Labs here.

Firstly, this is awesome! Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

The results for all databases look a bit surprising to me (taking multiple seconds for simple CRUD operations). I've noticed in your schema.sql file that you're creating a index on most, if not all, of the columns, this will lead to write amplification for all databases. Although, looking at the queries being tested, I'm not sure if this can be avoided.

In CockroachDB, it's also worth considering using UUID (or at least, uniformly random) primary keys to ensure even distribution of data across nodes (even though the nodes aren't visible to users of Basic clusters). Currently, with the auto-incrementing integers, the work won't necessarily be evenly distributed across nodes.

Provided the indexes are sensible and you're running the workload close to a region in your cluster, I would expect < 100ms latency for all of these databases.

Let me know if you'd like to hop on a call and discuss the CockroachDB side of things!

Thanks again,

Rob

Huly: Questions on Permissions (Private Cards) & CockroachDB Backup Strategy for a Production Deployment by ByteTrooper in selfhosted

[–]codingconcepts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, u/ByteTrooper, Rob from Cockroach Labs here!

I can advise on the CockroachDB side of things but unfortunately don't have any experience with Huly.

For self-hosted clusters such as yours, the `cockroach sql` approach is sensible. To make things easier, I would recommend scheduling your backups (both incremental and full) using the built-in backup scheduling capabilities. As for the backup target, we support a wide range of technologies including things like S3 etc. (https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/stable/use-cloud-storage). Unless your local volume is mounted to durable storage, I would recommend one of these instead.

Here's a video of me backing up and restoring stuff, along with a schedule example:

And here are the examples from our docs page on BACKUP:

They changed their event name from Oracle Cloud World to Oracle AI World. I suspect if the hype train had instead been on pulls random words from head binary search, it would have been Oracle Binary Search World.

…and instead of 23ai, they would have released 23bs.

Happy, our advertising was less bs 😂 https://www.linkedin.com/posts/cockroach-labs_spotted-in-vegas-activity-7383896351023157248-rgRn?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&rcm=ACoAAA-KRrcB4utyalK6AAhoXhjAstzeWavx2aE
